ACate, 2014 is a long way way away! It's not a final decision, but it's under consideration! I ran one in Paris, France in 1999 when we lived there. So I thought it would be good to do one while we lived here in China... Then I would have run a marathon in Europe, one in Asia, that would leave me to run one in North America (like New York) some time in the future..sounds strange, but I like checking things off a list!
I did ok today eating wise...had more for dinner tonight than usual, and tomorrow, I've got a part in a Chinese wedding, and tomorrow night, I have another party's to go to...so Sunday is looking like a big exercise day!
Good choices to everyone!

Sarah

nice article scbibhouse i want to met you and me too a duffer from weghit and i hpe to reduce my weight step by step

contact me

I still think it's awesome that you are considering it!!! It wouldn't even enter my head! My big challenge is getting a golf handicap in the next 6 weeks & then trying for a club championship(C grade!) To me that's huge! :smilielol5:You won't stop me thinking that it is awesome Sarah! xoxo Cate

Thanks Cate! I will go for a run today in the park, preparing for my 1st 5k...after the 5k, I'll consider it further (or not!).

Yesterday I was in a Chinese wedding...yes, in it...a small part, but there! As the representative of the employer, I had to say a few words about one of my supervisors...so I practiced, and said a few words in Chinese...they must have understood it because they applauded when they were supposed to (and it wasn't the end!). Felt pretty happy about that. So, I wore a dress that I bought in the US (size 14) and felt pretty in it...Here's a picture of the wedding with me speaking. (The wedding and "reception" all happen in the same room...at a a hotel typically. Not a "preacher" officiating..but a type of MC microphone and music playing in the background etc...quite a show. On this same day there were 3 weddings taking place int he hotel...at the same time! All during the ceremony, people talking, smoking, drinking...not quite what I was used to in the US, but surely standard fare here in China.

And a one a little closer of me

Notice the pearls...I got these before I started on this journey...they used to hand alot closer to my neck!

After the ceremony was over, the food started coming out...lots of it.

Food at the chinese wedding...sorry if it makes you hungry, just focus on the cigarettes!

Notice the food is just piled on...and being only about 10:30 in the morning, no one is really hungry...so I'm guessing it will be thrown away (what a waste!) because everyone has to be gone by 12 noon (another custom thing), and notice the cigarettes on the table...it's customary that that when the bride and groom come to the table, you give them a red enveloppe with money, you are to smoke a cigarette with the groom and drink a toast of beer...we don't drink or smoke, so couldn't do it...and they understood that...we did of course give them the red enveloppe!

So, that was my day yesterday...after that in the morning and an evening out with friends in the evening...I knew I had to do some exercise so I did my 1 hour on the elliptical and I'll go to the park today. Can't do this every weekend!

Good choices to you all!

Sarah

Good day yesterday eating wise, but just not feeling alot of energy right now...maybe that time of the month, maybe overdid it exercise wise over the weekend, maybe just the dogdays of August..At any rate back at it again today! Good choices to all

Sarah

Caught up on your posts for the past few weeks, congrats on punching another great month and I feel your pain on the new scale. Had been weighing myself on vacation on a friendly scale that was 5 lbs lighter than my home scale, magically gaining weight doesn't feel fair.

I liked the fat2fit eating/exercise and motivation report you managed to sneak in a couple weeks back.

AHey Feeling gooder, glad to see you back!

Today, had a tough day at work, but at least it started well with exercise and a relatively good day eating wise. I will do my measurements this weekend, looking for some positive feedback from my body to get me over the new scales blues!!

Good choices to all... Trust me I'm needing all of you right now!!

Sarah

Just wasn't feeling it today and took a break! Last evening after getting back from the Dentist here in China, we went by the bicycle store and bought a bicycle! That means we have 2 now and we can ride together...in the park! We will have to cross some lanes of traffic to get to a wide sidewalk to finally ride, but I think it will be nice. They are simple bikes (our good bikes are in storage in the US!) and I hope to just ride along the river park and have a good relaxing exercise ride this weekend. Hope I'm not being too romantic about it!

Otherwise, not too bad on the eating..although I'm still worried I may be eating too few calories to make sure my body knows it's time to shed some pounds...feels like I've been ever so slowly going at this forever. It's a lifestyle change...I know that, but sometimes I just want instant gratification and see some weight loss! Not sure how I'm going to feel when I don't really have a goal weight hanging over me...hmm..cause for thought.

