Starting October 25th, 2006 I decided to change my eating habits in order to lose weight. Some things that I am changing are: switching to crystal light instead of koolaid. It is 5 calories per 8 oz. glass instead of 200! Cutting down on calories and trying to eat more health conscious snacks and limit the portion of unhealthy snacks that I do eat. I can't do anything too drastic or I will not stick to the diet, so I have to be able to eat my snacks, lol. I would like to lose 20-25 lbs, which would put me at 125-130 lbs. This is what I believe would be a healthy weight for myself. I hope to lose a lb a week. I am a mother of a 3 month old baby girl and after the delivery I had many complications, keeping me in the hospital for 3 weeks. Because of being a mother to an infant and still recovering from these complications, I don't have the time or energy to exercise. I wish to lose this weight through diet only, so it may be a long, hard process. I do have one thing on my side though and that is that I am breastfeeding my baby. A breastfeeding mother who is dieting should eat between 1500-1800 calories a day and sometimes more. I am trying to stick to around 1600 calories a day, I will probably cut down to 1500 if my milk supply stays good. Because my baby is not old enough to eat any other foods, yet she is old enough to take in a lot of milk, about 500 of my calories are going towards breastfeeding. I will post what I ate on here almost every night and how the weight loss experience is going, starting tonight. Wish me luck!

Well Hi there...good to see you out here! ;)

Breastfeeding really helped me after I had my daughter, I didn't diet at all just breastfeed her and the pounds fell off...granted she was a vigorous eater...ok, GREEDY! :p Sounds like you've really thought it through and have a plan so you're one step ahead of the game already!

As far as snacks, how do you feel about fruits and veggies? I am a reformed "snacker" of sorts, but now I munch on strawberries, celery, grapes, broccoli, etc. And I recently found out that they are catabolics...meaning it takes more energy for the body to break them down than their caloric value...so it's like a mini workout, they have negative calorie value. Basically, the more you eat of them the more energy your body burns! Its a win-win situation you get a yummy snack and it helps your body burn extra cals off. Here's some info Mal posted on it. I would in NO WAY recommend this as being ALL you eat and I know you'd never do that anyway..but I had to say it. :)

At any rate, best of luck to you girlie. I know you're going to reach your goal and we're all here to help cheer you on. BTW the little one is beautiful!

first post!

Today was the 3rd day of my diet! It went pretty good. I feel like I still get to eat quite a bit, I am pretty much just cutting out the boredom eating that I tend to do and the approximately 1,000  calories a day that I used to get from drinking sugary drinks. My husband forgets I'm on a diet and tempts me every once in a while, but he's been doing pretty good altogether. I just can't wait to shed these pounds. The weight that I am aiming for (125), I haven't been at since 8th grade! But I really want to be healthy and look good and I think I'm going to stick to it this time! Well, here's what I ate today. There are no veggies there because I can't eat things with vitamin K in them because I'm on coumadin and there are no fruits because I ran out of grapes last night and didn't get to the store today, but I stayed at my limit none the less.

Breakfast:
peanut butter and chocolate chip chewy granola bar (100)

mid-morning snack:
23 Mike n' Ikes (140)

lunch:
1 cup spaghetti, 1/4 cup meat sauce and garlic cheese biscuit (410)

mid-afternoon snack:
29 cheez-its (130)

dinner:
1 1/2 cups linguini chicken alfredo and garlic toast (660)

evening snack:
low fat smartpop popcorn (120)

Beverages: 8- 8 oz. glasses of Crystal light (40)

Altogether 1600 calories! - 500 of the healthiest ones going to the baby of course, lol. :p

Sounds good...except for the Mike 'n Ikes. :p :p

Boredom eating used to really get me in trouble too, that and when I get upset, I tend to run to chocolate...which in turn runs to my thighs. *sigh* :p But I am reformed...well, almost. It is a process, so I have my bad days...but the good days outweigh the bad ones and I trudge on. :)

