So hi this is my diary. This is day 1 of my weight loss. I am 24 years old, I am 5'1" and weigh 228lbs, yes you heard me right! Im tired of being the fattest one in the swimming pool ! So heres the thing I have tried tons of diets and asolutely nothing works. If I remeber correctly my last diet helped me gain 15lbs!! For some reason when i diet I will loose a few pounds then the weight will stop comming off and then I end up gaining more then when I started and I am sooo frustrated. So I have decided to change my eating habits, Im going to start eating healthier and not run to the fridge everytime im bored or stressed out. I have also started exercising at least 15 minutes to a half hour everyday (not much but its a start). I know that weight loss is not an overnight thing its a lifestyle. I am hoping in 1 year to loose atleast 60lbs, I think that is a reasonable goal. So I will continue on with this diary and hopefully i will reach my goal ;)

Hey again, welcome to your very own diary!

Like you said, diets didn't work. Diets never worked for me either. What finally did work was a lifestyle change which included eating healthy things, eating proper portions, not skipping meals (and having healthy snacks in between), and exercise. It is a big change, but you can do it. It's good that you're doing 15-30 min of exercise a day. I've heard at least 30 min is about the minimum to do, so if 30 mins straight is hard right now, then do 15 mins here... and then later on at some point another 15 mins. That way you get your 30 mins :D

I would write more but I have to get to work soon, so good luck with everything, I know you can do it! Oh, and don't forget about shopping with me, we'll get you the healthy foods you need to get a good start!

So yay i lost some weight woohoo!! I hope i can keep it up. I sure am having a hard time sticking to healthier food, but it seems my worst enemy seems to be alcohol. So my goal is to really start watching what i am eating and stop drinking alcohol and if i do only have one drink. I never realized how many calories im pumping into my body when i drink.

lots of times we don't realize just how many calories we are putting into our bodies! i finally had to start a food journal (you should consider it!) to keep myself accountable for what i was eating.

4 pounds down is a great start! good luck on your weight loss journey!

you can do it!!! :D

Hi Christina,
Welcome to the WLF and to your diary!

Risty really did hit the nail on the head. Diets don't work. Without changing your lifestyle, you will invariably gain back what was lost and then some. That's why Yo Yo dieting is so pervasive.

As much as I did NOT want to count calories, I have found that it truly is the best way to learn how to incorporate the food I love into my life. Learning what a proper proportion was crucial!

If you haven't already done so, you might check out or they are both sites for tracking calories, nutrition and fitness.

Best of luck and I'm glad you're here! Remember, you CAN do this - it's just one day at a time!

HEY!

Congrats on the 4 pounds! Although I've already said that in person, hehe. I know it's really hard to change lifetime habits but anything is possible if you put your mind to it.

So another week has gone by but this week i never lost any weight, i never gained any either so that is good. it is probably because im not focused enough on changing my eating habbits i eat way to much at meals. i need to learn to not eat junk food and to stop eating before im over full. so this week my goal is to really focus on my portions and making sure i dont go for that burger again that i ate when i was with my dad and brother today. damn those fast food places (so quick to grab when u are hungry) so awefully tempting. i love how i feel ill after i eat there but yet i still go back, shame on me :(

This website answered a few questions for me about how this calories/metabolism all work.
look at the related links located at the bottom left of the page.

Also, if you have a very hard time losing weight, and you are actually committing yourself to the change then maybe you should see a doctor and rule out thyroid problems.

Otherwise this diary will probably help out a lot!

Just keep track of everything you eat and review it!
Best of luck!

Thyroids isn't the problem. Eating properly is 80% of the battle. If you don't eat healthy and in proper portions you won't lose weight. You may lose a little at first, but it won't be kept off. Trust me, I've gone through it and I know ya know it! The biggest challenge for me was to change my eating because I'm a foodaholic, I just love the taste of food. One day, I finally realized that if I really wanted this, I really had to change my life and eating was the biggest problem. I can't stress enough how important eating right is to weight loss.

Exercise can only help you so far. For example, if you're eating 3000 cals a day, and only burning 300 in exercise, that won't do much good. I used to just exercise but not change my eating, and all that did was maintain my weight and at 216 pounds, maintaining my weight was not what I wanted. Changing my eating was what was needed along with the exercise.

So if I could encourage you in any way it would be to change your eating. I know you can do it, because if a foodaholic like me can do it, anyone can. It's hard but it gets easier over time, and still you have the odd bad food days but that's normal and it's ok as long as most of the time you do well :) You know I'll help you in any way with the whole food thing, and whenever you're ready, we'll go grocery shopping and I can show you the kinds of things to buy that will really get your weight loss going!

Im going to have to take you up on that offer, heh last time i went shopping (johnny was there) i left the grocery store (after an hour of shopping) only with stuff for lasagne "one of the most fattening foods out there" and nothing else haha. I walked around that grocery store and could not think of anything good to buy  it was aweful and frustrating. I think i am going to have to come up with a list of meal plans and shop from there, im sure u can help me with that as well.

