Quick Question about Cardio/Weights

Currently been lifting weights 3x a week, full body workout each time, and then doing cardio 5x a week (20 minutes on an excercise bike). I read somewhere that doing cardio burns up your muscle as well as fat? So am I slowing down my muscular development by doing the cardio? Sounds rediculous to me but I did just read that in one of the posts. Another question I had is how I can be 5'9 140 pounds and look decent in the chest, shoulders, arms, ect but have a 32 inch waste with a barely visible top 2 abs... I'm still around 13% body fat and I plan on getting a six pack by summer but something seems weird to me. I'm almost 17 and it seems a little strange that I would have to lose like 10 pounds to have a six pack. Doesn't it sound a bit skinny to be 5'9 125-130 pounds? Any advice or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Doing a lot of cardio without adequate calorie intake can cause you to lose muscle mass. Your cardio sessions are short, so you shouldn't have to worry. Are you eating plenty?
Sounds like you just have a tendency to hold more fat in your stomach than other places. There are a lot of people like oyu who would have to get super lean for those abs to pop out.

Actually I've been trying to cut down on calories and do cardio so that I can get rid of that belly fat. At the same time I don't want to have it ruin my work with weights though. I think I'm going to start incorporating some whey protein to get me an extra 45-50 grams of protein each day that way I still have something to build muscles with while I eat less and do cardio. My main goal is to lose the belly fat first, and at least hold my ground with the weights so that I can work on that after I get rid of the extra weight. In other words I have a higher priority to lose the weight and belly fat than I do in getting big muscles. However, I have been doing weights for a while now and I don't want to lose ground, so I will continue lifting while I lose the weight. Does this sound like it could work?

omg you sound exactly like me. I have the exact same problem, look decent everywhere pretty much except the abs. I'm 5'10 and 145 and i have pretty much the same workout except I only do cardio around 2-3 times a week. From what ive learned keep doing what your doing, but eat a lot of super clean food. Like plenty of grilled chicken breast, tuna, other fish and not much fat. Get as much of that as you can.

I still have the same question though im 145 and 5`10 and I don't consider myself skinny, i can bench more than my own weight no problem. The problem is how much more fat do i need to lose to get that six pack. Cause i know people who are 180 and around my height and have one.

Yes, it is possible to become catabolic (when your body breaks down muscle tissue into glucose because it's completely out of energy reserves). However this won't happen if you're eating enough and properly. You will hear people afraid of this everywhere you go, but the fear is overexagerated. Remember, your body doesn't use food directly out of your stomach when you excercise, your body draws energy from stored or reserved energy (which is a topic all its own). As long as you keep the stores topped off, you will NOT become catabolic, as this is your body's last resort. Anyway, yes it is strange, you should not be worried about getting a six pack by summer, your 16. You need to lay a foundation for your muscle building golden years (your 20's). That's when your testosterone and your hgh peak. Hate to disappoint ya but you're still a tiny bit too young to pack on serious muscle. You should just eat well and be active, and do light weights. Do your squats, pushups, pullups, crunches and just be a kid.

Does it matter if you do weights and cardio the same day? different day? What's best?

It depends on your goals. If your're trying to bulk up your really should be doing the absolute minimum on cardio at a low intensity and seperated from your weight routine. (you need all the calories you can muster for muscle building). If your're trying to burn alot of fat, you do high intensity cardio almost every day, paired with compound movements training large muscle groups with lighter weights every other day. It all depends, what are your goals?

I agree that I'm still too young to go for big muscles. That isn't my real goal. I just want to slim up in my stomach area, get some decently toned muscles, and well defined abs. I am seeing results from the weight lifting even when combined with cardio. After every weight workout I take whey protein in a shake with about 50 grams of protein total. I also do cardio almost every day. Like I said before, my main goal is the toned muscles and defined abs. Therefore, all im trying to accomplish with the weights is muscle definition, and maybe a little size, and then the cardio is for abs.

Well I want an athletic body. Solid and toned, not too big and a six-pack. I weigh 145lbs and am 5`10. I figured cardio will help with the 6-pack, but I dont want to interrupt muscle development. Right now I do cardio on separate days. Basically I want to burn the fat and gain the muscle, but I always hear about bulking, where i guess people just gain crazy muscle and than cut after. Can't they be done together?
