Squats

ok I'm sarting OH squats tonight. Question I know that front squats are hader than back squats, but what about OH squats??? Any tips for doing them????

Yes I am talking overhead squats. ahh my goal is max strength- 350lbs patient with ease, rock hard by cuba trip(august) and 15"pipes.... I am going to rotate Oh, front and back squats each lower bod workout.. I just want some tips on them if you got any :) i just did one light set and I think they are going to take some getting used to after doing the front squats for a bit...

Can you tell me what your "version" of a overhead squat is? My idea is holding an Olympic Bar overhead and squatting down (below parallel) without letting the elbows bend.

They are no more better than front or back squats. They aid more in core and shoulder strength.

ok we are on the same page. so i guess i just need to get used to the form and stbility with them. i don't think i'll be squatting 100lbs on those any time soon like the front squats :( oh well baby steps...

You're right. They just take time. I found them to be extremely awkward like the first time you do front squats. At least they were for me anyway.

Good luck

I can't even do one due to lack of shoulder flexibility. Use a "snatch grip" when you do them (as wide as you can go). If you cannot maintain perpendicular with your arms throughout the movement then you need to do some preliminary work. Same with back position, heel lifting or pronation, lack of balance. It is actually a pretty advanced move, and jumping right in without having someone watch you form to see if you need a "corrective phase" may be an invitation to hurting your shoulders. I think that is what Standapart was getting at.

You'll find a striking discrepency between the OH squat and back squat. I back squat in the 3-400s and I can work up to 180 on the over head squat. Remember to drop down smoothly and no bending or wavering on your way up. The OH squat is great at finding structural weaknesses.

Is there any picture on how is it done? i have never seen an OH squat before.

also, when i do narrow or wide squats, i always get cracking sound on my kneecaps. anyone gets that too?

Thanks evo , jp and stand apart, I did okay. they felt a bit awkward and i can't go as low just yet but i'll get it quickly i think. we'll see how i progress, next workout will be the old back squat, then the front before i hit back around to the OH again..will try to get a spotter for it. to help keep me in check..Thanks guys :)
