New blood enters the fold

Hey everyone,

I am new to this group but not to working out and dieting . I began a weight lifting program many years ago and blessed with genetics favorable toward gaining muscle mass and strength at 6'3'' I buffed up to a very powerful and solid 260lbs .
I have however sustained several injuries from my many years of collage football, wrestling and weight training.
It seems these problems have really taken a toll on me as I age and at 45 I was unable to walk or stand for anything other then a few minutes at a time . I become very inactive ( obviously ) for 2 yrs and began eating entire large pizzas and wings while watching the NFL ..UFC ..etc.

By the time I was able to finally start working out again I had ballooned to a insane 460lbs before I realized it :banghead:. I am currently seeing my doctor every 6 weeks and training again. I have lost 140lb of fat and gained about 40 pounds of muscle in 10 months according to my body fat % tests and need to lose at least another 100 lbs before the bone specialist will consider giving me the new hip and knee that I need badly .

I am still unable to work out at anything like 100% so I am getting a little worried about losing the rest of the weight as I am slowing down a bit lately.

I am here seeking some moral support , knowledge and fellowship for the rest of my journey down this road back to health.

Thanks for reading this

Congratulations on your weight loss so far. You are doing brilliantly.

Weight loss does slow down as we get smaller (and older come to that - I am 50)- but we can get there if we keep on perservering.

As we get smaller it becomes more important that we are eating healthily - ensuring that we are hitting our nutrient targets. I found that it was well worth me monitoring through fitday to keep an eye on sodium. The calories were right - but the sodium sometimes drifted up and kept my weight high...

Good luck with the rest of your project.

I suggest that you study up your nutrition. There is a section on this forum which I am sure will be helpful to you.

I posted this about sodium on another diet forum recently.

I suggest that you read other items in that nutrition section too.

Setting proper targets for all sorts of things like protein, calcium, fibre, healthy fats etc will all help your weight loss. In my experience this becomes ever more necessary as we get smaller.

I am sure that you are aware that you can see a breakdown of your nutrients (and calories) using a free account from

Thanks for the tips Omega - I agree and have been watching more that I am eating enough, lol!

Good on you Doomdog, for choosing life! my mum and relatives are morbidly obese - I love them dearly - but I know I have to be careful and make a change for life.

I started (this time) at 202 pounds - am currently 189 pounds and feeling much more positive than I have in years. (I'm only 5 foot 3)

To be honest I was just shutting down from everyone and everything -
so having hope is wonderful.

Life is good! Great to see you here :)

I'm going in to see my doctor this coming Monday so I have about one more week more of working out and dieting before hitting the scale again. I will update on my progress .

OK so I went to my doctor and weighted in etc. last week and I have lost another 18lbs and have also put on a couple pounds of muscle. I am actually starting to get around a bit better on my knee and feel much better.

I am continuing to eat right, lift weights, ride my exercise bike and I also just purchased a Body By Jake Tower 200 just to mix things up a bit. I plan on doing chest and shoulders a little later and then some cardio on the bike and super set cardio w/ the Tower 200 later this evening after football. So all in all doing better getting a few complements and feeling like I'm finally starting to get somewhere.

Just to add an up date here.
I have been working out 5 days a week instead of the 4 that I was doing before getting some new equipment. I'm also working out for about 20 min.s longer each work out then I was previously so I have upped my intensity a bit .
My goal is to drop over 20lbs of fat regardless of whatever muscle mass I might
gain due to now incorporating some leg lifts in my training again. My legs are noticeably bigger, stronger and harder then just about a month ago.
I'm seriously enjoying my work outs again lately so things are looking up.

Hey Doomdog

You are doing soooo well! Good on you! Sounds like you're great with the exercise too!

I have been a bit slack lately but still hanging in there, despite constant opportunities to eat rubbish food!

Hahah thanks for the support . I'm just glad the holidays are over and
all the food will not be as readily assessable everywhere we go now.

Yes, my new mission is to start biffing out, giving away and destroying the "gifts" - sadly I have on my bench - biscuits & 7 boxes of chocolates (its a real shame I can't feed chocolate to the dog!!! - wouldn't you know its poisonous for dogs!).... anyway, at least the "eat up" crowd have gone home - with their "kind" offers of everything under the sun! Whew - love the people and the good times - but its not easy to keep saying No 24/7 - bit like being under seige or something! Gotta admit - it made Christmas Day and New Year's look like a walk in the park!

Back to boot camp now! hehe. Yay! :smash:

A little short break every now and then , if not taken all that far, helps me to stay motivated and on target. Good luck getting rid of all that "stuff".

Hey I'm new too just looking for people with the same goals i guess...

Luck to everyone with their journey to a healthier body.

Doomdog, you are doing very well especially considering your injuries.

As you have been active and weight lifted in the past, it shows that you know what you are doing, also a note for people is that if you have exercised a lot and weight lifted in the past you do develop muscle memory which helps when you tackle it again. This is the case for myself, one must just be careful not to overdue it when getting back into such exercise.

Strangely enough a guys muscles (not sure about this for woman) are more matured when we enter our 30s and I have seen guys with killer bodies up to 60 years old that would put any 20 something year old to shame.
