Hello,

My name is Ryan. I am currently in my second year of university and so far, things have been looking down... academically anyway. So I've no idea how much I weight... exactly. I do know that it is well over 290 lbs possible around 320lbs. I have always told myself "I'm going to start eating healthy!" and for about a week I drink nothing but water, but I always revert back to drinking more soda than anyone should drink...ever. I've been doing a lot of soul searching, and I now I keep telling myself "I'm going to be twenty in six months, I'm fail school, I've never been in a relationship and I've little self confidence".

Well that's going to change. After my exams, I am dropping out of university. I'll be off for five months, and then in April I will be starting a new program in a new school. Graphic Design. Something people in my family have told me to do since day one. While I am off these next few months I plan to eat well and exercise as much as possible. I spend all my free time sitting around, when I could be moving doing something. When I start school I want to be as healthy as I possibly can be, I want to have gained the confidence I have lost because of how I conscious I am of how I look.

And this is where signing up to the forum comes in. I wanted a place to find people like me doing the same thing. I want to be able to communicate on progress and strategies. I also need to learn. I do not know anything about calories, or counting or protein % and fat %.

Ryan.

Hi, Ryan!

I'm new to the forum too, but I just wanted to say good luck with everything you have planned! It definitely helps to have a support system of people going through the same process of losing weight...that's why I joined as well!

Hi Ryan,

First of all, welcome to the forums! I'm sure you will find the kind of support that you're searching for here. Secondly, I can relate (a lot) to your situation. I went to college and dropped out after 3 semesters, I just wasn't ready to do it ... I didn't have the self-discipline to do it at the time. I had very little confidence in myself, and between graduating from high school and dropping out of college I had gained 50lbs. or more and left weighing 320lbs.

I'm about to be 25, and I've been away from that college environment for about 5 years, now. I still have regrets about not finishing, but I have a very happy life in general and I know that if I really wanted to get back to school, I could do it this time. I'm sure I will do it at some point, my goal is to get back to school before I turn 30.

Anyway, I wanted to let you know that if you ever want to talk to someone who has been there, I'm here.

As far as starting your weight-loss journey, I recommend taking the first couple of weeks kind of slow and easing yourself into an exercise routine and making small adjustments to your diet. The first week that I was here, my main objective was to stop drinking soda and drinking a lot more water, and I lost 3lbs. that first week. Small changes definitely make a difference. I would also recommend registering for a free account at fitday.com so you can log your food and activities and calculate your protein/carb/fat% easily. You can also track your weight and body measurements ... it's really a great site.

Best wishes to you on your journey!

Welcome!

Welcome to the forums Ryan!

Hi Ryan,

.....stop drinking soda and drinking a lot more water..

Great adivce Addie...probably the best thing I ever did was to quit pouring sugary drinks down my throat.

Weight loss has always been a mental battle and often it takes a lifestyle change to get the brain in the right place. I suspect your time off from school will be the lifestyle boost that works for you :)

Thanks for all the responses. I will sign up for fitday.com. And what you said Addie is the same way I feel. I felt I was rushed into go to school when I wasn't ready for what I was going to get. I'm not ready mentally to stay in school right now, I don't apply myself. I think that if these five months go well, before I start my new program, I will be much happier at my new school as well as outside of it.

Ditto! I need the support, can't go this alone since I am single and live alone, no family support. Ryan you CAN lose the weight, an amazing thing about the body is weight CAN be altered, gained or lost.

Where are you at in your college program? If first year, etc., consider online education at an accredited college, you could transfer credits after a year or two to another physical campus, etc. I actually teach all online now as a college prof, students love online. Would give you flexibility to exercise, etc, timewise.
