SHould I give weight watcher's a try?

I know a few people that use and have used weight watchers (including my mama ) only reason I've never been inclined to join is it seems people only seem to lose weight while they're on it and it doesn't seem to stick after you stop going , I needed something that would work forever not just while I attend meetings.

I've never done WW, but I know a few people who have done it and liked it quite a lot. It's really just a structured way of making sure you eat , so if you're really concerned about points, making an effort to learn some basic nutrition and plan your own meals could take you just as far. You just don't get the backup and support.

One complaint I've heard about it is the weigh-ins. Lots of people are self-conscious about that.

I can imagine it would probably be less stressful/more fun if there are a bunch of your friends doing it together. That way you can motivate each other.

Why not, weight watcher is good, but it will take a little willingness and patience.

I did the program for a few months. The meetings didn't do much for me, but I was also the youngest one there. The plan isn't that hard; you eventually remember the Points values you use the most. I have the books and I'm thinking about joining online again or just doing it myself.

Well I decided not to join the weight watchers group. I got lots of information about this kind of diet during the last weeks and for me personally the negative side predominated. It might be a great possibility for some people to lose weight, but I guess it won't be for me.

My mother has been a Weight Watchers member for just over 3 months and has lost 33lbs. So I thought I'd give it a shot, and I do the point plan. I've been on it 3 weeks and have lost 11.2lbs. The weigh-ins are done privately. At first I didn't really care for the meetings, but I kept going and gave it a shot. Eventually I liked them. Of course, that's really my only adult time so I may over-estimate it. heh. I'd definitely recommend it, it's so much easier than calorie counting. And if you work out, you get activity points and can turn them into food points so you can eat more- if you're hungry, that is.

Quite a lot people in my circle of friends are joining the weight watcher's program. I have never tried the program before as I think it is very stressful to count points all day. What do you think about the program? And have you been successful doing weight watcher's? Would you suggest me to give it a try?

I am using it, and when I lost 92 pounds five years ago I lost 30 pounds in the first 3 months before I had even paid for it!! I don't use the meetings or the message board (anymore, they are very catty and ran me out because i like Adam Ant!) anyway.. .. The at home program is good, you get a points/activity calculator, food point books, journals. Everything you need

It's fun to count points and it really gives you a HUGE perspective on what you have been eating and what you can eat. It's a different way of counting calories. Soon you will be points this and points that, but it is very helpful I LOVE it.

This is a great site to find the points for most every restaurant too...

I was shocked when I found out my favorite Jack in the Box meal (spicy chic sandwich and curly fries) was 32 points- at the time my WHOLE daily total!!! I get 24 points now, so when I exercise I could eat 4 extra points ( I actually earn more but it's recommended you eat just 4), I prefer not to use them, but you can earn and eat a few points a day.

I have had major success, my friends will never try it, so I am alone in it, I would love to know people that use it! Try it... If you have any questions or need point recipe tips let me know!! :)

What kind of diet? It isn't really a diet, it's a structured way of keeping your calories down by watching portions. What were the negatives you heard about? I am curious.

As my previous post stated I love it, not everyone does, and that's ok! ;)

Well I think that the weight watchers program is quite time-consuming because of counting points all the time. And I really like to go out with a few friends and I think it would be kind of awkward to check the amount of points before ordering. Don't you think so? And moreover there is no weight watchers group in my town - it is about 50 miles away. Too far to go there once a week.

I find it utterly fascinating that you're concerned about the 'awkwardness' of ordering in a restaurant but willing to put a pill into your body - a pill that's not regulated by any agency whatsoever and you don't know what the long term effect it could have...

You have to be accountable for food consumption whenever you are watching what you eat. Counting points is what makes it fun, and it is way more fun than counting calories. If you are going out to eat with friends and are on a "diet" you will have to think about what you are ordering anyway. That is why I gave you that list of restaurant point values, just to see a little of how the program works. You would already know what to order before you go!

I can't force it down your throat, but like i said you don't need meetings, they have an at home program.

Anyway.. just my two cents.. Good luck!

To start out I think that weight watchers is one of the best programs out there. I recently looked into about 15 different diets and weight watchers was the best one out there. The reason being that their weight loss system is based on solid weight loss principles. They don't promote pills or special foods or drinks that make you lose weight, they actually teach you how to eat healthy and they do encourage exercise which in the end is what really will help you lose weight.

