New research says breakfast is BAD for weightloss!

I just read an article in the New York Times that reported some scientific research that showed that the old weight-loss advice to "breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince, and dine like a pauper" is not helpful at all.

Here's a quote for you:
“Whenever someone comes to me for dietary advice and says, ‘I never eat breakfast,’ I say, ‘Keep doing what you’re doing,’ ” said the senior author, Dr. Volker Schusdziarra, a professor of internal medicine at the Technical University of Munich. “Eating breakfast is just added calories. You’ll never compensate for them at subsequent meals.”

you can read the whole thing

In my experience...it's true! My daily totals tend to stay the about same, whether I remember to eat my morning oatmeal or not..... In fact, if anything, I consume fewer calories on non-breakfast days....

What do you guys think?

Hmm...that's an interesting article. It seems to me that the article is not saying to not eat breakfast, but yet that eating a big breakfast doesn't stop you from ingesting more calories during the day....and that eating a smaller breakfast, is better for maintaining a more calorie balanced diet...

I could be misreading. I included the link to the actual article too...it's interesting. I'm a bit skeptical of their process of research- it seems that there are a lot of things that could be impacting their results, and they don't seem to go into the research that has demonstrated that breakfast improves the rate of your metabolism, or look at the exercising that people are doing concurrently with this program...additionally, they recruited people who contacted a clinic- these people could be wanting to actively improve their diet, thus lowering their daily intake...

Inneresting nonetheless!

well, i don't agree that you shouldn't eat breakfast...but I will say that on days I eat breakfast and days I don't...it doestn' seem to effect how much I eat at night.

I read the same article and mentioned it when someone was asking about the saying about eating like a king for breakfast etc.

The article is saying BIG breakfasts, not breakfast.

i always find i lose more weight if i have a small breakfast- i eat less during the day, i think a larger lunch or an early dinner seems to work best.

Yeah exactly... Also a typical breakfast consists of cereal, muffins and coffee... which is sugar sugar sugar in most cases.

Maybe it's better to eat no breakfast than a huge breakfast, but I know I do much better when I have a bowl of oatmeal. Maybe it is just a personal thing? I just know I cannot go without breakfast.

The problem is not the (big) breakfast, it is what people eat in the afternoon, evening and in some cases during the night. I eat plain oatmeal with skimmed milk for breakfast and that is not big calorie wise but it fill me up.

There is absolutely no need to take it that far and starve yourself just for the sake of a few extra calories, the weight will come off just make sure the breakfast is small and proper good breakfast and get your exercise in,no need to obsess about how little you can eat in a day,get the metabolism going with breakfast!

I think it goes back to what works best for you - if you find you do best eating breakfast... eat breakfast! If you find you're fine skipping breakfast... skip it! Don't eat or not eat breakfast because someone tells you that you should, figure out what works for you personally, and not someone else.

Exactly.

There really isn't a right way or wrong way to do things when it comes to weight loss. Yes, there are certain things that you SHOULDN'T do, but there are no universal guidelines that apply to everybody. What works for me might not work for someone else and vice versa.

Personally, I don't like eating breakfast. It upsets my stomach and makes me feel sluggish all day. So, for me, eating breakfast isn't really a benefit. But, for other people, it might be exactly what they need.

Oh wow -interesting- I love breakfast.
i never thoght it influenced my diet at all. A few toasts with juice/tea. & i m happy.
For me the dinner is the most important - when it comes to dieting.
if i had a big dinner...thats it...i defo wont lose weight. i have to eat somethig light before 7 - so i can keep the weight dropping off me.

I've heard that you can use just hot water or maybe hot water with lime or lemon to stimulate the metabolism in the morning and get it kickstarted and that will help you lose more? I've also heard the Breakfast like a King thing too... I dont do either - I trying a low carb shake with rasberries or some type of fruit in it just to keep me going til lunch... probably not the best thing to have but its liquid and fills me up! :Angel_anim:

Do you have any science or studies about the hot water and lemon? Also define 'cleanse' because it actually is the same detox myth that has be debunked over and over.

hey Jericho.
I learnt it from a qualified nutrionist & it seems to be working for me despite of the lack of scientific proof.
I also researched it online - and looked for feedback from people. (i read an awful lot of literature about nutrition :) such a geek)
Cleanses: kidney & liver - as per my findings & the nutritionist.

its my personal opinion and experience. So to me its not a myth.

Thanks Justina! I may try having that before my shake or porridge!

Lemon and lime - although supposedly acidic are actually alkaline to the stomach so that may have something to do with it being beneficial to the digestion...

I know that when I was on holiday in Egypt and got gellybelly they gave me slices of lime to put with hot water to settle my stomach and that worked at treat!

When people say it works with no medical proof, that tells me it is in your mind..and that is fine but don't say that it speeds up your metabolism when it doesn't.

And this cleansing? really? Incorrect. It never touches the liver. The liver doesn't filter food or water, it filters blood. Hot water never touches the liver and lemon doesn't touch the liver.

Sorry, but I have a BIG problem with people promoting false claims like detox and cleansing. The mind can make you think something works because you want it to work..even when there is absolutely no science for it. It's worse when the science proves against it.

Well see that is different. That's not speeding up your metabolism or digestion, that is for an upset stomach. We aren't talking 'cleansing' 'detox' or any of that crap.
