New to exercise - need advice

Just started a treadmill routine where I alternate running and walking for 30-45 mintues every day. Started this 5 days ago and also started keeping my caloric intake below 1200 a day. I'm eating fairly healthy foods, including grains, fruits, vegetables (nothing fried). I drink sweet tea every day but stay away from sodas. I'm wondering how long it will take to notice a difference in pants size or weight loss (if any). I'm 39 years old, 5' 0" and weigh 116 pounds. I work at a desk all day - typing. I wouldn't consider myself overweight necessarily, just over-fat/under-lean. I need desperately to work on problem areas, including hips, thighs, buttocks, stomach, love handles, and arm flab. I have steadily/slowly gained weight over the past year - I've gained 12 pounds and I seem to keep gaining. I am having to buy bigger pants almost every other month. I want to get back to my previous weight or pants size of 100-105 pounds or smaller pants size. Will my above routine get me there? Any help is appreciated!

You need to work on maintaining lean body mass, which treadmill isn't going to help you do.

I think you'd definitely benefit from an article that Steve posted for T-Nation (I believe) It's over in the "On Topic" section under a thread labeled "A MUST READ"

I think that will help you A LOT!!!!

Plus I think you might be under eating. Maybe 1200-1300 cals a day would be better depending on your output, you may need more.

A must read....

THAT was some article. Straightforward and to the point. I guess it's a good thing I've only "wasted" 1 week on treadmill work. I had actually planned to start weight training next week. I have an appointment with the gym's trainer and I'm hoping to get some good ideas as I am new to exercise - literally been exercising for 1 week out of my entire 39 years of life. How pathetic and lady is that behavior! I do want to look lean when I lose some weight.

I appreciate your taking the time to read my post and offer advice. Many thanks!!!
