Tapering and lifting?

If anyone has been in a sport im pretty sure you know what tapering is? Well for swiming we have to taper for championship meets if you guys know what this means, would it be ok to lift and taper? I say no but my brother wants to lift more..comments, opinions?
 
By tapering you mean lowering the amount you lift? If so you definatly should taper, in off season is when you should hit the weights hard, preseason is when you should hit the weights/practice the skill aspect 50/50, and during season it should be like 20/80
 
I dont know about lower the lift but my swim team coach was like this, take 2 weeks off of everything and gently lower your swimming yards ( so pretty much lower the weight) and then ur body is used to just putting down a certain amount of energy. By not using this energy ur body is spost to build that up until u do use it? I think tapering is more of a mental thing than physical.
