I'm a 25 year old female and 248 pounds at the moment. I have been obese all of my life (was born at 9 pounds 10 ounces). I've been exercising regularly for 4 years now, cardio 5 times a week and weight training 2-3 times a week. In the beginning all that happened was I gained muscle no fat loss. Then I decided to go low carb after understanding that I had PCOS and low-carb was the way to go. I lost 25 pounds that way, plateaued for a year and then slowly crept up 10 pounds to my current weight. Much of my weight is the result of binge eating. I've been controlling my binge eating lately, but still see the scale not budging. I'm at a loss for how to get out of this rut. I eat about 50% fat 30% carbs and 20% protein, but my weakness is sugary fatty foods (ice cream, cupcakes, cookies). I would love to decrease the fat and increase the protein, so any tips on how to do that sustainably would be appreciated. I count my calories using fitday.com and I wear a heart rate monitor to track my calories burned.
I'm a nutrition nut, so I know so much about what I should be doing, but just can't do it. I'm hoping this forum will help me figure out what I can do to restart the weight loss.

Hey, getting onto a site like this for motivation is a good start. You're going to have to change your diet if you want to drop the weight though. Noone else can do that for you. If you HAVE to have those foods you could still do them if you control portion size. Maybe reward yourself with a scoop of ice cream if you worked out that day and all the rest of your food was good.

One scoop of ice cream, are you kidding??

I agree with you completely. Like I said, I KNOW what I should and shouldn't eat. I know the math: calories in < calories out for weight loss. I can do it too, for a short period of time, but then I slip up. Maybe for some people one scoop of ice cream is possible, but for me it's the whole container or none at all. Even if I go to an ice cream shop and somehow exit with only one scoop, I will be going for something much bigger and much more calorie filled later on. I KNOW that I cannot eat any sugary foods at all if I intend to lose weight and maintain it, but I also know that as soon as I see a piece of cake I have to have it.
Are there any tricks you guys have come up with?

I used to eat massive ammounts of food every day. Would usually eat/drink approx 8000-10000 calories a day. Now I stick around the 2200-2400 area. I quit drinking soft drinks and stoped eating fried and fast food. For the first couple weeks it was tough, but you get used to it and your stomach shrinks. Now if I eat a big meal my stomach hurts, I can't finish dinner at most places because the serving sizes are so huge. I drink a lot of water, that is one of my keys to success. If I crave something I usually just substitute. Have a Lowfat yogurt with some whipped cream instead of ice cream. Baked sweet potato fries instead of deep fried french fries. Turkey bacon instead of regular bacon. There are a lot of good options out there. Unless you're ready to change your life though it won't work. I'm down 65lbs and I'll never go back!

I guess the thing is, if you're only willing to do the same thing you've ever done... you're only going to get the same results you've always gotten. The only problem I see with cutting out stuff completely forever is it usually ends up in a binge and you just go back to eating that stuff. I think it's better to re-train yourself on what is an acceptable portion size, and what is healthy for you. Use smaller plates to control portion sizes, drink more water, eat slower, these are all things that can help. I think the key to prolonged weight loss is educating yourself, not just eating X-way for X-months til you lose the weight you wanted to.

I have PCOS too - and I cut out bread, rice and pasta. My diet could never be classed as low carb though as I eat so much fruit and veg and quite a bit of cereal. I often end up with 60% to 70% carbs according to fitday.com and lose weight. I try to keep my fat intake under control - it was less than 10% yesterday. You may be able to control your fat if you ate more carbs. I find that reducing my carbs too much is inclined to make me want to binge.
