Should I hire a personal trainer????

Hello,

After posting about my weightloss goals in the WL section of this forum a couple of days ago (see: http://training.fitness.com/weight-loss/help-i-need-advice-24973.html ) I have been considering if a personal trainer would be a good idea?
I am a member of the David Lloyd gym in the UK and they offer PT at £216 for eight sessions and £408 for 16.
I am currently 187lbs and want to get down to 140 at least before october this year.
I can afford some personal training but not enough to see me through the next four months. Please could you advise if it is perhaps better to start off with a block of personal training for the 1st month or so of my program or is it better to try and start on my own and use the PT to help me shape my body once I have lost wieght?
The other option is to book 8 sessions now and then go it alone for a while and then book another 8 sessions near the end?
Also should I try to space the sessions out over a full 8 weeks or is it better to see the PT twice a week over 4 weeks?

Thanks to everyone for reading this any advice you have will be very happily recieved!

Well Betty,

Some people think PTs are great, others think they're a waste of money. And it really depends on the PT, of course. (It's a bit like a guitar instructor, of which I've had 3. Some are useless, they just sit there and watch you struggle, others are way too imposing, and others are just great!!!)

Your weight loss goal is pretty ambitious, 47 pounds in 4 months. I think the best way to drop weight is 1 pound a week, but that would only get you down 16 pounds by Oct.

If I were you, and this is just me talking, search these forums pretty thoroughly. Start in on a decent full body workout with 2 or 3 days of cardio each week as well. Track your diet religiously, everything that goes into your stomach gets written down (fitday.com is pretty good for that). Cut out soda and junk/fast food completely.

If you find you don't have the motivation/dedication to do it on your own, then a PT might be just what you need.

Good luck on your goals!

It wasnt a self promotion. There are many out there. Oh you're referring to my title, haha Ive been meaning to change that.

I would start out with a trainer. If a trainer can help you get better results, why not start now instead of waiting to see how you do on your own?

Do the first 8. That will be a month. Then do a month on your own. Then do another month of training. (you may find that after working with a trainer you will want to keep training more)

Also should I try to space the sessions out over a full 8 weeks or is it better to see the PT twice a week over 4 weeks?

Definitely do it in blocks. 2X per week for a month. Then do the rest after a month off from training. You will be better off having personal attention in the beginning, and after a month off there will be a lot of things that need to be adjusted.

You could hire an online trainer, probably much cheaper.

An online trainer is a double edged sword. You can probably get quality programming and nutrition advice. There will be a big drawback. An online trainer will not be able to make sure that your exercise technique is good. That is a BIG drawback.

I would advise a live trainer unless you have extensive experience exercising and really know proper form.
