Hi there...I read some of the posts today and I can actually say, I think I'm going to fit in nicely. We're all here for the same reason, to lose weight...but more importantly to become healthy! Here's my story...

I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism about 4 years ago, after they discovered a growth on my pitutary gland. (It was benign and treated with radiation and a ton of strong medications that added a ton of weight). I have lost weight with WW and am going to start at it again, only I didn't want to head back to the meetings weighing more then I did when I initially joined this time last year...so I did a search on line and here I am.

I also have been smoke free for over one year now...smoked for 10+ years...gained weight with that...and now my hubby and I want to start a family, but want to lose weight first and be healthy before we bring a child into the mix of things. So I went on the scale today...and I am currently at the heaviest I have EVER been...I can feel it in my knees and feet when I walk...so its now or never, I will do this...with your help it will happen. So let the journey begin!

If anyone can show me the ropes here, or want to buddy up, and be firm but fair and tough but fair with me (and visa versa) PLEASE let me know...I am aiming for at least 20 lbs before Christmas, which is only 2.5 lbs a week...I can do that!!

Thanks, VG

Welcome to the WLF. :) You may want to read the stickied threads to learn a bit more about nutrition/ fitness. Also, you can log in your foods for free at or If at any time you have questions, don't be afraid to ask. There are always people out there willing to give you fantastic advice. Oh and another, you may want to start yourself a food journal. It will give other member's a chance to learn a bit more about yourself, figure out what type of eating/ exercise plan you'll be following, and most importantly, giving you motivation and support. (vice versa) Good luck with your weight loss journey. :D

Hi Valleygal, I'm also new here (a few days ago). Like you, I also suffer with hypothyroidism. Look forward to seeing you about on the boards and best of luck with your journey!

Greetings.

My name is Michael. I was a personal trainer for Gold's Gym and for World Health Club in Canada for 4 years. I no longer work as a personal trainer...so i can't walk you step by step. However, I'm more than willing to give you the exact same routines/programs/advice I gave my clients who paid a reasonable amount per hour to get...I just can't give you the day by day motivation.

However, in terms of exercise efficacy (effectiveness), it will be exactly the same. If you are interested, just give me a shout or express interest on this thread.

Thanks for joining!

Michael

Hi Michael...still new to the site...but I am TOTALLY up for the challenge. I'm ready...willing and able!! (Still learning the navigations of this site, so bear with me...joined yesterday, but I'm game!!) TTYL

Welcome welcome to the wlf... i love this place. :D

Hey Micheal... just out of interest... can you hand the advice to me too? pwease? *innocent look* :)

Hmmm...I just learned that I cannot send a PM until I have 5 posts or more, so I am just posting just to post?? LOL

But seriously...Lexia...I am always researching ways in which to try and be successful in my weight loss...but its so hard. My doctor told me having hypothyroidism and trying to lose weight is like this...the average person can lose 2.5 lbs/wk if following a plan and working out etc...however, for us, it would/could take about 2 weeks...so that's a negative force, its hard enough to find the will power and be dedicated, but when it requires that much more effort...on your worst days, its hard to stick with it!! That's why I came here...
Lexia, How are you doing? What are you doing to lose weight? Your ticker indicates your doing extremely well...when were you diagnosed?? What type of medication are you taking? Dose? Can you tell me any new information?? Thanks VG :eh:

Hey Valleygal! Sorry, I've only just seen this.

I was diagnosed in July last year. This was after months and months of weight gain/depression and the biggest symptom for me - lethargy. Ugh. I started on levothyroxine 100mcg and have increased that twice so it's now at 175mcg. Just a point of interest, my blood tests came back as 'within normal range' after each dosage. BUT I still didn't feel 'myself', y'know, so... I increased my own medication THEN went to the docs and told them. They then officially upped the prescription. There does seem to be quite a lot of leeway regarding ranges. And obviously my doc was happy to leave me at the low end of normal. I was not.

I think that my medication is just right for me at the mo, and I'm losing weight 'like a normal person' :rotflmao: so don't be discouraged! I've taken to going swimming 3x weekly, hoping to incorporate weights at some point (when I can get some!) and I'm counting calories. The food bit is quite easy actually, I've put myself on 1,700 per day... but end up in bed at night with a sandwich and a couple of yogurts, just to make up my needed calories!

