Pushup question

I am currently training to get into the Police Acadamy.. there are a few requrements to pass a physical fitness test...

I am supposed to do approx. 21 pushups in a min, but every time I try to do one, I can't seem to lift the lower half of my body off the floor.. I can do "girlie" pushups like there is no tomorrow, and if I try really hard, I can do "real" pushups.. but only about 15 before I 'think I'm gonna die" (when I am able to do them I often find myself using my knee to help lift the lower portion of my body when I come up.. i.e.. It looks like my body is doing "the wave"..lol)

Is my problem in the lower back? or chest? any advive on bettering my pushup form?

You will be able to do more in no time....every couple of days do 1 or two more. You will be able to do 21 in 2 weeks or less. Another idea is to bring yourself up into the 'proper' push-up position and hold it for 10 sec, and slowly bring yourself down and repeat... ;)

Yeah.. when I first started, I could NOT lift myself up at all..lol.. granted I had never really done a pushup before in my life :p

I just (10 min ago) did 3 reps of 15, which I was very surprised I could do.. but I am still having problems lifting up the lower part of my body.

this is mainly due to weakness in the lower back...it will get stronger. To strengthen your lower back more without having to do push-ups try supermans:
-Lay flat on the floor face down
-lift your right arm and left leg off the floor and hold for 2 sec, switch to left arm and right leg.
-continue and try to push them high off the ground.
-try this quickly and slowly and alternating holding for 10 sec.
Hope this helps.

if u do get to 21/min, don't stop there ... go for about 30-35, that will guarantee that you can do them anytime on demand. I've been working on a pushup/situp/pullup routine for 8 weeks now, and i have seen huge improvements ... i started out hardly being able to do the week 1 requirements of 4x15 pushups ... now i'm on 6x30 (still not able to finish set 6, but it's coming along) ... u'll notice fast improvements ESPECIALLY if you haven't done them before.

When doing push ups, rememeber to keep ur back straight and ur ass up. You should easily be able to lift ur lower end.
