question about aikido (and just general MA)

If I had to choose from the two, I would go with the ju-jitsu. You will learn some striking either place. I myself studied TKD so I have the strikes but my ground game isn't where I would like it. Every watch an older Steven Segal movie, thats aikido! Keep in mind that I am probally going to tell you that I am confidant with my striking ability to never get to the ground, and someone who studies ju-jitsu will argue that point!

If MMA is what you're wanting to do, Aikido isn't a good choice for you.

jiu-jitsu, or judo is better suited for MMA than Aikido is, as much as I hate to admit it.

If you want to compete in MMA, then no...Aikido won't do well for you. The UFC is not the be-all-end-all despite what some will have you believe. Take a martial art because you enjoy it over anything else. I have a friend who has studied Aikido for many years and he does well to defend himself in the street. The fact that you're studying something puts you in a better position than studying nothing.

If warfare type martial arts is what you are after-go for some Krav Maga.

Jujitsu is cool given that it's not strictly lay-n-pray style. Look around and see what's in your area and spend some time with each of the classes.

ju-jitsu is far from 'lay n pray'. I cracked a rib in my college ju-jitsu course I took (I needed 1 more credit hour for full time status) because my partner didn't throw me correctly. ju-jitsu is all about grappling, standing, kneeling or prone...and using your attackers weight to your advantage...tipping them off balance, using leverage, etc.

it was very demanding, physically...though most martial arts are...I'd wager to say its easier to get banged up in ju-jitsu, cuz you can't really practice unless you're 'sparring' in some sense of the word...vs throwing kicks and stuff at a heavy bag by yourself to practice TKD.

i study jiujitsu :p and just since you said it, ill argue your point:p Everytime youre practicing striking and takedown defence, theres someone else practicing takedowns :p But its importaint to be confident in your skills, that way you are less likley to be taken to the ground :)

LOL, yeah I hear you. You know if someone who never took TKD would google it, they would find high kicks and such. There is so much more to it then that I can't even begin.
Fighting in competition showed me that and I competed until I was 47! It's like anything else, you learn to adapt. I think my highest quality right now in my life is not to be surprised, and that will keep me in theory from the ground, has worked so far.:D

yeah, and anyways, when it comes to the best use of marial arts, which is self defence, you dont really need to have practiced a striking art for 40 years to be able to avoid getting taken down by your average street thug, no jiujitsu/other grappling practicioneer with a black belt is gonna attack you just like that anyways.

Unless you kill their master. In which case, you already killed the master, and you don't need to worry about some lowly student.

I didn't say that jujitsu was solely a lay-n-pray style. I have just seen a few schools that spend far to much time on the ground and not enough incorporating of all around training. For example-if you go to a Brazilain jujitsu tournament you will not typically see strikes because the emphasis is on submissions. This is why we saw so much cross training between BJJ and Thai boxing until MMA became a cirriculum since the original poster brought reference to MMA.

But back to the original question of will Aikido make him look like an idiot-no. If your goal is to compete, then Aikido is not the preferred art to learn.

Well, if you practice MMA you are prepared for most things that could happen to you, striking, ground game, etc. Id say if you want to be good defending yourself if you get attacked on the street MMA is the way to go, same if you want to compete.

If your just looking into MMA, then you better be perpared to spend alot of wasted time. If your into competition, yeah go for it, otherwise I would just pick something that you are able to afford and know the backround of the teacher. Go for it and good luck.
