No Pain, No Loss?

i think you can as long as you're xx miles from shore (or at least there was that loophole I remember from an episode of Gilligan's Island :D

I just figured out that people can vote on the thread ratings... I am so slow sometimes. Lol.

And... I'm sure I'm a little behind with this one... but, whats with this Pants Off Dance Off show? I haven't watched tv in ages and thats what I happened to channel surf past?

I'm so behind the times.

I was supposed to be keeping better track of foods I'm eating. I slacked off using fitday because a lot of the foods I was eating took far too long for me to figure out exact caloric amounts. Well, yesterday I was good and wrote down everything.

Yesterday's totals:
1592 Calories, 27 grams fat, 255 carbs, 85 protein
Exercise:
45 minutes on weights
35 minutes on the bike

:hug2:
My trip up the mountain was a lot of fun but I didn't lose a single
pound! In fact, I managed to gain one over the weekend. *sigh*
Oh well. Thats life. :D

My trip started at waking up around 4:30am to beat the Seattle traffic
down south and get to Mount Rainier's visitor center before the very
few parking spots filled up. The drive there was gorgeous and the
weather seemed absolutely perfect along the way.

Time for some mount rainier facts before I continue:
1. Mount Rainier is so big, it has three separate climate
zones, each with different flora and fauna and its large enough to
create its own weather.
2. Mount Rainier is an active volcano and has an elevation of
14,411 feet. That's really really high!
3. Mount Rainier is where the first Mount Everest training was done
due to the similar climates at the top.
4. Mount Rainier has some of the largest glaciers within the
contiguous 48 states.
5. Where I was hiking averages 630 inches of snowfall in a year and
the snow never melts away completely.
6. Every year thousands of people attempt a summit climb. Less than
half make it to the top.

That being said, I'd like to start out letting you all know that the
weather was indeed, incredible. There was a cloud layer on the upper
portion of the mountain all day and thats what I got to walk through!
There were places I was hiking where I couldn't see more than 6 or 7
feet ahead of me because the cloud was so thick. You could literally
wave through it and see it swirl. Even though the experience of
spending most of my day in a cloud was impressive, it meant that I
couldn't see much around me and there wasn't much to take for
pictures.

At 5800 feet in the meadows, the cloud mass was thin enough to see a
good 25-30 feet ahead. At 6200 feet that shortened to about 15-20
feet. At 7150 feet (about half way to the summit), the cloud was so
thick that I couldn't see far beyond my boots. :D

Overall, the hike kicked my butt. I was so stiff and tired afterwards!
I can't wait to go again. The plan is to make it to camp Muir (maybe
next spring) which is at 10,100 feet. If I can make it that far, the
summit is only a day's hike away. Woot!

I hear the fastest/easiest way down from the summit is to sit on your
but and slide down a glacier. Kinda scary when there are cracks in it
the size of mac trucks. :rotflmao:

Ok... gotta figure out how to add the pics.

Pictures in order left to right:
1. Wildflowers are everywhere up there. At least until you hit higher than about 6500 feet.
2. Thats what the path looked like a lot. If the cloud were any denser, my camera wouldn't take a pic of anything focused.
3. I think there were about 6 Marmots along the way, including one baby. He was adorable!
4. Glacier meltoff. This is a chunk of glacier that has broken away from the terminus and is slowly sliding down the mountain. It makes the prettiest little brooks! :D
5. Notice the cloud sitting on the mountain? This picture was taken from the decent after walking through that high point thick with cloud.

It was fun!

I'm Stuck!!

Okay, I'm seriously stuck on a plateau with weightloss. I'm bouncing between 180 and 181, but I haven't seen 179. I'm now at a weight that I maintained for almost a year. *sigh*

So I've decided to count up my deficit for each day (something I wasn't really doing) and see what the total is per week. If the number claims I've been shedding enough calories to shed some weight, but I haven't lost a thing, then I'm at a loss...

I'm hoping it was just a case of me slipping up and eating more than I realized.

I'm using fitday.com for calculating the deficit. I know its not 100% accurate, but I don't know what else to use.

We'll see what happens.

Sunny,

I just read your first three food diaries and I just want to tell you that you are doing such a great job! You've been eating healthy and staying strong. Congratulations on that!

Controlling my eating is probably the hardest for me, too. Once I get to the gym I'm good but eating.. I guess I could always do it :)

I'm glad you got back on the horse after the hamburger! I had In'n'Out the other night and I woke up and said, "I'm starting my diet NOW!"

What are your problem areas? I need to find a good exercise that gets rid of my back love handles and flattens my tummy. Know any?

