New here~ question??

Hey all
Im new to the board and am asking for some advice. I am 35 and have three children. The youngest is almost two. I have always been small and no problem with weight loss except for the first yr after giving birth to my little ones. Well, not sure what is going on but after my third baby Im stuggling with getting fit and its been almost two yrs. i do cardio about 4 x a week for 30-40 min and do moderate weights about 3X a week.I have tried to clean up my diet a bit and what has happened is I have actully gained weight??? I know its not muscle cause my clothes are tight. I do have hypothyroid but am on meds.Typical day may look like this:
A.m.~ soft boiled egg on 1 slice whole grain bread, coffee
snack~ 2% cottage cheese and maybe 6 almonds(sometimes I forget to eat snack)
lunch~ Turkey sandwich made with whole grain bread and mustard or salad w/ turkey and 1 hard boiled egg and low fat dressing OR lean cuisine meal 300 cal range.
snack~ sometimes a small baked potatoe with tsp parm cheese. Sometimes fruit w/some nuts. Sometimes no snack.
dinner~ varies greatly but try to keep to smalll portion . Usually grilled chicken, lean beef or pork with side of vegie and sometimes pasta or rice.
Oh~ Im 5'3 and typically weigh around 110 but am up to around 118 right now. Any suggestions as to what Im doing wrong. Im depressed :(

when did you find out about having hypothyroidism?? befire or after the last child and if before have you had any tests and had your meds adjusted after that??

You may need a change of some sort, change up your weight routine, or try HIIT or up the intensity on your cardio. Also may need to eat more, or different...5-6 equal size meals throughout the day. A serving of lean protein and complex carb at each. You need roughly 2,000 cals per day to maintain that weight, if your eating closer to 1,000 your bod may be in starvation mode.

I feel bad for you so i'll try to help. ;).
You should post your exact workout regimen. Then, I could really take a look.

Your diet looks decent. Here are your mistakes: You should eat more servings of fruits and vegetables, eat a larger breakfast, and have it more structured no maybes. You need to eat 5-6 meals a day.

Other notes:
Increase water intake, 8 glasses a day
If you get the point where your really hungry; you already lost. Plan your meals.
Calculate your calorie intake

Other than that Gl gEtTinG BuFf.

8 lbs isn't bad really. it is typical in hypothyroidism to have a slight increase in weight and some edema so that could be why you have a very slight increase in your weight. i htink that you can bring it back down what routine are you doing, as far as cardio and weights. maybe we can all offer some suggestions that may help.

i have an underactive thyroid, too, but with exercise & eating right, I am down to what I weighed after my first baby (he's 18 now).

i would also suggest more salad and fruit and moving more.

i'm also 5 3 and went from 138 to 113. i was 102 after high school, 108 when I got married, 113 after the first baby and 118 after the 2nd.

i kept 118-122 through my thirties, and when I went up to 138, the dr figured out the problem. the meds help a lot but it's for life and may have to be increased for you, as you age.

or, maybe you're pregnant again!

you can ask your doctor to do a blood test to see if the medicaiton is working ok. but diet and exercise work together.

p.s. it gets hard as we age. ya got metabolism & gravity working against you.

i do a workout video every morning and the bike or walking every night. i also eat less than you do, but you're probably hungrier than me, running after little kids.

i have coffee and yogurt in the am, a salad with protein for lunch, and a regular, small dinner. carbs only with dinner.

if i can help you, pls contact me.

good luck!

Thanks for your response :) I have actually been trying HIIT lately to see if that would make a difference but its only been a few weeks of my trying that. I just seem STUCK no matter what I try  I have tried keeping track on fitday and I will say Im no where near 2000 cal. I think I usually come in around 1100-1400 cal range. I would like to lose weight though not maintain so I thought this amount was OK? Let me know what ya think.

Thank you so much for your advice~ I definitely get to the point of feeling VERY hungry before I eat. My workouts can be erratic because my kids are all so young but I always get in 4-5 days of something!
typical is
sat~ 30-45 min jogging and walking on treadmill OR elliptical
30 minutes of legs w/weights
abs
sun~ 30 minutes 3.5 on 15 incline(treadmill)
mon~30 min walk/jog outside ( I live in SW FL)
upper body weights, abs
Tue~ lower body weights but at home so lighter weights
wed~ walk/run outside
Thursday~ off
Fri~ 30 min walk/jog outside
upperbody weights

sometimes I end up not getting to do one or two of those days~ I honestly don't work out my upper body to intensly cause Im lean up there and build muscle easy but the lower half is a big problem for me. Maybe Im not mixing things up enough?

thank you! I did not know that hypo caused edema. I do seem to be going up and down a few lbs I used to stay very steady.

We seem very similiar! I was alway 100-102 lbs till I turned 25 then went up to 107 lbs. I was down two 110-112 after my first two babies( within six months of giving birth). I even excercised thru out my third pregnancy and I did get down to 115 lb but have now gained  Its so frustating to feel like any extra time i have I am trying to work out and eat better with no results?? I seriously weighed less when I just ate whatever I wanted. It makes no sense to me. I am going to go get my blood tested for my thyroid levels next week just to rule that out.
Thanks so much for your response~ at least I know there is hope!

My own views:

Eat vegetables and plenty of em

Cut out junk and refined carbs as much as you can

Forget 'cardio' - do interval training and strength work

Walk as much as you can

Take time to relax and treat yourself to massage, saunas, sunbeds etc.- whatever floats your boat

of course there is hope there is always hope.. just curious but do you do any compound exercises or just isolation, that helped me after my 2nd son was born. i weight more now than i did before my kids but i don't care bc i'm in way better shape and have really good muscles so the weight thing is deceiving. go by how you look and feel, not by the scales.

thanks for the advice~ with three small children its hard to find "me" time but I know I need to work on that :)

Ive actually been doing more isolation although I used to do more compound~ I'll give anything a try at this point. After my second child I was working out and probably in the best shape of my life(I was 32). I tried to continue working out thru my third pregnancy and did so in moderation. I started back up within six weeks of giving birth but it's now been almost two yrs and it has just been a hard battle this time  I am eating healthier then I ever have and exercising more. I don't believe the extra weight is due to muscle because clothes that used to be loose on me are now tight! I don't like how I look right now.
Im going to take all the advice you have all given me and work hard! I'll get my thyroid tested again next week to rule that out and go from there. I so appreciate all the help and ideas from all of you!

well compounds are really good to do and don't rely on what worked before your body is different now. compounds work the stablizing muscles and help to firm up more than just one big muscle. i use both. isolation just to increase strength and size where i need it in particular, but compounds to firm up the body. i do cardio but i mix that up too, not just running etc, i do several different things depending on my mood and how much time i have. the fact that you have hypothyriodism is going to make it a challenge for you but it is very doable. so i suggest adding compounds in to your workout. pilates is good to as long as your form is good and up challenge yourself by uping the intensity when it gets easy. i do pilates as my light workout or to destress, i hear yoga is really good too. i haven't tried it yet but i plan on it in the future, after exams rideouts and emca testing.
