not eating before bed!!!!!!!

ok,i am wanting to eat at night out of boredom and habit because this is what I used to do: watch some tv, relax and hey why not eat some sugary cereal, salty chips, and whatever else i can find! I was way over eating things that are not good for anyones body. and I know that was having a negative effect not only so far as my wieght goes but also, my skin and just my general feeling, tired, cranky, moody. So, I am sticking to a lower calorie diet ( 1250-1600 with sparkpeople). the night grazing is getting easier and if i am truly hungry, i will eat something healthy like some grapes or have a glass of milk.

From what Ive seen about sparkpeople, there recommendations are also far from healthy (I know I might take some heat there).

Its not that you dont have to not eat at night. Its that you plan your meals for the day. If you eat 6 times, for example, you could eat at 8am, 11am, 2pm, 5pm, 8pm, and 11pm. If you plan and eat your total allotted calories, then you have no problem.

Not its just a matter of knowing how many calories you want per day and dividing them up throughout. If that means eating before, then thats what you do.

I would rather use my willpower to stick with a good diet, then to starve myself at night. You have to eat to lose weight, plain and simple.

Of course it doesnt stop your weight loss, but it can encourage muscle loss.

Nah, ive gained loads of muscle because i do weight lifting. What they call noob gains. Any muscle lost within 12 hours would be so tiny it would make no difference what so ever.
I dont starve at night. Starving is when you are in serious pain because you are not eating. Not eating at night isnt starving, its called dieting

It take 3500 calories to burn 1 pound of fat it also takes 3500 calories to gain 1 pound of fat. So if you decrease just enough calories or/and workout enough in a day then you will loose weight/fat. I as well eat every 3 hours small meals and 2 of them are after 7 pm and I have lost 60 pounds.

This is only true when your body is primed to do so. What happens when an anorexic or a fitness/physique competitor is down toward their setpoint, or even well below in many cases. 3500 calories is not going to do what you say. They are extreme examples, but also true for many others.

My husband is a competative body builder and he follows these rules and so have I. As far as being anorexic your metabolism needs serious help and can be repaired with following eating 6 times a day it will take time but will work. Seen it. But of course you need to find out what their TDEE is and go from there.

Oh, thanks for the advice. I was wondering how I was going to kick this anorexia.

You don't have to be a smart a$$. Just putting down what has worked for me since I have had weight problems and YOU don't and letting everyone know what has worked for me and my friends.

And by the way I don't think anyone here is anorexic or getting ready for a competion. They are looking for advise so I gave, sorry it didn't meet YOUR qualifications.

Oh, you must have missed this sentence. Let me help you:

"They are extreme examples, but also true for many others."

And because I have not had weight problems, this means I don't have the working knowledge of how the human body works? I will say this again on this forum. Does a doctor have to have cancer before they treat a patient with the disease?

I think that it is great that the people on this forum give advice and let everyone else know what is working for them. That way others cant take from other people and create their own weight loss regime.

I personally try not to eat after 8 PM, because it makes me feel like a slug. But I get up early in the morning and eat. Yet, I only eat 1200 cals a day. That is quite a bit of food because I try to eat fresh fruits and veggies daily. I dont inspire to be an anorexic or a buildy builder. I just inspire to be an attractive young woman ;)

Why not? I try to eat when I am hungry. I dont force food into me when I am not. I also walk and do pilates. I am up to 5 miles, 3 times a week, and pilates on the off days. Why is apprx 1200 cals a day bad? No one has told me before that it was.

Why not? That depends on a lot of variables of which I don't know about you, but your body requires a certain amount of energy intake, and if you are too far below this, disruptions can happen.

What kind of disruptions?

Hmmm.. I am 5'4", currently 129 pounds, I have a desk job for 8 hours a day. I used to weigh 105 about 10 years ago, up to 170 as my highest. I am not an athlete. I just started walking in Aug 06. I would say that I have a low matabolism. I have been loosing an average of 5 pounds a month with what I am currently doing. My thighs, hips, and butt have gotten slimmer from the walking. I started the pilates up to tone my core and to lengthen mucles. Do I have it all wrong? If you say to increase my cals, I will give it try!! But if it backfires and I gain, I am gonna kick your ass:D :D :D :D :D :p

This is not a personal attack nor is it directed solely at Steve, I believe it applies to a number of the professionals/fitness experts that have recently started to visit WLF.

And because I have not had weight problems, this means I don't have the working knowledge of how the human body works?

