Hello everyone. I am new here and I thought I'd introduce myself and tell you a little a bit me and invite you to join me on my journey to wellness. I am one of those girls who people say 'she'd be hot if she was thinner'. Well, I think I am hot right now. The reason I need to lose weight is for health reasons, not vanity (although it would be nice to fit into smaller, cooler clothes - they just don't make them nice for big girls).

A few week ago I started to feel really tired, thirsty and had to pee a lot. I also noticed that my hands and feet would tingle a lot. So I went to the doctor. She thought I might have diabetes. I got tested and it was found that I have prediabetes. So, I am now motivated to lose weight because they say you can avoide full blown diabetes by losing weight and eating right. I should also tell you that I have high blood pressure, high cholesterol, a strong family history of diabetes, and i'm shaped like an apple (a cute apple that is). So I started taking blood pressure meds, cut most of the sugar out of my diet and have decreased my fats. I also now only drink water (occasionally I will have 1% milk). So in essence, I have been scared into weightloss.

I am 5 ft 2, with a medium frame. I will never be tiny like Nicole Richie. I have always been curvy, with a large chest. At the start of my journey I weighed 192. I now weigh 183.

I have also started exercising at my local rec centre and let me tell you, I just love it. I have a feeling I will be there almost everyday. I feel great when I am doing it and I know that this could prevent me from getting diabetes (along with the eating).

So welcome abroad and enjoy the ride, I know I will

Feeling a bit sore

I am feeling a bit sore today and this means I am in the danger zone. Should I go to the gym tonight? I tend to quit exercising when I feel pain so I never get past that stage. This time however, I will succeed. I have to. I think I will set up an appointment with a personal trainer so that they can give me a workout routine. Right now I am just winging it, trying to build up my endurance slowly. Although I guess if I am hurting a bit I must have overdone it a little. Oh well, nothing 15 minutes in the hot tub won't cure. I want to lose 50 pounds in 6 months so I guess I am gonna be sore for awhile. I plan on going to the gym 5 days a week for 45-60 minutes and taking my dog for a walk 4 days a week for 45 minutes. If I don't lose weight with this, I don't know how I will. I have also cut out most sugar from my diet (except for the natural kind found in fruits and veggies), drink only water now except for the occasional glass of 1% milk and eat 5 small meals a day. So please wish me luck and I'll get you posted.

Hi Nicole,
Welcome to your diary and to the WLF!
Congratulations on the 9 pounds lost so far :D

You'd lose 50 lbs in 6 months if you lost around 2lbs a week, but most people on this forum and anywhere wouldn't recommend you lose that much or any more than that cause once you're there, you might change your eating habits to being more of a free-eater, and then gain it back again. 50 lbs in around 9 months would be realistic and that way you'd keep it off. Just an opinion though. You'll do great anyway! Keep up the good work.

Good luck, and welcome! :D

Thanks

Thanks for your advice. I will keep it in mind.

So I went to the gym last night and did 40 minutes of cardio (20 stairmaster, 10 eliptical, 10 rowing machine) and 20 minutes working on my arms, shoulders and chest and I feel ok. A little sore but not too bad. I plan to go back tonight and do another 40 minutes of cardio and 20 minutes on my lower half. With 5 days a week I should see some results in a few weeks. Everyone who I tell how much I weigh is usually shocked. They say I can't possibly weigh that much. I seem to carry most of my weight in my belly. So it's not uncommon for people to ask me when I am due. That ticks me off. I've heard people say that I would be hot if I lost 40 pounds. Well, if I do lose 40 pounds, I still wouldn't be interested in you, so there.

In a few weeks my goal is to start jogging on the treadmill. I've done it a few times but only for a few minutes. I didn't want to overdue it. I will be able to burn more calories that way.

Sometimes it's intimidating going to the gym because of all the beautiful skinny girls. But it's ok, they motivate me. I want to look like that. I want to be healthy and hot.

Back from the gym

Okay, so I decided that I am going to start detailing what excerise I do as well as what I eat in a day so that I can see the progression.