Good choices to ya!

Sarah

AGreetings one and all,
Well, got back on it today, and did the trifecta...walking up hill, running uphill on the treadmill and step climber...tough enough, but total time, about 55 minutes, so nothing to get too bored with.
Husband in a fowl mood today, so he didn't exercise, and turned his phone off, didn't want to be bothered...I have a theory about that..."when we don't feel good about ourselves, we see others faults very clearly"...needless to say, he was seeing all my faults and letting me know it. 99% of the time he is sweet and loving, but then that other 1%of the time, he's like a Jekyll of Jekyll and Hyde.. We've been married for 30 years, and the Jekyll doesn't come out very often, but when it does, it's hurtful. Couldn't really focus on work too much, and Thank God it was Friday! I will run again tomorrow, to try to relieve some stress.

On the weightloss front, tomorrow, I will take measurements, and do the old body fat scale to see the impact tomorrow. Not sure what to expect, seems like my weight has been all over the place lately (ever since I got this new scale, I weigh much more often...probably too often). I increased my calories a few days ago to be consistent with the moderately active lifestyle Limit...I hope it spurs along some weightloss. I know I am getting fitter, and the size 14's I bought a month ago fit great...but I would live to see it on the scale too! My motivation is good...have decided to do the great wall marathon here in China...now, the only question is when...2013 or 2014? Given that there is a 8 hour time limit, I'm thinking I could train up for it this year, doing a lot of the stepper in the fitness center during the winter and be ready by the weekends to do some long runs...still havn't layer out a training plan, but I did download the book"marathon" (which I have used before when I ran the Paris marathon way back in 1999, and found it to be very helpful)

Good choices to all,

Sarah

Well, today, I got up and exercised and forgot to take my measurements 1st...so, I'll do it tomorrow morning. I did 65 minutes on the elliptical (not too strenuous rate) and then did 15 minutes on the treadmill, running up hill for 10 minutes...hubby feeling some better today...still not his loving self, but at least livable/lovable! Hope to get him out to the park later today and get his bones moving...fresh air and exercise always good for the brain and mental state!

Scale had the almost exactly the same reading as last week, so I don't feel too bad about that. Since I've raised my calories a little, I feel good and have slept better, so that's a good place to start the day.

I actually filled in the registration for the Great Wall Marathon for 2013...but I didn't hit the send button! Still can't decide if I want to sign up for that level of committment or not. I'll have to inventory in writing and see what comes out...the Question is not "If"...the question is "when"!! That is such a huge change from this time 1 year ago when I struggled to climb even a small section of the wall with my sister!

Good choices to all,

Sarah

Hi Sarah,

- just wanted to tell you that I've read thru some of your diary & have found it most inspiring. It is so encouraging to see that significant weight-loss can be achieved by folks our age ( I am 51 ) - your success has given me hope & encouragement to work on my own much needed weight-loss- thankyou.

...- also , thankyou for mentioning the Fat2Fit Radio podcasts in your posts - I had listened to some of the Fat2Fit radio podcasts in the past, and have now returned to listening to Russ & Jeff - their approach of sustainable weight loss is so wise - it gives me hope that I can conquer my weight-issues for good.

- sorry to hear about your husband's grumpyness - ( mine is sometimes like that too - it is so hard when they do that - we need our "close" folks to support us...they are so major in our lives...)- :) and I agree with your insight that it is likely that he is upset with himself on something - and it is coming out with crankyness to you... good to hear you are not letting him get to you....just hang-in there until his "grumpy" passes - and your good-kind hubby is back.

- thankyou again for the inspiration,

-and wishes for much continued weight-loss/healthy success,

Maryann C.

I will try this again..wrote a big long post this morning...then lost it...hate it when that happens! I'll try again!

Hello MaryannC and thanks for stopping my my diary and saying such nice things! Looking at your note, it looks like we started our journey at about the same place weight-wise...I just started my journey at a different time...trust me..it's a journey, not a race...I've had to remind myself of that several times over the past 14+ months. You mentioned you were going to listen to fat2fitradio podcasts...they are really good for me. I started listening to them about 5 months ago and they have really helped me...I started at their 1st podcast and I'm up to episode 130 now..only 10 more to go unfortunately since one of them is sick, according to their website. I listen to them when I do my walking or elliptical workouts to give me good continued motivation. I didn't start out that way however...and looking back at it, it doesn't do any good to wish the contrary, but I will tell you how I started... I followed these 5 simple rules (simple, but not easy!)

