Post Partum Workout

Hello,

I'm new to the forum and wasn't sure which topic to pick to post under. Weight loss is my goal so here we go.

I'm currently pregnant, due anytime now, and my fiance and I need to get into shape after our son arrives. I gained 35 horrible pounds during pregnancy and I can't wait to get into shape after the baby comes. I was just wondering if anyone had any post partum workout ideas to start with. I know that my calorie intake will be different if I choose to breastfeed.. but so far we have a plan to do cardio 5 days a week and weight train for 3 of those days. I'd like to do as many things outside as possible because my maternity leave will be 12 weeks of summer. Thanks for your help!

I was really active before pregnancy.. and well during my pregnancy not so much. I work full time in a lab and I'm running around the hospital all day but as far as extra exersize just walking.. no weight training. I know I'm going to be really tired when our little one arrives but I'm not sure how I should approach this weight loss plan.

congratulations on your imminent arrival

I take it this is your first child? If you were in pretty good shape before the pregnancy you're likely to get back there in time after the pregnancy. If this is your first child you'll soon find out that making plans often isn't always realistic. The baby takes a lot of work but you might find that it's so rewarding and so amazing that most of what you give up will seem relatively unimporant.

I had paternity leave when we had my first son. It was a month long starting when he was 5 weeks old. I remember thinking that I was going to get a lot of stuff done. I was frustrated for the first day and a half because my son took so much time I could barely get showered and do the essential things around the house. Then it donned on me that the important thing was being a good dad and enjoying the experience with him. Those 4 weeks were amazing and rewarding.

So, you may think you have a set of priorities now but they may change once the baby is here.

As far as getting in good shape, both cardio and building muscle help with weight management. Try to do some of both. You're going to be busy and interrupted a lot with a baby. Just be sure to pick something that can be flexibly done and something that you like to do. An exercise video or some routine you put together yourself may be the most practical with a baby in the house.
