New quick advice

me sister in-law asked me what is a good setting for a beginner on the Elliptical trainer I never used one, so I have no advice to give her, so I figured I would ask the trusty board here. So what is a good starting point? She is just starting to work out and is a bit overweight. Thanks in advance

All elliptical trainers are different. I would just say to start with the lowest level until you can do it for 30 minutes or so and then increase.

has she already got one?

If not then for the money it would cost she'd be better off buying some books on fitness, nutrition, good walking/running shoes, yoga mat and DVD and spend the rest on buying healthy foods. You really dont need expensive equipment to be fit and healthy.

If she has then interval training would be best.
5mins slow
1min faster
5mins slow
1min faster
etc...

Tell her not to worry about the resistance, keep it on a low setting so your moving your body faster to keep up with the machine.
When you set the resistance high, you will go slower.

Good advice above. I'd tell her to pick up some free weights and start varying her cardio intensity. She should start out doing a level that is comfortable for her. She shouldn't be falling over in agony, but it shouldn't be a stroll in the park either.