I was also wondering if taking vitamins can assist in boosting your metaolism. Im not talking about weight-loss pills im wondering about real "good for you" vitamins. I just bought these weight loss multi vitamins from costco they are called Weight Smart One A Day they are suposed to assist is weight loss, i am sceptical but i geuss there is no harm in trying. Who knows maby with more vitamins in my body I wont feel so hungry all the time. Wouldnt that be great :p

Oh ya and to Ashy about the thyroid thing. That is what my doctor thought was wrong when i started gaining weight so fast. I did get tested and my thyroid seems to be in perfect working order *yay* , but you are right some people do have thyroid problems that do make them gain weight, and i think if anyone does gain weight in a very quick and unusual amount of time they should definately be tested for it. :)

Hello,
I am a "good for you food freak"! I was before I changed my lifestyle ( a full 5 days ago), only that I ate a lot of crap between my oh so healthy meals and drank a lot of juice and icetea (I miss my ice tea though!!).
To eat healthy, or to know what to shop obviously you have to respect your taste, I love every kind of food (except for red meat when I am in England), but I really like fish and chicken. And I love vegetables.
So for example twice a week generally we (that is me and my pseudohusband of a boyfriend) eat fish, I love cooking it, I make it generally in foil-pockets with a bit of olive oil, salt pepper and then vegetables of your choice. I find it the nicest with tomatoes, leek, onions and peppers.
You just put it into the oven and after about 20 minutes it is ready! It is very healthy, very light and very yummy!!!!

Another easy and light dish is a nice fresh stir fry of vegetables (you can put som meat, chicken, fish or prawns in there). Just cut all your favourite veggies and stir fry them (if you put the garlic first in the olive oil and leave it cooking for a few minutes, the whole thing tastes better). Instead of using a sauce because they are often very full of crap, just put tomatoes in it (not your typical stor fry veggie), they lose their juice and make an awesome sauce!!
Or my third fav (and tonights menu at my place) grilled veggies! I grill aubergine, courgettes, tomatoes, champignons and asparagus (sprinkled in sea salt). They are very light, and sooo tasty!!

I have learned to love to cook and now just the anticipation of the food is amazing. I love the smells and the textures and that I am able to create it!

Well as you see, I can get very excited about good yummy food... so if you ever need some more help, just tell me! I never run out of veggie-based ideas!
Hope you find nice yummy food for yourself soon, xxMilaxx

Yeah I can totally help you find things to buy. It's a really good idea to plan out what meals you're going to eat for the week so you can buy the appropriate groceries.

About the vitamins thing, I mean having a normal mutli vitamin I think is a good idea just to make sure you're getting your vitamins, cause sometimes we don't eat the proper things and don't get the proper nutrition. About taking weight loss pills and all that, I personally don't want to take them. It's not that I think they're THAT bad, but it's because I want to know that I did it all myself and it wasn't due to the aid of some pill. Plus there's natural things that can boost your metabolism. Never skipping meals (especially breakfast) will help boost your metabolism and so will eating every 2-3 hours because then the body learns and knows that yes it is getting food and it's getting it often. Eating healthy in itself will help, make sure you're getting enough protein (egg whites, lean meats like chicken and fish, etc), good fats (from avocados, nuts, etc), whole grains, fruits and veggies. Another thing that will help is exercise and building muscle. Muscles will burn more calories that having fat, so it's a good thing for that as well.

So another week has passed and i have not lost anymore weight.:( I am finding it extremely hard to eat right because i start work at 5am and usuallly dont eat until i get off work, if im lucky i grab a bagel at the coffee shop, i know it isnt healthy but it is the only thing available. Im starting to wonder if i should be taking a meal replacement with me to work for breakfast and lunch. With my job i usually dont get a long enough break to eat a meal that i bring with me. I know taking meal replacements arent so healthy but im wondering if it would be the best thing to eat to make sure that my body doesnt think that i am starving it and store all of my dinner caloreies up. So if i take a meal replacement in the morning and one at lunch and then eat dinner is that going to be healthy enough?

I'd really look at ways that you can add real food into your daily routine.

You have no lunch time or breaks during the day?

I have a great idea! I know it's hard to eat at 5am, so why not a protein shake? You can get protein that's part protein and part carb and that would be a great way to start the day. I've been told that at Costco they have the huge buckets for cheap like $30 someting or around there... and for a huge bucket that's awesome! That way, you get some protein and carbs into you without actually eating and you're not skipping a meal then you can have an actual breakfast once done your work when you get home.

That would be a good idea. I will look into that.
-M2M I start at 5am and i work for my parents business doing cleaning and landcaping. My mother doesnt take a lunch break usually just a 20minute cofee break and then we work a few hours. Sometimes im home by 11-12 but in the summer expecially not until like 2pm and by that time i am so hungry. U see my mom is a go-go-go person no time for breaks she just wants to get the work done. Even if i bring something it has to be something that wont spoil in the heat. I have asked for an actual break and she says "fine just go home then" then she is mad etc. Sometimes i do get like a half hour -45 min break at her house but there is no way to predict that. Im sure risty has heard all about this from my brother. So what I am saying is it is almost impossible to get the proper breaks to eat a proper meal and i get an upset stomache eating before work. Its kind of a screwed up situation
I will see about the shake thing. Maby i can work on my mom again about breaks. hahaha as if!!! Im not brave enough to poke the bear hehe :D

Yeah I remember hearing it from your bro too, lol. I really think that a lil protein shake wouldn't upset the stomach being liquid and easy to digest. So at least that would be a start, then if you can get a break we'd be able to figure out what types of foods to bring from there. But, at least for now, stop in at Costco and take a look at the prices. You get a lot of shakes out of a huge bucket so it would last a good while too.
