Swimmer's V - abs

Im actually a swimmer but I've never been able to get abs quite like this. I'm not sure if you know what I'm talking about but its the "v" shaped outline in your lower abs as shown in this picture.

Apparently, it drives the ladies crazy.

Anyone know any exercises that will target this muscle group? I've tried some of exercises that are labelled as "oblique" exercises but they dont work for the "v" outline.

The V is a product of very low body fat.

I'm assuming you're talking about the "V" that occurs starting below the external obliques (just above the iliac crest) and continuing across the lower abdoment in a chevron to the other side -- not the "V" shape that most men have from their shoulders to their waist.

You say you are a swimmer, therefore, I'm sure you look absolutely awesome just the way you are!

I'm just wondering, though ... is the only reason you want a "V" to impress the chicks? Think about what you want to impress and attract here. Do you want Miss Superficiality or Miss Real?

FYI, the Canadian Swim Team trains here in Calgary, and their gym/pool workouts are brutal. My shoulders hurt just watching them train. That said, they have incredibly strong upper bodies (now that's a turn on!). Some of the swimmers are as cut as the guy in the picture you linked us to and some aren't. So they don't all have that "V" either.

Just cause you a swimmer doesn't mean you have a low BF and hard lean physique. I know plenty of swimmers who swim miles a day, and they still have that skinny-fat soft look. But they have amazing lungs and endurance.

I honestly don't know any swimmers who have that skinny-fat soft look. But then, the only swimmers I come into contact with are either on the swim team or triathletes. They supplement their training regimen with weights/machines and look fabulous.

Apparently, I live in a vacuum :)

Why thank you! haha and i guess i want it because it looks good, i like it, and it makes me feel good if i have it. i mean of course i dont want a superficial girl..but in all relationships theres gotta be some sort of physical attraction so im sure this would help.

and yes i know firsthand how ravaging those practices are. when i did club (this was only in the summer) we had 11 practices a week totalling around 30 hours a week (2 on weekdays, 1 saturday..i only went to like 9 of them a week). for the morning practices we ran 2.5 miles, did 30 more minutes of dryland such as pushups, abs, etc. and swam 5-6 miles. that took 3 hours. went home took a nap, and did it again and that was only 1 days worth of workouts! terrible!

It is benificial for endurance swimmers in open water to have high bodyfat percentages. You wont find many of them with an adonis belt.

well you wont find any super ripped/muscular guys who swim unless they're sprinters since as we all know, muscles heavier than fat. but yeah from my experience, swimmers eat a ton. and i mean a ton of food to fuel our bodies. yeah there are exceptional swimmers have a little more meat than others but they also have very long muscles that dont fatigue as easily compared to sprinters and normal people. they also have a heart that is much more efficient. for me it doesnt seem that body fat correlates to how good of an endurance swimmer you are. no matter how fat or thin endurance swimmers (500y free, 1000, mile) need very good technique in the water. you can have the perfect swimmers body but if you cant rotate your body and keep a high elbow in the water, your still going to sink. and actually from my experience, most endurance swimmers tend to have muscle (but arent bulky) but are mostly low in body fat since they train much harder and churn out around 7-9 miles per day and thats not including dryland workouts.

Tarheel, you should work your entire core. This includes the low back. If your entire core is developed, you will be able to highlight all parts if your bf% is low. A lot of swimmers I know (I know a lot) are not well developed because they don't lift with the proper methods and don't eat enough to build muscle if they did. Sure, they eat a lot. But if someone already eats a lot and is still very skinny without much muscle, then they need to lift and eat MORE.

Buoyancy does come into it but fuel stores are the main reason. Very efficient fat oxidiation and also it insulates in cold water.

Yep. Most people don't have a clue what athletes do on a daily basis. It's tough work. Your entire life is consumed with training, especially before comps. And relationships are hard, too. What guy (or girl) wants to hang out with a girl (or guy) who doesn't party, doesn't drink, doesn't eat crap food, is always travelling, has to get their sleep, and has to get up early every day? Only another athlete or somebody really understanding :)

You're right, there has to be that "chemistry" going on, for sure, and a really nice physique is a huge drawing card! I can't speak for every girl, but I usually don't see a guy half naked before I agree to go out with him, if you know what I mean. The things that are more important to me are what is inside. A guy can always improve on his physique. But he can't always get a better heart or a better brain. And ***** happens. You can lose a leg or an arm and inside you're the same person, but outside you're not. I've had a major crush on one of our parathletes (rowing) here (he lost part of his leg), and what this guy has accomplished is beyond words. I have so much respect for him. He's just so amazing. I'd date him in a second. I have no idea if he has the "V" or not! But he has everything else.

That's just how I think. I don't know how any other girls think.

of course, ilovemuscle, that goes without saying that whats inside is more important than whats on the outside. your certainly not going to look like your 20 years old forever. i try to focus on being a good guy and i definitely see the big picture of relationships. (i love how we've deviated from working out to dating and relationships haha)

That really depends on the current situation of your life, lol. ;)
