Starting Out

Well, over the past year I was really poor. Not that I haven't been poor before. But this time I was poor and worked at a restaurant. So I ate lots of fattening free food to save money on groceries. Well, I saved money, but gained 100 lbs over the past year. So now that I'm not as tight on money as I was before, I just started a new diet. This diet consists of vegetables, fresh or frozen only, boneless skinless chicken, steak, and soups. Also, my biggest problem is I love beer, so I'm not cutting that out of the diet. I've switched from a 150 calorie beer to a 110 calorie beer that I still like. This is my sole intake of empty calories. Vegetables, like asparagus, fresh green beans, grilled on george foreman grill in some garlic herb marinade are great and flavorful. Those little green giant packages of frozen vegetables, broccoli with low fat cheese sauce, creamed spinach, and the brussel sprouts in butter sauce (fake) are excellent. Soups, any that are low fat low cal. Grilled chicken. Steaks, as my only real fat intake, are still low in overall calories, and are EXTREMELY filling and satisfying as far as hunger goes and packed with protein. At peak I weighed 270+. After about a week I'm down to 260. So its working. How does my diet sound, nutritionally speaking? I must say it does feels really good so far.

Wow, well it looks good to me!

I don't see any fruits in there though?

Congrat's on your weight loss!

I don't like things that taste sweet as far as food is concerned. I can drink sweet beverages, but not sweet food. So I may slip in some fruit juices here and there, but probably will never be a fruit eater. Love the veggies though.

Sounds good to me, but I agree you need a few fruits too, if possible. I like the high protein diets simply because they are relatively easy, and very tasty. I eat a lot of chicken, tuna, and beef, some cheese, and whey protein in milk or water most every morning. I eat eggs occasionally. (they give me a tummy ache since my crash dieting days) I also eat veggies, fruits, and i even "cheat" occasionally. I DO take one day each week as a "free" day. I have found this helps me to stay motivated throughout the rest of the week, as well as "shock" the body into losing at a steadier pace. Favorite exercises are swimming and weight lifting. WOuld love to have some buddies here.....we could motivate one another! I joined a support forum to stop smoking, and have made it one month today without a cigarette. The weight loss is the next project. If anyone wants to be a motivational buddy....just lemme know!!!

not all fruit is sweet. how about grapefruit? seems pretty tart to me.

I dont know if this helps...but since you dont like fruit, my doctor reccomended any time you start a diet that you should take a multivitamin. At least since you arent eating a lot of fruit you can still get in some vitamin C,A...etc...just thougth I would suggest that to you.

I read some interesting stuff about fruit lately. I hear it is making people fat! Check this article out.

Its true. I remember years ago before I was fat, my coworkers girlfriend was fat and she went on this all fruit diet. Because of all the sugars in fruit, she ended up losing no weight at all.

Carrots are higher in A than any fruit, and broccoli and brussell sprouts have more C than both strawberries and oranges. But I understand your point. However I have had problems with vitamins. I've swallowed a multi vitamin before and thrown up, and I normally have a rock solid stomach. I also get flushed, my skin turns red, itchy, and hot. Vitamins are even less for me than fruit is. But I will still drink the occasional orange juice, grapefruit juice. Also developed acid reflux while being overweight, and that really flares up when I have something acidic like tomatoes or anything citrus.

Hi, I don't like fruit either. Our bodies are fairly adjustable, and as long as you're getting vitamins and nutrients from other sources, you're fine. I think you have a good plan. I don't eat fruit, except for occasional bowl of strawberries with a bit of sugar/whipped cream as a dessert. I think you need to eat foods that do not upset your stomack, that satisfy your stomack and taste buds, while allowing to consume less calories overall. All the best!

My doctor recommended these vitamins called Viactive. They are a chewable piece (not really a pill). They taste like chocolate and are very high in vitamins. they have about 20 cal in each piece but the vitamin intake is worth it. I got them at Sam's club. but i know they have them at target and im sure if sams has them then wal mart does as well. I dont know if they will help you or not. I have the same problem with swallowing those awful big pills. Just thought I would add a little hint that i do. :)

Interesting. I've lost weight eating all fruit before. The only thing was, is that my appetite went through the roof because of all the fruit sugars and I was miserable.

Just a sidenote: I didn't mean to upset any of the fruit lovers out there. Apparently by posting a link to this article, it was upsetting to some. I was just passing along some info that I thought was interesting. I'm not advocating for people to stop eating fruit by any means! lol

Anyhow, that's too bad about your coworkers girlfriend. I'm sure she was frustrated!