Exercise

20 minutes on treadmill (worked up to 4 mph)
10 Minutes on elipitical
10 minutes on bike
20 minutes working on various machines for legs, abs, and back

Food

Breakfast:
1 piece of toast (enriched white)
1 teaspoon peanut butter
1 medium banana

Snack:
14 baby carrots

Lunch:
Veggie delight wrap from Subway (cheese, lettuce, tomato, onions, black olives, cucumbers, pickles, green peppers, mustard, zesty italian sauce)
9 Kashi honey sesame crackers

Dinner:
5 buffalo wings
small side of ceaser salad
celery, brocoli, carrots, tomatoes, peppers
whole grain dinner roll

Snack:
6 strawberries

Beverages:
8 glasses of water (give or take)

That seems like a lot of food to me. I used to only eat lunch, dinner and maybe a snack in the evening and I never used to drink water. I did a rough calculation and it's approximatley 1600 calories. Is that enough if I am exercising 5 days a week? I know I am still a bit hungry so i'll just drink more water.

Bye for now

Another day done and I survived. It was treat day too which was very nice. I had a square of suger free chocolate from Purdy's (very yummy) and only 70 calories. I now avoid sugar that isn't natural because of my prediabetes. It's no fun but then again, neither is diabetes.

I'm havin one of those days. Stressed out about my health which makes me want to eat. Besides finding out a few weeks ago that I am prediabetic, I also found out that my blood count is abnormal. 4 blood tests showed that I have a high white blood count, high platelet count, and smaller than normal red blood cells. So now I have been referred to a hematologist, a doctor who deals with blood disorders and blood cancers. I really hope it is nothing but I won't know until July because the medical system in Canada is very slow. Any way, for my daily stats.

wow youre doing so well :)
your food is really healthy and youre sticking on track religiously with the diet and exercise. i hope you see some results in your weigh in - you deserve to. xx

Another good day. Did ten extra minutes of cardio. Wanted to hit the 5 mile mark (or 9.6 kilometers) so pushed for it. Was proud of myself on the treadmill. Did two minutes of walking, followed by one minute of running , etc. I kept it up for twenty minutes. It's hard to run when you are chubby let me tell you. Another funny thing. Some of the machines measure by mile and some by kilometer so I thought I was on a kilometer one so I put the treadmill speed up to 5.2 and nearly flew off. It turns out 5.2 mph (8.36 kilometers) is faster than 5.2 kilometers per hour (or 3.2 miles per hour). Apparently that was too fast for me to just walk. I will keep an eye out for that next time.

Exercise
20 minutes on treadmill
20 minutes elliptical
10 minutes recumbant

Food

Breakfast:
2/3 cup of shreddies
1 banana
1 piece of whole grain toast with margerine

Snack:
10 snap peas

1 1/2 cups of spinach salad (spinach, strawberries, almonds, feta, balsamic vinegrette)
1 mango vanilla yogurt
1 small orange

Dinner:
Chicken bacon ranch wrap from subway

Snack:
1 no sugar added popsicle
1 square of chocolate

Got a lot of exercise in today. Walked from work to do errands (about 15-20 minutes) and then went to the gym. Had a good food day too. I upped the resistence on the elliptical to 5 (out of 25). During the last 5 minutes I cranked it to 7. Not to shabby. I tried running on the treadmill again but I was wearing stupid pants (i.e., have no draw string so therefore I have to keep pulling them up - I hate that). Oh well, next time I will wear draw string pants.

Exercise
20 minutes treadmill, 4 mph alternating between 0% incline and 1% incline
20 minutes elliptical, 15 minutes at 5, 5 minutes at 7.
9 minutes recumbant bike (wanted to make it an even 4 miles today)
15-20 minutes of walking to do errands, etc.

Food

Breakfast:
2 eggs scrambled (with the yolk - I will say good bye eventually)
2 pieces of multigrain toast with margerine
1 orange

Snack:
12 snap peas

Lunch:
1 cup o' chicken noodle soup
Half of a strawberry spinach salad
1 granny smith apple

Dinner:
1 hamburger on whole grain roll
Side salad

Snack:
1 no sugar added chocolate piece
10 cashews

Beverages:
Water
