strength vs hypertrophy

i am currently doing the 5x5 routine and i keep seeing that the best reps for hypertrophy is 8-10. But what im confused about is how can you gain strength without gaining muscle? If you only strength train you whole life and eventually can do a 400lb squat, you arent going to have small legs! It makes sence to me that when you build strenght, muscle growth will follow. Can someone explain to me what is the dif. between strenght and muscle growth?

btw: i tried the search button and it didnt bring anything up

Strength=central nervous system
Hypertrophy=increase of the sarcoplasm

Here's some light, fun reading

Olympic lifters and powerlifters are prime examples of individuals who train for strength. However, they gain quite a bit of hypertrophy through training for strength.

Will you have twig legs if you squat 400? No.

In the end, growth is about caloric consumption.

Those two pics are of Pyrros Dimas. His main objective is to lift as much weight as he can while keeping in a weight class.
