shrugs

when you guys do shrugs with dumbbells do you rotate your shoulders around like in a circle motion or do u just bring your shoulders up then back down?

only up and down.
Dont remember where, but I read something (not sure if it was a study) that talked about the stress put in the shoulder joint when rolling the shoulders.
I am sorry to say that I dont remember why though.

My thought is that, because the trapezius is such a strong muscle, you need to lift a heavy amount of weight in order to overload it.
When you start to roll the shoulders and add a small external rotation component, you are putting the some of the rotator cuff muscles under a significant amount of tension.

funny because i have done the rotating thing and the next day i can barely move my neck and i have pinpoint pain on my head, like a terrible migraine. my roomate told me about those and his traps are huge.

i do kno that you are supposed to pull back a bit when you shrug, that is why shrugs in a smith rack just dont work, you need to pull your shoulders back at the top of the shrug, but pretty up and down

EMG studies have shown that behind the back shrugs (bar behind back) to be most effective.

I'll take pretty big traps over huge traps and save myself the pinpoint pain in the head!
:)

Toss the shrugs, heavy deadlifts and powercleans will get you some traps. Worry about shrugs when you have progressed.

What will it be then up and down or circles?
I have to do shrugs because my deadlift right now is at nothing and i don't do powercleans.