Keep up the great work! :)

Hey Bride,

Thanks for stopping by! Amazing how a burger can be a turn around point for losing weight, eh? :D

My problem areas are my butt and my thighs. I have a whole lot o' junk in the trunk and not nearly as much anywhere else. The only way I'm going to slim these puppies down is to gradually lose the weight covering the beautifully sculpted muscle below. :rotflmao:

As for the back, love-handle, and tummy issue.. this is what I do:
For my lower back: the If your abs are at all weak, chances are your lower back is the same and these will be good. There's usually an elevated stationary place you can do these in any gym.
For my sides: Same as the "Good Morning Sunshine" only its done on your side. These are tough but give you that nice hour-glass trimmed shape. I'd really recommend talking to a trainer about these exercises. They're also call back and oblique extensions.
For my abs: Pilates/yoga ball! There's so much you can do on that thing, its incredible. I do crunches as often as I can remember to. (Oops! Forgot to do mine today! I'll be doing them after I post this.)

For the full body cardio workout, I really like going the direction of hiking, walking briskly, riding a bike, and the occasional run. I've also heard that a lot of people are really enjoying Dance Dance Revolution for weight loss. I've been thinking of trying that one since I love video games. :D

If you are okay with doing exercises at home, you might want to pick up a pilates/yoga ball and maybe a video. You can do just about anything with those two alone.

Hope that helps!

HI,
I saw your question in my diary and thought to come here and look up yours to answer.
I had like a 3 week plateau. It was a combination of me slacking on my calorie tracking and not exercising hard enough. I invested into an HRM and made sure during cardio my heart rate is around 140-150 the whole time. Also upped my exercise (mainly cardio) to 6 days a week and to twice a day. Based on my HRM i exercised until I reached 600-750 cal loss/day. (about a good hr exercise)This is what helped me out of my plateau. My food was around 1500-1600 a day, I think I am around 1400-1500 now more closer to 1400. I know I saw a tread or article somewhere on plateaus but i can't remember where. Sorry .
Of course I am no expert, and I am not even sure the above is the right way ...:) It worked for me.
Hope you brake through it soon!! It almost killed my motivation, but don't let it get you down it just another curve-ball that you will over-come and come out stronger!!!

Wow, so you really had to bump up the overall deficit to get past the plateau?

Today's calorie totals:
1558 calories, 28 grams fat, 259 carbs, 78 protein

Exercise results are:
Bike - 320 calories
Weights - who knows?

Deficit = 1125 calories (Hmmmm... seems a bit much for one day..)

I think part of it is that I am a vegetarian and was eating healthy for the most part just did not look at my portions. Just adjusting my diet wouldn't have cut it. Also my body got used to the lower calorie intake and it just did not do anything for me anymore. And it also could be me past yo-yoing that messed up my metabolism...who knows. :)
I see your deficit shows over 1000/cal day, I don't even have mine that high and I am losing. What could be wrong? I averaged about 650 cal burn/day for the past week and about 300 cal deficit food (almost 1000/day) and lost 1.8 lbs.
To calculate my BMR and adjust my calorie intake I used the below calc.
Female BMR: 655+ (9.6 X weight in kg)+ (1.8 x height in cm)- (4.7 x age in years)
For sedentary life-style (I consider myself that, I sit all day in my office) you multiply it by 1.2. My results were 1808. So I eat about 1500 cal, resulting in 300 cal deficit, and add my exercised calories (650 ave/ day)and it seems to be the right amount of weight loss.
I am no expert and the above formula was taken off the internet, right or wrong I have no idea, seems to work for me. I read a tread somewhere about novices (like me) should not give out advices they are not sure of.. Well, I am no trainer just an internet junkie and I searched high and low to break through my plateau.

Also my treadmill and my HRM are never showing the same amount of calories burnt. I don't trust the equipment measurements anymore, I just look at my HRM.
I hope you will start losing soon. Congrats on the 36 lbs loss!! You will start losing again soon.

So in total you're losing about 900+ calories each day (with deficit and exercise). Thats really what I'm doing. I'm only at about a 600 deficit plus exercise, although today and yesterday were a little higher in deficit than normal.

I'll keep an eye on the deficit results and see what comes of it.

(I'm going to start having nightmares of a scale chasing me with the number 181 on it... i just know it!)

I'm really liking the trainer I saw at the gym and considering buying the "full package". So far, most of the exercises he's showed me have kicked my butt far more than just about anything else I've done at the gym.

My current favorite is a modification of the leg press machine. I cross my right ankle over my left knee and squat with 1 foot instead of 2, holding for 3 seconds in the squat position (keeping a 90 degree at the knee). Wow its hard! Getting through 10 of those per leg is pretty hard but feels great.

I'll have firm buns in no time. :D

(Stupid 181...)
