Im 22 years old and I am relativly skinny. I weigh about 10.5 to 11 stone and I want to to try and build up my upper body so that it is well toned. I do around 50 pushups about twice a week. I stretch first for about 5 mins, do 10 pushups, rest for 2 mins, then do 10 more etc. I try and eat alot of high protein stuff (e.g chicken and fish I dont like beef or lamb) to help my body building aswell as making myself lots of fruit juice drinks from fresh - about 3 oranges, 2 apples, 2 carrots and 2 peices of celery after workout. Unfortunalty though I am lactose intolerant so I cant eat foods that contain dairy produce, which again reflects on my skinnyness. I was woundering if there are any other kinds of exercise I can do to build up my upper muslces and look toned rather than skinny. I was thinking about going swimming to replace one session of pushups a week. Should I be eating other kinds of foods to help build my muscles? If anyone can help me I'd be eternally gratefull! Cheers

Stop doing pushups and start a proper 3day split training in your gym.

And most import of all, eat eat eat! Tons of fruit, chicken tuna cottage cheese eggs oatmeal potatoes vegetables etc!

There's a bodybuilding saying: Train like an animal, eat like a horse, sleep like a baby and you'll grow like a weed.

What exersise?

Hey there! Thanks for your reply! I just woundered whats a good overall exersise to do? I thought about using a rowing machine as its a good overall exersise to do! How long would you recommend doing it for per session for 3 times a week?

There are multiple "good exercises" called compound exercises. They are your lifting friends. They consist of Bench Press, Squat, Deadlift, Rows, Dips, Pull/Chin-ups and others.

This website will help you in learning what certain exercises are and all: ExRx Weight Training.

Start off with a 3-day Full Body workout. Eat like a madman, and even if your lactose intolerant, there are so many other forms of good proteins such as fish, chicken, beef, eggs, peanuts, and so many more. I hope your gains are swifter then Chuck Norris killing his prey! Haha.

Rowing machine = Cardio.

Like ^ he says, try to learn and master those exercises.
It's hard I know, but with proper guidance and some will power you can do it easily.

Please avoid machines like the plague unless they're your only option for a certain exercise.
I personally recommend you use Dumbbells for a couple of weeks/months instead of a Barbell to build up some initial arm strength so you can keep the barbell nice and straight without wobbling and endangering other people.

Also, ab exercises are hugely overrated especially if you want a six pack, just do the compound exercises, those will strengthen your core immensely.

One last thing, NEVER underestimate your diet, it can make or break all your gym efforts!

Thanks!

Cheers for all the support! I'm not too concerned about getting a 6 pack as such, I just want a realativly toned upper half, if that makes sense!? Strong upper body thats all, but I would like to do some swimming to build up my stamina. Shall I just stick to weights?
