"Protein Myth"

From what I'm aware, most enzymes are proteins. If what he is saying is true, then he really is getting his protein, it's just that no one ever knew that fruits and veggies contained so much protein. If enzymes aren't protein, just amino acids together and somehow have different properties than proteins, then you still get your amino acids, that's what counts.

I don't know what he says about us not being able to study raw foods.. I don't get why we wouldn't be able to figure out what a raw apple contains. Mreik could probably answer that one. I'm gonna try asking a friend of mine who studies biochem about this the next chanse I get. Unless Mreik showes up here first. I don't know if foods actually contain enzymes or if we have to make all our enzymes ourselves. PM mreik and get him to come in and save the day :p

It is true that the body breaks down protein to amino acids. So if you consume amino acids your in the clear.

Yes, all enzymes are proteins, and the body does break proteins down into amino acids to metabolize them, but there are 20 essential amino acids. Don't some only occur in heterotrophs? If there's no way to study raw foods, how does this guy know he's getting all the EAA's?

The raw food lifestyle is a bit scary and definitely not based on modern nutritional science. It's another fad. They believe it's a more "pure" way to eat. It has a few problem though, like being extremely low calorie and lacking in some essential nutrients. But it makes them feel good to eat like that. It makes them feel special.

The fad of raw dieting and how conceited these people tend to be is not the issue here. Trying to find out if his claims have any merit.

I'll try to find some info on this as well.

Cooking protein "denatures" it and of course it's easier to process amino acids in an uncooked state. Why eat denatured protein? Because you get the benefits of thermogenesis.

He doesn't exactly look very healthy, and if he's only 39, I'll eat my hat. He looks like he's close to 50. Reason enough not to eat his groovy diet ...

Even if this was true, how in the world would you get enough calories eating apples and carrots all day?

39 looks like a reason able age for him...he looks kinda skinny though

Skinny? Gaunt is more like it. And I love how he says that he's got too much muscle for a runner, as if he's bragging. I'd actually like to know where that muscle is, because I sure didn't see any ...

There's no way he's 39. He looks waaaaaaay older than I do.

I like how they say it's "the natural human diet" Why do we have canine teeth perfectly designed for tearing meat?

I'd say you look young for 39 and he looks about average....and maybe his wrinkles show up more because he's so skinny LOL

There are 9 essential amino acids. All of them are available from plant foods.

Fruit is fairly low in protein relative to its calorie content. Leafy vegetables are actually very high in protein relative to their calorie contents, but are so low in calories that you have to eat enormous amounts of them to get sufficient calories and protein if you did not eat other more calorie and protein dense foods.

I'm older than 39, Gooch ;)

That's what I was talking about, just less eloquently :action11:

I just read an article where the guy tried a raw diet for 30 days. He had to eat about 8 1/2 lbs of food to get 2300 calories, so I'd have to eat close to 20 lbs of food to get my current caloric intake

Hmmm, I guess his raw food did not include any of this:

The shashimi looks nice. Believe it or not, some people following a raw food diet can and do eat animal products, just raw ones.

There are raw vegans, of course, but there are also raw foodists.

The latter probably have a much easier time getting all of their essential amino acids. I would guess, however, that the raw vegans vastly outnumber the omnivorous raw foodists.

He looks like a skinny person around his claimed age (but where is the claimed "15 pounds overweight of muscle"?). Remember that the average 39 year old in the US is overfat.

A skinny person's face may appear older because in older people, body fat decreases in the face, even though it may increase in the abdomen if you are not careful.

He is probably eating a lot of food if he is eating mostly fruits and vegetables (low calorie density) and is doing a lot of running or other exercise.
