safe/effective exercise?

I heard of this one exercise from my friend, but I can't find it anywhere, I think he might have made it up.

It's like a weighted sit up, just your on your side, and it's meant to work the obliques. Just laying on your side with one leg under something, you sit up, holding a DB. My freind calls them side sit ups.

I tried them a couple times, they seemed ok, I could definately feel the work from them, but I just want to make sure they're safe before I continue any more.
 
yeh its ok, start off without using weights for begginers. Make sure your technique is right too. eg keeping your body straight
 
What are you trying to accomplish with this exercise? The exercise you describe sounds like a movement emphasizing the obliques. Are you attempting to develop stronger obliques?
 
seems alright. say they would be called weighted oblique crunches. just be sure to keep your back straight throughout the movement.
