online BMI calculators

Does anyone here have faith in the online BMI calculators? I put in that im 5'6 - 5'7 and weigh 175-180 pounds and I come out that Im obese. Dont get me wrong, I have some chub but its really just a little beer gut and small love handles. I mean, i have defined pecs and my calves are ripped to shreds as well as my quads. Do I get a bad reading because Im short, or because I also have weight in muscle that the calculator doesnt take into effect?

if you have any muscle at all, those BMI calculators are a load of crap. since height and weight are the only input variables, they basically assume taht muscle doesnt exist. I come out with a BMI of 27.1, and I've never thought of myself as overweight.

freddy's right ... if you are one solid guy, then you are going to appear very obese with these calculators since muscle weighs more than fat ... the quickest, cheapest and most accurate test of fitness is BF% ... go to your local gym and get 'pinched' ...

the sad part is that a lot of the government health statistics are based on BMI...even though there is a huge portion of the population for whom that measurement is faulty

Thanks for clearing that up, as I was quite disheartened to learn that I was obese. I knew it was fishy when muscle weight was not taken into consideration.
