New Here!

Hi all! I am new here, and so I haven't been able to set up my profile and signature completely but I am slowly but surely learning the ropes! A little about me, I am 25 yrs old and in the Air Force. When I left Basic Training I was 5'4 110lbs, at the time I didn't think I was small enough. Now that I've been in for 7 yrs I am still 5'4 but I weight 163lbs! My problem area is definitely my mid section. My entire life it seems that all the weight I gain goes to my stomach or bust. And from what i hear unfortunately the midsection is the hardest place to lose weight. :flame: I have only done the bare minimum required of me to get by in the military but now I am ready to make a change in my life. I am so glad I was able to find this forum so I can make friends and have the support I need to stay motivated!! I have been reading threads/posts and you all sound so wonderful, like this is a family. So I'd just like to say in advance, thank you for all that you do and I will do what I can to offer encouragement and support to everyone! Have a wonderful day!

Hi,
Glad you have joined. I started by just reading the forums as a guest, but I learned sooo much, I joined and now post questions as well. Everyone is so helpful, and I have picked up loads of tips. I thought I new what I was doing, but there is so much more that I have learnt. I now make small tweaks to my plan it it keeps me going.
Let us know how you are doing along the way, and you will get there.

Thanks for the well wishes! I know I have so much to learn, and I'm so glad everyone here is so willing to help!

Hi Lucy,

I'm another newbie :). I've been on a forum with a similar format, adoption.com. I haven't set up my profile or sig either, but that's mostly cuz I'm lazy.

Congrats on starting your weight loss journey!

Michelle

Lucyfan, welcome to WLF. How are you tracking your food intake? Let me run this by you. I am losing 4-7 pounds a month eating 20% below maintenance which lets me eat as much as possible and still lose. That way I can keep it up long enough to make a real difference in my weight. Calculate maintenance calories by multiplying your body weight in pounds x 15 calories. Eat 20% fewer calories and be HAPPY. As your weight drops pound by pound you adjust your intake. Remember, larger bodies take more fuel than smaller bodies so the numbers will seem high to you.

So 163 x 15 = 2445 calories to maintain (assumes you exercise 3x week)
-20% or 489 calories

= 1956 calories. Are you eating that much?

Congrats for getting in to better shape. You don't have too much to lose and could feasibly get there in a relatively short period of time.

lol... Lucy, i was in the Navy. I put on 40 pounds in 6 years while i was there.
Managed to lose those weight in less than a year and maintain it. It seems easier to lose weight after leaving Navy! Hahaha...
But I need to lose somemore to get to healthy BMI.

My problem is mid section too. I find that cardio helps alot. Esp jogging on incline treadmill.

Have a fun with this journey. It's challenging and exciting!

Notme- Thanks for the support! Good luck to you as well!

Happychubette- Wow, thanks for all that info! I had no idea there was something like that out there. I don't think I've been taking in that many calories unless they are bad! I did eat at the cheesecake factory last weekend before I started my new regimen. :)

Pinky- You were Navy? Yes a lot of people probably don't understand how you can be overweight and in the military but yes you can! They didn't reinstate the PT test until 3 yrs ago. I've been in for 7 now. So for 4 yrs all I had to do was the bike test...sheesh!

Glad you found the site! I'm like you & I'm sure a lot of us on here... the midsection is the biggest problem area for me.

This site has a lot of great people with some wonderful ideas for support or just to help keep you feeling like you should be doing something on those days where you just can't remember why you want to even do this.

Good luck with your loss!