1) No eating after 6:00pm (and yes, that meant that sometimes I didn't eat after my noon meal, or snack because I didn't get home from work)..In hindsight, this was probably not the best rule for my metabolism...probably too close to starvation for my own good, and I have since abandonned this one)...but my biggest meal of the day is breakfast (typically over 60 cal with some chinese veggies, a meat, 2 fried eggs and some fresh fruit like watermellon or pineapple, or whatever is in season here) Dinner is my smallest meal, typically around 300 cals and I drink alot of water and hot green tea (which I've aqcuired a taste for since living here in China)

2) No soft drinks (not diet, not regular) I still follow this one...I'm just convinced this stuff is bad for me!

3) Low carbs (not no carbs obviously with the fruits and veggies I eat), Still follow this one, with the exception that I 've added rice to my diet for lunch. I do tend to stay away from pasta, potatoes, breads and other really starchy foods..

4) No processed sugars or processed desserts. I still follow this one...even at the beginning, I still ate some fresh fruits.

5) Exercise every day for 45-60 minutes, no matter what. I still do this too. I started very slowly by walking on a flat treadmill at a slow pace, then worked my way up to increasing the incline, pace and then eventually moved to elliptical and stepper and now actually running...I'm convinced, my body adjusts to whatever I do for a routine, so I have to keep switching it up!

All during the 1st 9 months, I did not count calories and I didn't weigh but once a month. (I don't like bad news, so I made sure there was always progress by waiting a month!) Starting after about 4 months, I started doing body measurements and tracking progress that way. I just got a new % bodyfat scale and I weigh more often (once per week officially...but now that new scale just calls out to me when I pass the bathroom and sometimes I step on. I know there are daily fluctuations and I'm OK with that now, but at the beginning, I'm thinking I would have been demoralized to see it go up!

So, enough about my past...now onto today!

Started the day with my husband (who has gotten over his grumpyness...Thanks God!) and we went out to the park and did a 45 min brisk walk, followed by a 30 min run...nice run and felt good to breath some fresh air and move my bones! Then I came back and had a shower, BM and then I stepped on the scale...not an official weigh in because I jknow any weight lost during exercise is only water weight and will come back...but...it was nice to see 180.4...almost breaking through the 180 mark...again! Pretty happy with that even though I know the next time I weigh, it will likely go up...I take good news when I can get it!

I took measurements this morning before the run and, while they didn't move as much as I thought, they have moved some in the right direction...for some reason hips and waist stayed the same and I continue to lose it in my boobs (and if my rings are any indication, my fingers!)..

700

Speaking of measurements, I took some slacks down to the tailors last week and went down today and picked them up..they fit great! So even if none of my measurements were good, and the number on the scale isn't moving...the clothes are changing...and that is motivational for me!! I'll post a pic when I wear some of my redone duds to work this week.

So, I've written about all I know how...and going to post this before I lose it again!

Good choices to all!!

Sarah

Hi Sarah - many thanks for sharing your methods for your weight loss.

~ I am happy to be starting on my "journey" too....( it really does feel like a journey now) :driving:

~ thankyou for the tip of myfittness pal ( I will check it out )

~ and I am taking-on your committment of DAILY exercise as my own now also ( I have made a daily promise to myself of daily exercise - 1/2hr minimum to start.)

....... if Sarah can do it , Maryann can do it ! ...here I go....

what is it they say?....a Journey of a thousand miles begins with one step......

- so.....me & my dog Koko are out the door for our walk - ....one foot in front of the other.....

thankyou again Sarah for the support and ideas and advice,

Maryann

Good stuff Sarah! Congrats on the 180 mark . Seeing the golden number you've been striving for is a huge motivation.

Way to go Sarah! You're stories are inspirational and look at you go on the elliptical, for me the elliptical is very HARD! I'm so proud of you and I know you are proud of yourself. I'm also a little envious of all you'r travels lol I just wanted to say I really love your posts and you did a great job!! Thanks for the inspiration!

