hey peoples im a bit of a fitness freak but recently changes what i was doing, i was doing a lot of running and cycling then got sick of being to skinny so started doin some weights at the gym with the goal of just putting on some weight and at least trying to get a chest on me, but now all i seem to have achieved is a lot of weight gain which alot is fat and am now unfit as i have neglected the cardio, ill be having a bit of a scout around the site for any info if anyone could point me in the right direction would be good, basically i love my running and cycling but dont want to be scrawny at the same time, is it possible to be aerobically fit but muscular aswell????

It is absolutely possible. You need to find a good full body routine and balance it out with your cardio. Also check out Crossfit. It can help with both at once and is fun!

You don't have to look like this:

There are lots of triathletes out there who can also put up respectable bench press numbers and don't look like they spent the last 4 years in a concentration camp. Just because you can run and cycle doesn't mean you have to be scrawny. It's just that muscle mass doesn't help you in those sports.

I think the issue is that you went too far the other way. If you're thin and you want to add mass, you have to be careful your adding lean muscle and not just fat as what may have happened to you.

The three bigggest things you need to do
1) cut back on the LONG cardio hours. I get the impression if you're a cycling 'freak' that you're at it for a long time. Athletes how train like that tend to have thinner/stingier muscularity.
This does not mean to stop it all together. Perhaps, a couple of days a week, turn those sessions into HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training). Sprinters, for example, have much better muscle tone that long distance runners.

2) Pack on the muscle - Get your fitness high at the gym instead of the pavement. adopt a routine that promotes pure muscle growth.

3) Diet - How you eat is extremely important whether you're trying to lose weight or gain size. In your case, you need to try and take in more calories than your expelling, but it needs to be he right foods. Just pigging out is going to leave a little extra in the midsection. Also, make sure you're getting enough protein to support the muscle growth.

Definitely not impossible to transform, look at michael phelps - he trains six hours a day and he's got a serious physique.

I love to run and ride too. When I train for a triathlon, I lose a lot of weight. I go from about 185 to 175. I haven't done a triathlon for awhile and am back up to 185. My favorite workout is bodyweight. I do many different kinds of push ups and pull ups, hand stand push ups (or just stand on your hands for as long as you can), dips, squats, and core exercises.

I also work out with a Kettlebell. Being that you like to get out and be active, this just might be the thing for you. I have never had such gains in my shoulders and legs as I have had with a Kettlebell. If you don't know, a Kettlebell is like a cannonball with a handle. There are lots of different exercises that hit every body part.

Good Luck!
