Quick Answer!

Protein and Weight Gainers

Ok i went to a store called MaxMuscle by my house, and they have really low prices for all supplements, about as low as i've seen online too. But any i went in and talked to the guy cuz i was gonna get Optimum Nutrition 100% whey protein. The guy told me that whey protein isn't gonna do anything for me, since i want to bulk up. He said i need other things like carbs and so he suggested some weight gainers. He basically said i need something that will stay in me for about 4 or 5 hours.

Also, i told him i just started a push/pull/legs routine. He said i'm way off. He said it's only good for cutting, and i should be doing one muscle a day for about an hour a day. What do you guys think about what he said? Because i was gonna buy the protein but after he said all that i figured i'd come home and ask around.

Also, he told me to take the weight gainer 3 times a day. Since it would usually only last me 11 days if i took it once, that mean it should only last me about 3 days? To me that would be a huge waste of money. And if there's one thing i don't have, it's money. Also, what's the best time to take the weight gainer if i buy it? Should i take it before i workout so i have carbs and protein ready after i workout? Or should i wait and take it right after the workout?

The guy at maxmuscle is wrong. Explain to him that you are periodizing your workouts and that you're going to use a hypertrophy block and a push/pull/leg workout can induce these gains just fine because you'll be using enough volume and intensity.

You might also tell him that you don't want a mass gainer because of the sugars in it and you don't want to spike your insulin levels with simple sugars except postworkout.

You can easily add a couple extra thousand calories with a couple cups of cottage cheese through the day, a cup and a half (12 ounces) of almonds, a cup of oatmeal, and a few protein shakes and it would cost way less than consuming a bunch of mass gainer. Yes you'll want more carbs--get some fruit and vegetables.

Yeah i told him about this forum. he kept saying oh yeah don't listen to people ont he computer, i do this for a living blah blah blah. Then i talked to my friend who used to bodybuild, and he told me it would be a good idea to do the weight gainer instead because it has the right ratio for proteins and carbs. It sucks, you always get a different opinion on everything when it comes to weightlifting.

I know what you mean ive been on the bodybuilding / fitness area for a few years and study alot. I still say and always will say the hardest part of fitness is sifting through all the myths and strate out lies. personaly im not a big fan of weightgainers simply because there is easyer, cheaper, healthy ways of doing it (one of which is mentioned perviously).
a generalized ratio is 40% protein 40% carbs 20% fats use that ratio to figure out what you want to be eating, give you a place to start from. nothin wrong with whey protein it's cheep and easy.

Biggie,

I spoke with Todd today (he's currently Mr. Arkansas for bodybuilding) and he said to go with foods (like i've mentioned) and some whey and you'll be fine. You'll need to raise your calories slowly instead of a bunch at once.

Ok cool. I bought 1 thing of weight gainer, just to try it out. But i think after this i'm just gonna stick with whey protein cuz it's cheaper and lasts longer. Anyway, ever since i started using fitday, which was like 2 weeks ago, i've been gaining weight. I usually take in about 500-1000 calories more than i burn. And it's all healthy food too, i eat fast food maybe once a week, but sometimes not at all. In the last 2 weeks i've gained 2 pounds, so i think i'm fine with whey protein and a push/pull/legs workout.
