Hi everyone,

Well, i came by this site, and i liked the kind of support and advice you give to each other. And may i say, you guys have a lot of knowledge under your belts. I am college aged, 5'8", 140 lbs. I know that im not considered "fat", but right before i got married last april, i was around 118. i promised myself that i wouldn't let my body go, but i guess im eating my words. I go through phases where i exercise like everyday for an hr on the treadmill (summer of '05) and not working out or watching what i eat at all (fall '05). I finally got myself into a moderate routine so that i dont set myself up for failure this Jan. I have been working out 3 days a week (tuesday, thursday, friday) for 4 weeks now for an hr on the elliptical machine. My diet hasn't been all that bad. I have actually gained 5 lbs. since i started. i was 135 and now im around 140. I am pretty sure that it is not my metabolism that has slowed down, and i dont think that my diet is the one to blame either, since i eat probably healthier things now than i did a year ago. I think it might be my birth control, but i need other people's opinions.i just had a few questions for you ya'll:
1) does birth control really make you gain weight
2) if it does, is it too hard to lose it (i heard it was a lot of water retention)
3) its been 4 weeks now, how do i kick-start my body to start losing weight?

Hi and welcome! Birth control does make some women gain weight, and others not. And for those who do gain weight, for some the weight gain stops after a couple months. For others, it continues.
Do you know how many calories you are eating? And how often are you eating? Often when people start a new diet they eat far too few calories, which is one reason they don't lose weight.

So true sarah! another thing is when you dont' calorie count, you could be eating more than you need. You should really try to stay around 1200-1500 cals/day.

I wouldnt' concentrate on if b.c. makes you gain or not, to some people, once they feel something will keep them from weight loss, they don't even try anymore. Don't worry about it, just do your best everyday. Besides, if you weren't dieting maybe you would have gained more than 5 pds??

Thanks for the great advice. when it comes to the calories i consume, every day varies, but i overall eat about 1300 plus or minus 200 calories here and there. i have a really bad habit of not eating that much, but what i do end up consuming turns out to be really bad, processed foods (like poptarts or a lot of snacking on cereals and such).

i also had another question...i heard that its best to work out before you eat anything in the morning. the only thing is that i have a class from 11 to 12 on the days i work out. so i go to school, work out for an hr, come home and take a shower and stuff, and by the time i get to eat anything its 1:30 or 2 pm. is this healthy or should i eat something before i go to school in the mornings. if i should eat something, should it be light like yogurt and a banana or something like eggs and cereal?

I did not gain weight on the pill (was on it for 8 years), but on the depo provera shot I gained 50 pounds (on it for 4 years) :(