You're doing a great thing not just for yourself, but for your little one. As you learn more about healthy eating you'll be setting a good example for her and she'll learn from that. My 7 yr old daughter reads labels all the time. Its quite funny. We were just in WalMart and I soooooo wanted the Chips Ahoy and I flipped it over to read the package and she said, 140 cal in 2 cookies? Mommy that's too much!" :p :p So she drags me down to the 100 cal snack section, from which I was forced to select my chocolate snack. :p :p I'm glad that I've helped her to understand the importance of healthy living and that we can still have the things that we like, but we have to be sensible about it. So...I'm sitting here eating my 100 cal Hershey's snacksters and I must say it was a good choice! :D

this isn't as hard as I thought

Ohappy, thank you so much for the encouragment. I'm really hoping to get these pounds off without exercise, but I don't know if I can do it, I might have to join some kind of exercise class. I was going to aerobics class 2 nights a week, but then I had 2 ingrown toenails surgically removed and 4 wisdom teeth removed. It hurt to wear shoes for weeks, but I'm starting to feel better. I read in your diary that you went to curves and got hooked, what is it like? Maybe I'll consider going. What times are they open until? how much does it usually cost? Thanks in advance )

Well, Diary, today went great, I think. It's not very hard to stay below my calorie limit, in fact it's hard to eat that much! Today I did not even eat as many calories as I'm supposed to be eating. Im going to blame that on the fact that I slept in and didn't eat breakfast or a morning snack. By the time I had fed the baby, taken a shower, and got myself ready to go it was already noon so I skipped straight to lunch. It's a lot easier to eat less on the weekends though, because my husband is here to keep me company and I don't get bored as often. On the weekdays however, that stretch from lunch until dinner seems like forever. I probably used to consume tons of calories just in that time period. Now that I have this forum, I just jump on here when I get bored, instead of eating.

Well, here's what I ate today!

Lunch:
Turkey and hearty vegetables dinner from Hormel (200)
and 29 cheez-its (130)

Afternoon snack:
grapes (90)

Dinner:
2 chicken gorditas (760)

Evening snack:
2 rice cakes (100)

Beverages: 8- 8 oz. glasses of crystal light (40)

That's 1320 calories, not enough to sustain the breasfteeding so I'll probably have some grapes before bed, adding another 180 calories to the mix and evening out to 1500, the lowest reccomended calorie intake for breastfeeding women who are trying to lose weight.

Wish me luck tomorrow, It's a weekday, which means I have lots of time alone, and susequently I may have the tempations to boredom eat.

Looking good, looking good..no more Mike 'n Ikes in the menu I see. :p

As for Curves, my local one is FANTASTIC! The owner and the trainers are so upbeat and fun, they always have games and/or contests going on, something up on the walls to encourage us, the music is upbeat and is varied. I feel really comfortable in that there are no men looking at me while I workout. I've meet some wonderful women in my community there and its so great when we run into each other places...you'd think we hadn't seen each other in ages! lol

You rotate from one hydraulic machine to a cardio pad. Each machine works a different muscle group and you can push yourself as hard as you want or as light...the machine adjusts its pressure/weight according to how hard you push. On the cardio pads, you can do some jump n jacks, arm circles, jogging, walk in place...whatever you want. Some places, like mine, write different exercises on each one...just to give you an idea of things you can do.

For me, I get an educator discount...the application fee was waived and I pay $29/mo. The great thing about Curves is that they are ALWAYS running some type of special....1 or 2 weeks free, 1 month free and with it they will sometimes give you a free measurement and body fat calculation, which if you join is updated every month (or whatever timeline you decide on).