I have never said that that I was going to try this redusyn pill. I am just thinking about it. But maybe I will find a better option.
I didn't know that you don't have to go to the meetings. I thought this was obligatory. So how does this home program work?

No you don't have to go to meetings. That is just for people who need support, I don't have the time to go, so I don't.

You can get everything you need at home- . You can break up the payments in to 3, 44 dollar payments. And you get food guides, journals, a point calculator, cookbook.. and a few other materials to get you started. Both times I did the program (including now), I lost 30 pounds by the time I paid it off. I suggest you try it for 3 months, if you aren't happy, and didn't see the results you want, you could always sell the kit on Ebay and get some of your money back. I lost 92 pounds in 14 months, so I know it works, and it wasn't awkward, it was fun, and an eye opener!!.. If you ever need support , if you start, you already have one friend to help you with questions... me! lol... again good luck!!

Yes, It works!

From February, 2002 to January 2004, I lost 230 Lbs. on the WW Pts. program. And with the same program, I am keeping it off -- that and a lot of exercise! I was morbidly obese most of my life, and at 365 Lbs., I could hardly move. WW is not a quick fix OR magic bullet; it is a way of life and a way to live. True, there are times I get tired of it all, and just wish I could be one of those people that eat whatever they want and don't give it another thought, but that is not my lot in life. I have learned my lesson and WILL NEVER be obese again. Counting points? It took me just a little time to learn the pts. values for the foods I ate, and I mentally kept a running total each day, and I kept a food diary each day. Please don't let that deter you. I started out with 36 points a day --- not hard to keep track of. Now I have to just 22 to manage each day - no sweat! As you lose weight, they go down. Have a go at it -- and keep in mind that, honestly, there is no sure fire way to lose weight except to take in fewer calories than you expend. If there were an easy way, magic potent or fool-proof pill, we'd all be skinny-minnies!

Thanks for your posts and the link. I am going to have a look at it later. Maybe I should have a go at weight watchers!

My thoughts

Hi Jane. I joined WW online before and lost only a few lbs- but that was back when I was 140 and really didn't follow it that well.
I'm up to 175 these days and joined WW out of desperation to get control of my eating and do something!

I've been on it now for 2 months and had lost 6 lbs the first 3 weeks, but then gained it back when I was on my honeymoon. I still struggle with eating the 23 points a day I'm allowed, but I'm slowly getting the hang of incorporating 0 point foods, which when I do use them I really do see a drop in the scale when I weigh in!

I wanted to try the Core plan but the first day I was at a loss. I couldn't have bread and other things I'm used to, so went to the points for now. I've lessened my bread intake a lot and use WW bread (1 point for 2 slices) when I do have toast in the morning.

personally, I say give it a shot. If you want the social aspect and meetings are easy for you to get to, then try the meetings. Myself, I live ina small town and meetings exist but at hours that don't work for me, plus I don't really like the social aspect (though who knows, maybe I'll try joining the meetings if this doesn't work), so I'm doing it online.

Tracking food is not a nuisance at all. I simply take a few minutes at work to log breakfast and lunch, or else I wait til I'm home at lunchtime to log it. If I can't make it online during the day, I do it before or after dinner.

I prefer WW to calorie counting, as 23 points sounds like a lot, where 1200 calories sounds like so little. And 2 activities points like like more than 100 calories burned. Know what I mean? I get angry at myself if I go up to 28 points (like I did yesterday) even though that's almost about 1400 calories (give or take a but becacuse points takes fibre into account and there's also 0 point items that do have caloric value).

If you can afford it, try it. If not, try out SparkPeople.com - it's free and is similar to WW in terms of logging food. It does involve calorie counting, but I know that works for a lot of people.

Heres what I don't get about WW. they say its not a diet, right? well you get these points you have to keep track of...how is that any different then calorie counting??

it's not a diet in that foods are restricted or anything - you just have to work within a certain range... it is a lifestyle change and it's about educating yourself about how to stay within that range whether it's points or calories...

I was curious about this too. My mother and I had been looking into joining WW and finally decided calorie counting was very similar, and cheaper lol.
