You are me, 5 years ago! (same amount of kids and same weight)

You are with friends now who can help! read a few of the Newcomer threads to inform yourself of facts/myths and what works, then set yourself up a diary thread so others can follow you and you them :)

Thank you for replying it feels good that others are or have been in the same situation as myself, support is so much needed, I would like to learn more about foods and exorcises that may increase my metabolism

Welcome to the forum :) If you are after a strong support network I'd suggest making a diary in the diary section of the forum! You can meet lots of like-minded people round those parts :D

You definitely came to the right place for support! I agree with what the others have already posted above, reading through some of the forum posts and starting a weight loss diary will set you on the right track!

As far as portion sizes go, this handout is sometimes helpful:

For exercises, you can look here for some ideas and instruction:

Free Exercises, Exercise Instructions, Custom Workout, Personalized Workout, Ab Exercises, Abdominal Exercises, Training Programs

Start off slow, maybe with 3-4 exercises that seem manageable, work on those 2-3 days per week, then gradually add more exercises onto your 'routine.' Doing these strength exercises that build up your lean muscle tissue will help to increase your overall metabolism.

It is still important to do aerobic activity ('cardio') as well for weight loss & health. This includes things like walking, swimming (or water walking), etc.

Just remember to start slow and that you CAN do it!

you can do it!!

Make up your mind to do it and there is no stopping you. Take it one day at a time on a journey to getting healthier! Eat all fresh foods, no processed, junk food and watch white carbs. And start exercising! Start small - walk just 10 minutes to start with. That is what I have done and I have lost 86 pounds since 11/09. Once you make up your mind to be healthier and happier - you will do it! Good luck!

Thank you, I have one question, as far as the processed foods, i usually buy the lean cuisine meals are they even worse? And i have left the red meat alone and chicken, i am eating tofu and other organic meats, are those worse as well??

Hey Robin,

Your question about the lean cuisine meals is a good one... Basically, any food that isn't in it's original state (fresh or raw) is considered processed. I found this list of commonly bought processed foods that are generally considered less healthy than fresh foods:

-canned foods with lots of sodium
-white breads and pastas made with refined white flour, which are not as healthy as those made with whole grains
-packaged high-calorie snack foods, like chips and cheese snacks
-high-fat convenience foods, like cans of ravioli
-frozen fish sticks and frozen dinners
-packaged cakes and cookies
-boxed meal mixes
-sugary breakfast cereals
-processed meats (hot dogs, bologna, sausage, ham and other packaged lunch meats)

The reason that they are less healthy (and sometimes not helpful when it comes to weight loss) is that they are often loaded with the things that we all should be avoiding... like too much sugar, refined flour, tons of salt, chemicals, trans and saturated fats.... and the list goes on.

With that being said, your best bet would be to start reading labels and comparing products.... It can be very overwhelming, so what I do is just pick one thing per grocery trip that I'm really going to look at carefully, (for example, peanut butter) and compare a whole bunch of different brands and versions of the product ('low fat', 'low sodium'...). It takes a while, but eventually you can pick out the 'best' products for you.

It's always best to make food from scratch, but if you have to have some pre-packaged or processed foods, then maybe try to compromise and have a lean cuisine dinner, but make the rest of your meals that day from fresh ingredients... or some variation of that...

I think it's a good idea to limit the amount of red meat in your diet, I don't think it's necessary to never eat it, you just want to stick with the less fatty meats for the majority of meals... and no I don't think that organic is worse at all... probably better in fact (if you can afford it :))!

So once again I rambled a bit... just hoping it's helpful to you as well as others who might see the post!

Cheers,

P.

If in just starting out you're only able to work on the big picture (as opposed to narrowing in on more specifics like processed foods, what foods help speed up your metabolism, etc.) there's no shame in that. Hopefully you have support systems in your daily life (making Weight Loss Forums one of them is a great idea -- a very useful resource full of incredibly supportive people), and through that, you can start to reach your goals and learn as you go.

Best of luck to you; welcome to the boards :)

I have only been here a few days, and I have found that the people here are pretty nice and encouraging. You can do it! There is a lot of helpful tips and tricks on this forum, definitely important you go through the forum.