But you don't have to join a gym to exercise...you can do things at home. Put that little bundle of joy in the stroller and go for a nice, brisk walk during the day. If you have FitTV, which I'm addicted to btw (lol) they have a variety of work out shows, pick the one (s) you're most comfortable with and let that be your cardio. You can use laundry detergent/fabric softner bottles as light weights...even gallon water bottles. You don't have to spend a lot of money to work out...and to be honest with you, you'll likely need to incorporate some type of exercise into your regimen at some time. As you loose weight you want to make sure its fat and not muscle so some exercise would be helpful. Also muscle burns extra calories/fat right by itself, so some light strength training (remember those fabric softner and water bottles) can really help you out here...also the dreaded squats and lunges. They bite, but they make ya look realllll good in the end girlfriend! :)

I won't overload you too much, just wanted you to know that you have a lot of free resources. Walking is FANTASTIC and doesn't cost you a thing and your little one will enjoy it as well. Bundle her up real tight and when she gets tired of looking around, all that rocking of the stroller will have her sleeping like a...well, a baby! :p :p

Keep up the great work girlie! :)

Just thought of something...sugar free gum, Orbit is my favorite, REALLY helps me with the boredom eating. I actually read a study the other day that supported the fact that strong mint gum curbs munching. I swear by it, don't know why I didn't think to mention it before, but give it a try and let me know if it helps you. :)

Ok..I realize it seems like I'm stalking you, but...:p :p :p

I just had another great and fun idea to share with you re: exercising.

DANCING...it's a great work out and it's so much fun. Turn up your favorite tune and dance like mad all over the room. You'll have fun, your heart rate will be up, calories will be burned and your daughter will giggle like mad at you! You can sway her little legs and arms with you, make funny faces, the whole nine.

I read an article once about using your kids and pets in your workout...lifting them and twirling them and stuff. I'll see if I can remember where I read that.

Ok, I'll leave you alone...for now! :p

Rough night- fell of the wagon

Lol, it's ok Daye, I only think you're a little weird now:p But really, thank you for all the suggestions and information. Tonight I bought the Exercise video A New Dimension by Cindy Crawford. It's a post natal workout so I'm hoping it will target all of those area affected by the pregrancy. It's a good start anyway, I'll probably start by doing it 3x a week, you were right about not wanting to lose muscle, I lost enough of that laying a hospital bed for three weeks, no more!!! :p

Well, last night sucked, We had my baby in the E.R. because she was having tremors in her left leg. The doctors referred us to a pediatric neurologist at the University Of Michigan hospital. The soonest they can get us in is 3 weeks. Chances are good that it was nothing, but they want to make sure. Anyway, We didn't get out of the hospital until 1:30 A.M and we were both starving so we swung by Taco Bell and I got a taco bringing my total calories to I don't know what.

Well, today has gone pretty good as far as food goes. Here's my menu:

Breakfast: granola bar (100)

snack: 30 grapes (90)

Lunch: gordita (460)

snack: 29 cheez-its (29)

Dinner: Homemade cheeseburger (540) and 1/2 package easy mac (115)

snack: 3 rice cakes (150)

Beverages: 8 - 8 oz. glasses Crystal light (40)

Altogether 1524 calories. I'd say I did pretty well. Peace out!

Oh my! I do hope the little one is alright, you all are in my prayers. Sounds like you did great today! Let me know how you like that Cindy Crawford video. :)

OHD, For sure I'll let you know how that tape is, I'm really hoping it's not dumb. I bought the pilates for pregnancy video and it was so slow and easy that I couldn't do it because it was so boring.

Well, diary, today was a day where I really struggled with wanting to snack. It's that time from when my husband leaves after his lunch break at 12:45 until he gets home at 5 that really gets me. That's when I boredom eat. But I did good for the day. I really hope that I can stick to this and the binge eater inside doesn't get the best of me. It's times like this where I want to quit and say I'd rather be fat and happy than thin and going without my beloved snacking. But I know in the end, when I get down to my goal weight I will be so proud of myself and so confident in my body that it will be worth it and I'll want to keep it up. I just have to get to that point. Anyway, here's what I had to eat today:

Breakfast: Granola bar (100)

Morning snack: grapes (90)

