Staying off the Scale

I got in trouble from my boss at the track (she works at Curves doing the winter) the other day for weighing myself pretty much all the time. I'm not an everyday person, but I do weigh myself on Mondays and Thursdays. I want to know what I am coming off the week and then going into the weekend. She told me that fine, but since I'm still new in my weightloss program, I shouldn't be weighing myself so much. I'm just getting a little annoyed because last week, I basically lost 6 pounds overnigth and then gained four back in three days. I'm thinking I need to stay off the scale for about a month or so. Has anyone else gone through this before and is it a good idea to say away from the scale?

i weigh myself everyday, but i also keep the numbers in perspective. there are ALOT of variables that affect your weight each day, so fluctuations are very common. Some of these variables can be kept to a minimum by being consistant (weighing yourself same time of each day, wearing same clothes, etc). But what really matters is the general average trend over a longer length of time. Hence why alot of people recommend just weighing yourself once every week or couple of weeks, or even month. personally, im a scientific person, so i like having more measurements to work with, so i weigh everyday and only really concern myself with weekly averages.

I weigh myself every morning when I get up (after using the bathroom). But I can accept my weight fluctuations as normal and try not to worry about them. At my size, they are usually less than a pound though. It makes it a little harder to tell when I am making progress, but I try to look at the overall direction instead of the day to day changes.

If weighing yourself all the time is causing you stress, then maybe it would be better to do it less often. The scale isn't the final word on your progress either... remember to take into account how you feel and how you look in the mirror. Muscle can throw off the numbers.

i too can see a big drop in weight overnight, followed by a steady increase over the next few days.then it will drop again. i think its normal and after it started happening regularly i stopped panicking. i weigh myself most days, cos im addicted to the scale, but have an official weigh in day once a week. as long as there is a general weight loss pattern i would try and not worry. slim

Slim, I have noticed the same thing (a drop followed by a stready increase over a few days, then a drop again). I thought it was strange, but maybe this is normal. Over time my weight is going down, so I'm not worried. :)

I weigh myself once a week. I'm trying to replace my need to see a smaller number with a need to see a larger number on my calories burned during my cardio session each day. Which will help ensure that I see a smaller number when I do weigh myself. I am actually thinking about weighing myself only 2 times a month. I'd get way too discouraged if I had to deal with all that fluctuation.

It's been hard to try to stay off the scale. I didn't weigh myself this morning. About a week ago, I took a before picture of myself. I also weighed my self then. I'm thinking in about a month from that day, take another picture and weigh myself then. That way, I can keep try of how I'm doing and how I'm looking.

i had to force myself to stop weighing myself everyday, it just drove me crazy sometimes weighing myself after feeling like i've been doing good work and too see that i've lost no weight just really killed my morale.

Nomi, I agree. Some days I do very well, then get on the scale the next morning and... ARG! It's a pound heavier or it's exactly the same again.

Royal, I'm down to twice a week, and it's better for me because then I know when I'm not doing well generally reflected by the scale. If I'm up a few in a couple days, I can check what I was doing and see if I was cheating too much. By weighing less often than that, I don't think I could accurately judge how well I was doing and think I would cheat more often. I also measure waist, hip, and thigh on the two days I measure. So far, even when the scale doesnt go down, the measurements have. Especially at my hips!

OMG me too! But in the last 10 weeks I changed up my workout and have really only fluctuated (I admit some eating was off sometimes) BUT I did drop a pant size and I look slimmer so I know I'm still doing what I need to be doing. I was weighing daily and making myself nuts, so now I just stick to Friday. Sometimes I'll step on on Monday to see if my weekend eating made me gain, even though my "official" number is not till friday. If I'm up on Monday it does motivate me to work even harder the rest of the week though!
