new big help for my dad

Hey, I need some weight loss tips for my dad. He ways 350, maybe. He has major sores on his legs and the doctors say it's because of his weight. So, he can't walk long without his back or his legs hurting like crazy. Which kinda takes away from the treadmill or much use of weights. I am trying to find which diet is best for him to lose weight. Id like to get him down 50-100 pounds without much use of walking or weight lifting. I know this might sound far fetched, but his condition is serious and real. He has been trying hard to lose weight. He knocked out sweets(completely) and is eating less at dinner time. Maybe you guys can help me with any good choices of diet pills/vitamins or a good eating plan. Please help and thanks ahead of time. If it helps he is 46 years old and 6'4".

He should follow the same tips for fat loss that everyone does...eat 5-6 small meals a day with a lean protein and carb in each one, drink a lot of water, get some cardio in and some weight training.

I think you're doing him a dis-service if you don't start him out with exercise PLUS a clean diet. Exercise is also important for many other things than weight loss like blood pressure, stress relief, etc. Can he swim? That's usually good for overweight people since it's non-weight bearing. What about a stationary bike? He should lift weights as well.

I wouldn't recommend any diet pills...just a clean diet with lots of water. Cutting out sweets is a good start. :)

Hi Phantom.

In no way do I feel you are doing a dis-service to you father. Your posting for help shows your love for your father and I applaud you on that. Your father needs your help and support because his condition is serious! The symptoms that you described to me sound like PVD (peripheral vascular disease) which is strongly associated with CAD (coronary artery disease). The major symptomsof PVD are these ulcers (sores on his leg) and intermittant claudication (pain when walking).

These ulcers are very slow to heal and due to poor circulation as is the pain when he walks. The best treatment for intermittant claudication is to walk until he feels pain. Rest. Walk again until pain. Rest....Repeat. Gradual increase the number of times he repeats this walk/rest cycle. Over time his distance of walking without pain WILL increase. This walking is also good to get circulation to his legs to try and heal these ulcers.

Does your father smoke??

NEVER put him on diet pills as they will cause an unsafe increase in his heart rate.

PLEASE put start him on vitamins. Besides a multivitamin he is going to want to take omega-3's (fish oils) which are anti-inflammatory and very good for cardiovascular health. Also have him take alpha-lipoic acid/acetyl-L-cysteine both of which are good for preventing diabetic complications which are very similar to PVD complications. If you go to there are great, vitamins that are tested for the best absorption into the body.

If you have any other questions please email me!!! esplichal@yahoo.com

I wish you all the best!!!

Above advice is good BUT I would seek the help of a professional registered dietitian and his doctor. At 350 pounds this is no ordinary weight loss post. You father will need the help and guidance of professionals who know him, his medical history and his current level of health.

I applaud you for asking for help, but getting it on these boards will not be the best thing.
