i seem to be putting on weight everytime i eat pasta, is it like this for anyone else? its a real blow for food i really enjoy. also in the cook books its saying its very low in cal but how can it be if its making me put on weight?

Pasta isn't low in calories at all. Depending on what kind (wheat, egg), it can be rather high in calories.

Also depends on what amounts you eat. A handful of it is alright, but a heaped plate of spaghetti won't help with losing weight.

It can be very high cal ,especially with creamy or calorie laden sauces.
It's best to only have a portion of 40 grams uncooked (no more than 70 grams per person is advised if you want more than 40 grams) and switch to whole wheat/grain, as that takes longer to digest making it Low GI and has added fibers.
Also, some sauces have very high content of fat in them, and salt, sugar, etc everything that hikes up the cals.
You can make a nice sauce from scratch with tomato purée, spices and add loads of veg and a little of lean mince beef and then it's still yummy but healthier.

There's Barilla Plus that has added protein, or you could also consider whole grain pasta also. Another reason that you might be gaining weight from pasta is that it is very often served with a lot of salt, thus making you retain water. (take a look at the Barilla website).
Count your calories also! You could just be eating too much!

I'm just getting into counting calories- but I am IN LOVE with pasta...I could eat and eat and eat and eat pasta! I absolutely LOVE it! However, some things I always stick by is making sure I buy whole wheat pasta, and make my own sauce!

There are LOTS of yummy sauces you can make that are really healthy!

I like to combine cherry tomatos, onions, fresh garlic, and pepper in a non-stick frying pan, and cook it on med heat until the tomatoes are all mushy! I think mix it with my pasta and eat away!

A lot of premade sauces, cream sauces, cheesy sauces are high in sugar! Even using canned tomato sauce/paste can be quite high in sodium and sugar!

But I think it's important to know that moderation is key! :)

Good luck! And if you come across any yummy recipes, shoot them my way!! I ALWAYS love a good pasta :)

(I deleted my original post because I wanted all of this together)

Actually FiberGourmet pasta claims to be lighter in calories.

Here is an example of their spaghetti nutritional facts:
# 130 calories per serving, 40% fewer than standard pasta
# 18g fiber per serving - 72% of the Daily Value
# Nutrition Facts backed by actual laboratory analysis
# Convenient 1/2 lb packages with a 2 year shelf-life
# Kosher certified by the Kof-K
# 40% fewer "net carbs" than standard pasta
# Only 2 WW Points
(standard pasta is 4, whole wheat is 3)

Ingredients for Classic pasta (all shapes)
: Durum Semolina Flour, Modified Wheat Starch, Wheat Gluten

They have a variety of pastas. All of them have stats like I showed above. I haven't tried it yet. I just heard about this about three weeks ago. I am planning on buying some to try it out. The spaghetti I last had was 220 per serving. FiberGourmet is 130. It's up to each person to decide whether 100 or more calorie means anything to them.

Some pasta swaps are
-Shirataki Noodles (the tofu kind has more of a pasta bite)
-Squash Spaghetti
-Long Slaw

You could also use less than a serving of regular pasta and then bulk it up with something like squash spaghetti and it will look like a nice size portion.

You know you should really watch the Pasta episode on the show called Hungry Girl. There is a lot of good advice on that show about swaps or alternatives. Check it out!

I love pasta myself. Hope this helps at least a little bit.

pasta is by far my greatest weakness (cheese coming a close second). so this is all personal experience.

i found it much much easier to cut it out all together than to eat it in moderation.

Eating something you really love in moderation is like telling an alcoholic that he can have a sip of alcohol when he REALLY needs it, it doesn't work (for me anyway).

If you really must keep on eating it i would swap to an "unrefined" version, the dark brown stuff, it fill you up much fast and will keep you full for longer. like swapping to brown bread from white :)

Also i heard some time ago that Pasta is actually the mans comfort food of choice, where as women tend to reach for chocolate or ice cream, men reach for pasta or cheese. Not massively relevant but interesting all the same. hehe

good luck mate, we've all been then :)