AHey y'all! Thanks to Marannc, kj67 and jessica23 for stopping by my diary today! It's always nice to hear from others...keeps me motivated...thanks!!

MaryannC: yes, if Sarah can do it, you can do it...there is no magic formula, or even magic diet...it's just good choices and some major determination with a plan, and help along the way from people on here and some other forums! Good job on taking your exercise goal..the dog walk is a great motivator to get out...dogs don't care about weather, schedules etc...they just want to get out! Go on and make Koko happy, and give yourself the gift of fitness!! Yes, the journey of any distance starts with the first step! We can do this together! One of the fat2fit guys is from Alberta, so who knows, you might be able to meet him and discuss your situation with him personally...wouldn't that be a hoot! He seems to be the brains behind the podcast to me anyway!

Kj67: thanks for your encouragement!! I'm not always so "positive"...and I'm by no means perfect...I just try to share what has worked (and not ) for me!

Jessica23: glad to know I can help! My travels will soon go way down (after about May of 2013, when my job goes into another phase) so don't get too envious!! Travel sucks for weight loss, I can tell you that, and if it wasn't required, I wouldn't be doing as much! By the way elliptical was hard when I first started, but with time, I've made it much easier..I'm in so much better shape than I was this time a year ago!

Today, after my long workout in the park, I took a break today. Good eating day, and stayed below my calorie goal! Had lots of energy today, and even thoug it was a long day at work, still came home with energy and good motivation..good way to start the week.

Have a great day everyone, and good choices to you!

Sarah

Sarah, one thing I've read is that communicating with other people that are dedicated to weight loss is a great strategy to stay focused on the goal. And, no one I know in person is really focused on weight loss. Some people that say they want to lose but then I see them not really doing the things that tell me they're trying...and everyone else is bored to death to discuss it. So this is really the only support for weight loss where I see people such as yourself and others who are striving hard. It's good to see it and makes me excited to stay focused too.

Hey Sarah, keep up the great work. Even though I'm not on the forum as much as I previously was, you're still a big motivator for me!! :) Have a great week!

Thanks kj67..you are so right...I don't discuss my weight loss with many people (other than my husband and my oldest sister, who is also on this journey)...most people are either jealous, not interested or trying to get you to try their latest magic diet that can go alot faster than I'm on track to do...this forum is really great to have people together with like goals and desires!

Thanks Munch...so good to see you maintaining...that's so good and gives me motivation that it is good hope that it is possible...one of these days!

Spurred on by another post on here, I decided to update my questions from about a year ago on here...always interesting to see what I was thinking this time last year!