It's the 'waiting' that's shite! But even if you lose only a pound a week, hey, that's a pound a week gone!

Feel free to PM me if you would like to have a natter/let off steam!

best o' luck

Sorry, but I don't really know where to post this question. Unfortunately it wasn't possible for me to start own threads. Anybody out there who could tell me how th works? Thanks!

Jane I'm replying here, just to make sure you see this.

My apologies Valleygirl.

Jane : Look near the top of this page on the left hand side. It says Weight Loss Forum > General > Newcomers. Click on one of those words to start navigating between the different sections. When you get to the section you want to post in you'll get a list of all the threads in the section and at the top of the list on the left there'll be an orange box with the words "New Thread", in it. If you click on that you can get started with a thread of your own.

Valleygirl. I so remember the thought of "I'm the heaviest I've ever been." I think I was most upset about it when I was actually about 15 pounds lighter than the heaviest I ever got!! Kudos to you for getting going now. Stick with it. Whether it's 2.5 lb a week or not - just keep working at it. :)

A belated welcome, and best wishes with your weight loss. :)

Hey no worries about 'sharing my thread' LOL...we all have questions...I find it hectic on the sight, but I've met some great people so far...sorry I've been tardy in my responses its been a few hectic weeks..but I'm plugging along. Fell of the wagon, so to speak...my BFF flew out to see me for a week and well...we let loose...but we weren't terrible...had homecooked meals...stir-frys, kabbobs and then pizza...but I'm back at it again, will weigh in on Sat...as per the norm...How's everyone else doing?

I'm wondering where to start

Hi everyone. I'm a 17 year old female, and I'm just starting this. I'm wondering where to start... I need work on my diet and on excercise... For excercise, I can start excercising- I have a treadmill at home and Cindy Crawford video fitness tape, and a kickboxing tape. I want something that'll really work so that I don't get discouraged. Should I start off with alternating- one day treadmill and a one day a 45 min workout from the tape? Or should I reaquire membership to the gym I used to go to...? Or should I join a workout class at the gym or a dance class, cuz I like to dance? What do you suggest? If I excercise everyday and eat healthy, is a goal of 2 lb a week kind of reasonable?

Hi Veena...

Losing 1-2 lbs a week is a normal amount (and in the healthy range). Slow and Steady wins the race. When you first start your 'lifestyle' makeover, follow a food intake program...WRITE DOWN everything you eat...what time, where you eat it (table, by the computer, in from of TV etc-so you can see if you are not losing, some habits you may have to break) the amount you eat and if you felt satisfied with the meal etc. Increase your water intake to 8 8oz glasses of water a MUST. Keep other fluids to a downlow, caffine once a day (including diet pop--even though diet pop has no sugar (sweetner) it still contains a LOT of sodium (which will slow down weight loss) have milk and REAL OJ...cranberry JUICE (no kool-aide etc...it must be real fruit juice and one glass a day). I have been following Weight Watchers and I suffer from Hypothyroidism, so losing weight is a real struggle for me...but I take it day by day...meal by meal and sometimes food item by food item. Try to avoid anything WHITE..bread, sugar, salt, rice, pasta, potatoes (keep them to a min or try a healthier version of them). Eat lots of veggies and fruit...whole grains etc...but I would suggest writing everything down before you eat...and portion control..that's what I've been doing...

As far as exercise...even doing just 30min a day at first is a HUGE improvement, just getting active again. Alternate days...upper body and lower body...make sure you give your muscles time to heal and have at least 2 days off each week. You can go for a nice walk on your off days, but nothing too excessive. Work out at home, and if you want a change go to the gym, like you I need to keep it intersting, but time and work doesn't always allow that for me anyways...so that's why we just got a treadmill...so no more...I don't have time...now I get up 40 min earlier and run my little heart out...its not the gym or outside, but its still good for me!

Hope this helps...and remember, take it day by day...and try not to be to hard on yourself...(Now I just gotta keep telling myself all the stuff I just told you!!) LOL
