Squats - what is an alternative

Here I am again. Sorry about the no posts for months then 2 within an hour... I've been meaning to ask these but just haven't gotten around to it.

Anyway...

I'm after an alternative to doing squats, I love squats because I can feel so many muscles working at the same. The problem is my lower back, while doing squats it feels weak and gets sore which prevents me from progressing in stacking on the weights.

What is an alternative exercise to the squat that would work as many muscle groups? Anything else besides lunges?

Start Deadlifting to work the lowerback. Also make sure you take a deep breath before every rep because this will fill your abdominals with air which in turn will stabilize your lowerback; keeping that safe arch. Also keep your chest out.

Nothing replaces squats.

Have you ever done a deadlift before? I think you should be able to deadlift more weight than you can squat. Deadlift works the lower back and the glutes.

Have you tried different squat variations?
No, will have to look into this... what are your suggestions?
Have you tried strengthening your lower back?
I workout for roughly an hour each time - 50% of that is focused on my core and lower back. I am very focussed at the moment at building a stronger back, it's been an issue for such a long time!

I use quite a few of the exercises from this youtube clip, this trainer has some pretty good lower back correction exercises.

Oh well, maybe I'll just have to keep plugging away at lighter weights when i do squats.

The only problem with deadlifts is that they themselves can take a hefty amount of back strength to perform, and could make things worse. You need to continue with your core routine, and move to lunges (or deadlifts). You also need to reduce the weight, and give your core a little time to catch up.
