Hey guy!
So I was on this forum back in 2008, I did great! I lost all my weight going from 250- 135, But sadly things took a turn for the worst.
I had to go on some really hardcore meds to keep me sane for awhile there :chillpill:, and slowly my weight went up :( I was so drugged up that I didn't even really care, and my doctors seemed to just ignore it. It wasn't untill last month ( when i went off my medication) when I really noticed how much I gained, and how horrible I feel.
I Don't think i'm ugly, I think I'm beautiful, But I want to FEEL beautiful, I want to be able to run without feeling like i'm dying, I want to be able to walk places with my fiance, I want to fit into all the cute clothes at the stores that aren't sold in my size. And, I want to wear a swimming suit.
I tried to come back here before, but I was moving and having problems with internet, I was under TONS of stress that made me just want to sleep and shove my face with food.
But this isn't going to work anymore, I need to lose weight, I need to feel, and be HEALTHY!

So... here it goes :)
Starting weight 244- goal - 135
I am not giving myself a time limit on this,
I gave up all soda a week ago,
And during all this ( This is going to be DIFFICULT) I want to quit smoking for good.

Hello ;)

If you did it once, you sure can do it once more. This time with more experience of what you are going through things should be a little easier, just remember it's a day by day thing, and YOU are in control. No problems, only solutions ;)

Cheer and good luck !

Welcome,

Well done on quitting soda. And I hope we can support you in your goals to lose weight and quit smoking.

You can quit smoking for good and lose weight at the same time though i am very wary of time limits. I think its actually a good idea to do the same together.

Normally what happens is people quite smoking then they put on weight and then they have to lose the weight they gained. Or it could go the other way. People lose the weight first and then, when they achieve that, they quit smoking. And then its probable that they gain weight and and have to work at that all over again.

It probably doesn't matter which order you do it but i think the best way is to do it both at the same time. One of the key factors in making it successful is daily exericse.

Here's how it can work. Get away from everyone who smokes for about three days. Going hiking for a long weekend is a good way as you won't be able to buy any cigarettes if you are out in the sticks. When i quit i was sick and went to bed - was too deep in my dreams to want to go to a shop. In this very short period of time, your actual physical addiction is over and you won't be craving minute by minute. After that you've only got the oral habit and that's when you are likely to want to keep shoving things in your mouth.

The way I found around that was to take up daily exercise straight away. So i started building my fitness and moderating my diet at the same time with lots of vegetables - stir fries, asian noodle recipes and stuff like that. You know lots of low fat good stuff. At the time my basic breakfast was weetbix and milk with honey. Now i can do better than that even. I think i might have given myself permission to eat whatever i needed to so long as it was really healthy and low fat.

If you are very unfit, you don't have to kill yourself. Just start walking. Walk for an hour a day if you've got the time. 30 minutes a day if you haven't. Or 30 in the morning and 30 in the afternoon. After about one month you can start running and then you just gradually increase your distance. But be careful with running if you weight is up because its very hard on the knees. Might be better to take up swimming rather than running -freestyle not breastroke because that gets your heartrate well up while breastroke for most people is like strolling. Or even cycling. (more on that if you decide on this option)

The walking and swimming will help you moderate your food intake believe it or not. I think its because your mood will lift and as you feel better you will start to want to not eat so much. Given you mental health history, this is an especially good strategy for you. Exercise really does do wonders for your mood.

I have written at length about my quit smoking experience on Tally's thread in the diary section. You might find it helpful.

I must say i am concerned about you going off your medication. Did you do this with a doctor's advice, approval or awareness? I am pretty sure i know what sort of meds you are talking about. And it is a problem that they cause weight gain so i totally sympathise.

I have depression but luckily my meds don't cause weight gain. If you need any sort of mental health support group, i can direct you to a good forum. I am fortyfour over there too. :)

Thank you so much for the advice! I am doing lots of swimming, and for quitting smoking I plan to just keep busy! Lots of walking, hula-hooping, swimming, and other things!

I talked to my doctor about getting off of my medication and they helped me, I didn't do it alone, and Did it slowly. :D I know the most important thing with having a mental illness is talking with your doctors, and family. But I sure would like a link to that if you'd give me it.
Thank you!

Oh i am glad to hear you did it with your doctor's support.

Its easy to find the Tally's diary. Look in page one or two of the weight loss diary section.

The name of the person who started the thread appears below the title so just look for her name.

If you have a look and still can't find it, i will dig up the link tomorrow but i am very tired now.

Oops maybe i misunderstood what link you wanted. I think now you mean the depression site. Its called depressiontribe.com

The chat room can be good but as i said it won't help you much with weight loss but i think its not a bad place to hang out when you are dealing with mental health issues.