1. What is your current height and weight?[/b]
5'7", 211lbs as of 1 Nov 2011 Update: 5'7", 183.9 pounds as of 18 Aug 2012
2. If you were at an ideal weight now, what would that weight be?[/b]
150 lbs Update: 143
3. At what weight would you like to be at four months from now?
180 Update: (boy sure didn't make that one...I'm still over 180 and it's a year later! So 4 months from now at 3 pounds/month, I should be at 170-172 by Dec 2012)
4. Why do you want to lose weight?[/b]
To look good, avoid diabetes which runs in my family and get back in shape I was before entering basic training. Update: same
5. Do you want to lose weight for a specific life event such as wedding or reunion? If so, when is that event?[/b]
Not really, but I do have a family reunion in May 2012 that would be a good surprise for my family! Update: Rocked the family reunion in May...and they were totally suprised! Now, big goal is Feb 2013 cruise!
6. What obstacles could get between you and your weight loss goals?[/b]
Business trips.Update: Same, and from time to time my husband can sabotage me...(thinks he knows better than I do how to lose the weight, when his methods have not worked on himself, but mine are working for me!)
7. Why do you think that you now have a weight problem?[/b]
Clothes are too big and the mirror doesn't lie! I don't look good and not in as good of physical shape as I used to. BMI scale says I'm obsese and it's right. Update: BMI scale now says overweight, but at least not obese anymore!
8. What lifestyle changes do you think would help you lose weight?[/b]
Keeping the workout schedule, no deserts, no softdrinks...and keeping the routine during business trips.Update: same
9. Have you lost weight in the past? If so, what has worked in the past to help you lose weight?[/b]
I've lost alot of weight over my lifetime...when I was in the Active Army Reserve, I had a weigh in each month (always seemed to be on the weight control program :-(). Typically exercised and had to always be on a "diet" (no sweets etc...but always "rewarded myself" after the weighin). Update: same...except now, I don't feel like I'm "on a diet"...I'm changing my lifestyle..this is the way I want to live and eventually, I will be at the weight of a fitter, thinner person I want to be!
10. Why do you believe that you did not lose weight or you gained the weight back?[/b]
To easy to eat the "feel good" food. Food has always been a comfort for me. Update: Same
11. What, if anything, has not worked for you in the past in helping you to lose weight? Why do you think it did not work?[/b]
Counting calories...too complicated and my husband does all the cooking, and he's not willing to do this. Update: Currently counting calories, thanks to a mobile app that takes away the complications. Food rewards have sabotaged my weightloss in the past.
12. Would you try writing down all food and drink consumed for a given period of time?[/b]
Yes, but I don't like this. Update: Currently using myfitnesspal to do this, makes it easy!
13. Do you cook at home often? If so, what do you cook?[/b]
No, my husband cooks...we eat here in a hotel (home) for breakfast, then he fixes me lunch (left overs from weekend restaurant food), then no dinner. Update: same except that I do eat a small dinner right now, typically a small dinner about 300-350 cal.
14. How often do you go out to eat? Where do you go?
Typically once per weekend. Update: same
15. What are your three favorite foods?
Steak, potatoes, but also like Chinese food Update: same
16. What are your three favorite restaurants?[/b]
Local Chinese restaurant, any good US steak house, Update: same
17. What are three things you can do differently when it comes to food?[/b]
Not overeat. Drink lots of water during the day. Update: 1) Eat non processed , simple foods 2) Drink lots of water 3) No soft drinks
18. If you woke up tomorrow and your body was exactly the way you want it, what would be different?[/b]
I would weigh 60lb's ( less hips, less belly). Update: I would weigh 143 with 25% bodyfat, wearing a size 8-10 clothing (new wardrobe in my closet) and all my blood stats in great shape.
19. Do you eat when you are not hungry?
Sometimes. Update: No, not any more, and my metabolism is fired up most all the time so I eat snacks during the day to keep it that way!
20. Do you binge eat (large amounts at a time)?
not typically, but when I do, it's a "reward" for sacrifices in the past! Update: same
21. Do you hide your food or eat in secret?
No. Update: Same
22. Do you eat when you are sad, nervous, or depressed?
Yes. Update: same...although not now...all of these were reasons to "eat at" my problems in the past
23. Do you eat as a reward?
Yes...Update: this was always the sabotage for diets past.
24. Do you eat while watching TV or using the computer?[/b]
No, except in the office at work. Update: Sometimes yes, especially for dinner after a long day at work and I just want to collapse and relax with a bowl of fruit...I'm bad to do this at work with my office...probably need to quit doing this!
25. What do you normally eat for a meal?[/b]
chinese veggies, rice, meat. Update: Breakfast: 2 eggs, 2 chinese veggies, 1 meat, 1 fruit; Lunch: Rice, Chinese veggies, meat, 1 fruit: Dinner: 1 fruits, nuts, hot tea
26. What type of snacks do you eat?
walnuts, almonds, dried fruits. Update: Walnuts, fresh fruits
27. In terms of exercise, what, if anything, are you currently doing?[/b]
1 hr elipitcal
28. Where do you go for exercise? A local public gym? School/work gym? Home?[/b]
fitness center in hotel Update: Same
29. What, if anything, are your three favorite types of exercise?[/b]
walking on treadmill, rowing (to stretch my back after walking on treadmill), eliptical Update: Elliptical, Running/Walking on treadmill or outside, Bike riding
30. What is your daily/weekly/monthly/yearly motivation to move towards your goals?[/b]
The number on the scale. Clothes feeling looser than they did last week. Taking clothes to be taken up! Update: same

31. Do you have rewards for certain goals?[/b]

Buying new clothes! Update: new clothes and new jewelry (losing weight on my fingers and wrist!)

Hi scbibhouse & kj67 - so true - it is so great to have this forum to share - folks without weight issues just don't understand some of what we struggle with - & it's so nice to share here without any "hype"- just like -minded people doing "real" work to lose weight and get healthy. :iagree:

cheers,

Maryann C.