Lunch: Turkey and hearty vegetables dinner and 29 cheez-its (330)

Afternoon snack: small bowl of cereal with skim milk (200)

Dinner: bacon, egg, and cheese on a bagel w/ hashbrowns (homemade) (612)

Evening snack: 3 rice cakes (150)

Beverages: 8- 8 oz. glasses of crystal light (40)
8 oz. glass of orange juice (110)

Total being 1632 calories. Pretty good for it being a rough day. I can't wait until that video gets here, I want to start getting rid of this flabby belly from the pregnancy. I hate it because even though my tummy is flat when I stand up, because there's not muscle tone it is ALL OVER when I sit down. Not attractive to say the least. I want to be able to wear a fitted shirt and look good while sitting down. Well, see you later :)

No talk of giving up allowed...sorry! :) Girl you've done sooo well, look at that ticker! Don't even think of giving up.
It's times like this where I want to quit and say I'd rather be fat and happy than thin and going without my beloved snacking.

But would you REALLY be happy...no you wouldn't. You're not doing this just for you and a fitted shirt, you're doing this so that when your little one is older she'll have a healthy mom that can run around outside with her and show her how to be healthy young girl and woman.

Don't feel like you can't treat yourself sometime, with a small snack. Some people even have a planned cheat day. When you deprive yourself losing weight becomes a chore. You want to make better choices not punish yourself.

Keep your head up, you're doing great and you WILL meet your goal.

Sorry to hear the pilates was boring, I hope Cindy is more fun. Can't wait to hear about it. Hope today is great.

I was thinking since you get bored after he leaves, how about planning some activities to fill that time. A walk with the little one, your video tape, something to keep you busier during that time of day...giving you less time to think about munching. Just a thought. Talk to ya later. :)

lol, OHD, I guess you're right, I wouldn't be happy. Or I would be until the next time I looked in a mirror or the next time I pulled my shirt up to nurse my daughter and saw my stomach hanging over my pants (gosh I hate that). Thanks for the thoughts on how to avoid munching. I'll try them. It would probably be easier if lived closer to my family, then I could go visit with people. because I'm 2.5 hours away from and friends or relatives though, I get no interaction except for with my husband. Guess I'll just have to find other things to do with my time. Can't wait for that exercise video.

So, Diary, today has been very good. I didn't have any problem at all sticking to my plan and I weighed myself today for my weekly weigh-in and had lost 1.5 lbs. Yay! I'm not going to put it on my ticker yet though. Not until it has been gone for another week, then I'll get brave and move the little guy. :p So I guess that was incentive to keep on with the plan. If keep losing 1.5 lbs a week then I'll be 12 lbs lighter by christmas! I'll just have to try really hard not to overeat on the holidays, which I tend to do. Anyway, that's a long way off and if I don't lose that much by then I wont worry too much, just keep on truckin'! Well, here's what I had for the day:

Breakfast: granola bar (100)

Snack: 30 grapes (90)

lunch: 5 fishsticks 1/2 cup mac and cheese, 2 tbs tartar sauce (360)

Snack: 58 cheez-its (260)

Dinner: 8 oz.chicken breast,1 cup greenbeans,3/4 cup AuGratin potatoes(585)

snack: smartpop popcorn (120)

Beverages: 8- 8oz. glasses of Crystal light (40)

Total: 1555 calories. :D

Well, See ya tomorrow!

Congrats on your progress!

And a belated well-wish regarding the birth of your child ;)

Keep it up, thanks for commenting in my diary.

You're doing great!!! I read that you plan out your menu ahead of time since you're calorie counting, just tell yourself if it's not on your menu for the day, don't allow yourself to have it, that might keep you from overeating when you get bored :)

Congrats! A new baby! You are very brave trying to lose weight now! I'm an admirer! LOL My youngest is 4 1/2 and now I'm losing weight, cause he's in school this year. If cook all day for some one I can't count calories! So good for you!! Claps hands!!!:)