Not at all, you may have a very in depth knowledge of how the body works but I do not know that for sure. I think the problem lays elsewhere. As a relatively new member of this forum community most people do not know much about you or were you are coming from or what your experiences are. As we all know every forum, no matter what the focus, has a wide variety of people participating. Some of these people are truly helpful in providing good, correct information, others simple act like experts by regurgitating something they read 15 minutes ago, while others seem to give the worst advice on the planet and not know anything. Everyone needs to process and filter any advice they get and decide the merit of that advice. This is a process that takes time. It appears to me that you are getting very frustrated because people are not agreeing with and accepting your advice. I do not know the perfect solution to this but being combative and argumentative are probably not the best ways.

The other thing I have observed from some of your posts as well as from some of the other fitness guys is that while I truly believe that you guys are very knowledgeable when it comes to fitness and nutrition I think you are all lacking in the knowledge of the emotional side of being overweight, or in many cases on this forum, morbidly obese. There is a TON of emotional issues and baggage that many people on this forum carry from years of being fat. I think it would go a long way here if you would try to consider why many of us on the forum act and react the way we do. I believe that weight loss for many is so much more of a mental challenge than a physical one. I think it would serve you well to try to remember that. Anyway back to the thread topic.

I believe Tony is correct in saying that it does not really matter when you eat as long as you stay within you limits. But my problem is I tend to make the wrong/bad choices at night or I eat out of boredom or old habits. So I choose not to eat at night to keep myself in check and it has worked well for me. I believe many others here are in the same boat.

Remember guys some are us are or have gone from a life of total gluttony to trying to be healthier, we may not be eating or exercising perfectly but it is a heck of a lot better than we have done in the past. I may not be a poster boy of fitness but I am a whole lot better at 244lbs than I was at 365lbs. No, I did not do everything correctly and I made mistakes along the way but I am still so much better than I was.

So try not to get so frustrated and definitely do not give up on us, just give us time to get used to you and your ideas and get to know you better.

Remember you get more flies with honey…

Have a good day and talk to later guys.

My advice is if 1200 calories a day is making you lose body fat and its staying off, just carry on with it. Just as long as its not muscle loss, some bathroom scales can tell you if thats the case. 5lb a month is a perfectly healthy rate of weightloss.
If you hit a plateau, THEN i think it would be best to increase your cals for a while.
It's also impressive that you can stick to 1200 calories a day and feel satisfied with that lol.

Hi heidi,

I did your BMR, weight, height, and I guessed you are ~30 (sorry if your not, I went by the pic) BMR-1375.9. TDEE- then I multiplied bmr by activity level 1.375 came up with 1891.8 cal you burn in a day. This can help you out

BMR= cal burned @ rest

TDEE= activity level multipled by BMR

Hope this helps

Eating 3 hours before bed isn't going to help with weight loss. You can eat right before you go to sleep and be just as good as eating 3 hours before you go to sleep.

Just as long as you're eating the right foods and making sure you keep the calories within your maintenance window you'll be fine. Stay away from those "midnight snacks" Well, at least the unhealthy ones. ;)

Yep I am 30 ish. So in other words, I can maintain my weight if I eat 1890 cals a day. So if I want to loose I need to consume less the 1890 a day?

I actually highly respect these opinions you have stated here. Thanks.

In all actuality, I used to run a website for obese individuals. It was very successful and most of my clients made a lot of progress. The main focus of that site was the mind, long before nutrition or fitness. So I do understand the mentality of a very overweight persons, which varies from person to person. And I will admit, I have not approached this website like I did my own.

There is a major difference. Those people came to me through referral. Because of this pre-established relationship, there was no "back and fourth" about what was right and what was wrong. The nutrition and fitness side was explained and nothing was questioned, because results were there. The only variable that was a shade of grey, so to speak, was the psychology. But this too, was a success.

This website is the direct opposite, and rightfully so. Most here do not know me. At the same time, many people here like to go against the simple laws of physiology, and yes, it tends to tick me off when they still refute proven science. I understand that it is nothing personal against me, and I truly don't take it as so. That doesn't mean it doesn't bother me though. They may refute simply because a lot of misinformation has been preached on here for a long time and things have become engrained in their minds. Whatever the case may be, it still bothers me.

That said, I could probably handle myself differently. Will I? Haha, depends on my mood I guess. I am not here for money. I am also not here to make friends really. I have met some fantastic people here, and I am happy for that, but that is not my purpose. I am here to help, while being myself. Because of this, I don't think it is on me to "behave" a certain way. I don't have to be a "professional" in here, just as none of you do either. I don't care if I am labeled an "expert" on this forum or not, really. I am just going to keep being myself I think.

This said, again, I respect your post and will keep it in the back of my mind.
