Taking measurements...

Different measurements methods

I heard that regular machines that only weigh your mass is inaccurate. One can increase their weight through excercise by making muscle, but that doesnt exactly mean one is getting fatter. But on the other hand, I tried the Body Fat Analyzer machine in my gym, and then someone told me that even that was inaccurate. They suggested a lab-sized body in water immersion to measure fat amount. Then what is the most practical way to measure oneself to see how your progress goes in this weightloss agenda?

Simple measuring tape. Those machines are highly known for their inaccuracy. I doubt that at your weight you are 40lb fat!! Even the body mass index calculations are shunned by doctors because they don't take into account sex and ethnicity.
For example, if an Asian person had a BMI of 26 they'd probably be quite large, but that would be quite normal for a european. Asian women would be quite slim but not too skinny at 10BMI but a Polynesian woman would be normal at 32, If she was 10 she'd be unhealthily small.

... and the mirror. May not be accurate, but after 3 weeks, you can usually see more definition in certain areas. It's the only measurement that I use.

start taking pictures of your self every month to measure your progress. That shows you were you are making progress and it you need to work on certian areas

Taking Pictures...what a great Idea! I wish I had done that. Over the last 18 months I've lost about 50 pounds....I see myself everyday...I know I've lost the weight...I just can't SEE it. Taking pictures would have helped!!! I'll start that today...as want to loose another 20 or 30 pounds...

Measurements

Everything has some sort of measurement, whether is ounces or grams, etc. I was wondering how determine how much food you are having. I have no idea how much food is, lets say 85g, or like 2.4 ounces. Is there any simple way to measure grams and ounces and servings?

usually you can decipher how much is in a serving by reading the side of the box. They will say something like "it makes 4 servings (180g)" ... you may have to do some math sometimes, but you can usually determine how much you are having.

meat doesnt tell calories, but supposedly your not supposed to eat a piece bigger than a deck of cards.

Ok, although no one has responded to my last question, I'm going to try again with something else...

When you take measurements, do you suck in your stomach? Just wondering. Because when I don't, my stomach is about 40 inches, but I wear 36 inch jeans. So which measurement should I write down?

I believe that when you take measurements for clothing you're not supposed to suck in. (I usually did anyways. Man I hate bridesmaid dresses. Could they possibly make you feel any fatter? Sorry, off topic.) However, the reason you measure yourself during weight loss is for comparison only, so I don't think it really matters which way you do it as long as you always do it the same. Might actually be handy to do it both ways. I usually don't suck in when I measure for my own info. I want to know how bad it really is. *laugh*

blackwdw,
i just read your signature all the way through..whoo hoooo party in august, eh?!? right on!

anyway -yeah - i agree that as long as you're consistent in how you measure it doesn't matter which way you do it for tracking purposes. however, i think i normally take my standing up very straight, but i don't think i suck in..not sure. i'll think about that the next time i tape. hmm....good question.

I just did my measurements today, so it's fresh in my mind... when I do my waist, I stand up really tall & flex my tummy, but I dont suck it in. I agree with everyone else here... just make sure you're consistent.

If you're doing it for fitting clothes... then I'm dipped. No clue...lol.

:D
