Hello all! I have been lurking on this site for a couple of weeks now and decided to join in. I have been fat and obese all of my life. I am an 36 year old father of an 13 and 5 year old. I am 5'11 and I weighed 348 pounds. I lost 60 lbs getting down to 288 and then I fell off the wagon. I got back on the scale on Jan 19th 2009 and I weighed 317. I started back on my low carb and walking diet that day and I am now at 293lbs. Thanks for all of you who have shared your pictures and tips-it really is inspiring motivation. Maybe I will get the courage to post some pics of myself in the near future.

Well I weighed myself on Saturday and was excited because I was down to 289. This is where is was 2 years ago November when I quit dieting. Then I weighed this morning and it said 291.0 What???!!! I did everything the same and I even walked 2 miles Sunday night after church. O well still excited, that is a total of 26lbs in 29 days. Feels good to have people starting to notice and some old clothes starting to fit alot better, plus I am sleeping better and walking 2 miles in 30 minutes without anymore shin pain. Almost feel like I could try to jog, but I am going to wait 1 more week.

Quick update--back down to 289. I have really started to drink more water YUK!! and actually trying to eat a little more, and it seemed to help. I am trying to stay at 1200 calories a day and i think I was only eating about 800 to 900, but i wasnt hungry so i thought i would help. My wife also actually complimented me this morning, that she could notice a differance in my stomach, which made my morning

Wow, 800-900 calories a day? I don't think I could ever do that. My body would start to eat itself. I mean, that would be ok because I bet I taste really good, but it would be weird.

Anyway, congrats on the loss. Aren't compliments nice? I can't WEIGHT to get some.

Frustrated

Thanks all for the replies and encouragement--I really appreciate it. Right now I am very very Frustrated. I went a whole week and did not lose a pound!! I have hit my first plateau and it seems my body is refusing to give up the 290's. I wil flirt with 288-289 and then boom 291--AGHHHH! I am not giving up though, this is excactly the point I reached two years ago and I gave up. NOT THIS TIME!!! I am going to bump up the cardio and get the dust off of my bike and kick this thing in the butt!!

The human body is weird. Just keep at it and you will see a difference. Sometimes a month will fly by and you dn't lose anything then one day BAM you lost 5 lbs out of the blue.

What is your routine, if you don't mind me asking?

Routine

protein breakfast between-7-8 am

protein lunch with ceaser salad at 12

protein dinner with vegies between 5-7

walk 2 miles in evening--usually in bed by 10 pm

try to stay around 1200 calories and drink as much water as i can gag down :puke:, i hate drinking water, i just added some crystal light flavorings to help with forcing myself to drink more. I also usually will have 1-2 diet pepsi's aday, I used to drink 4-5 regular soda's a day.

That's definitely a great start. Eventually, you're going to want to join a gym, or find a way to get some weight training involved. The more muscle you build, the higher your metabolism will go and the more calories you will burn doing absolutely nothing. Also, you may want to find your daily caloric needs. If you're eating too few calories, you body goes into starvation mode and you won't lose any weight at all. It sounds weird, but its the truth.

Yea!

Down to 287!!! lowest I have been in over 3+ years. Long way left to go, but i am excited. I feel much better and the weight is comming off slowly but surely.

At your current weight - why do you think that 1200 calories is a good idea?

Once your weight goes lower, you need to adjust your caloric intake to reflect the new weight -and if you're starting too low you don't have much wiggle room.

You shoudl eat for the body you currently have -not that of a 120lb teenage girl...

Seriously dude - start reading the stickied threads - successful weight loss is more than just 2lbs a week...

Somebody recommended that you, a 5' 11" 348 lb man, eat less than 1,200 calories a day? You didn't happen to get this advice in the back of their van, did you? I've never heard of such a thing.

There is no substitue for plain old water, I made it easier for myself by putting lemon slices, or even grapefruit to make it taste better, You should try it!

Congrats on getting back on the wagon, I'm sure you will do great!

Thank you Faith for the encouragement--some of you others ticked me off so i went and pulled out the program that i was given and.......... i can admit when i am wrong--the plan stated not to excede 1600 calories for a man and 1200 for a woman..So thank you...I suppose this is the whole purpose of a support group forum huh? :D

haha, exactly! You must be willing to take advice when it comes to your own body, sounds weird. But there are so many "opinions" out there....

Again, congrats!
