Need some help

I am a high school senior who is 18 years old, and in need of some desperate help. I have been heavier all of high school, but no one could really guess that I am over weight. I look muscular in my clothing, but I'm not once the shirt comes off. I have always found alternative ways to change clothes before gym class, and before my sporting events. I have had countless lies, about not going to a pool party, or going somewhere with a hot tub, because I'm extremely embarrassed about my figure. I'm a big basketball and baseball player. My basketball season isn't going so well and i contribute that to my weight issues. Baseball season is coming up, and I'm quitting basketball tomorrow after practice, just so that I can get into shape, because I'm going to try and walk on a team whenever i attend college. So hhere's some facts:
18 years old
218 pounds- current
185 pounds- goal
I wish to achieve this goal within 2.5 months.

As of tomorrow, all I will be drinking is tons of water, some gatorade, and milk. I will also be eating smaller portions of meals, and cutting all the junk food completely out of my life.
I'm also going to start to run everyday, ride a bike 4 times a week, and lift 5 days a week.

Will all this help? or will i still be the fat kid?

also...side topic but...I've been looking through some weight loss pills, and some protein/creatine products.
do any of these work?
and what should i do first, concentrate on losing the weight?, or can i worry about losing the weight and gaining muscle at the same time?

I'm in dire need of help people. PLEASE LET ME KNOW ANYTHING THAT COULD HELP ME OUT, ALSO PUSH ME! MAKE SURE I STICK WITH THIS PLAN, AND HELP ME ACHIEVE MY GOALS.

i know I'm over weight.
I can guarantee you though that I will never be able to get down to 160 or 170, just physically impossible. Would you ever consider taking any pills? I was researching some stuff and saw that EAS has some neat products that say will make you learn and ripped. Do they work, or is everything just a big hoax?

collegegrad3,

I would not recommend that you quit basketball. This is something that you enjoy doing, right? It's a very good way to lose weight. You can still lose weight and play basketball. Just play harder. Run harder. Push yourself during the practices and during the games. Keep your goal in mind.

I would also not recommend drinking Gatorade or too much milk. Both will help gain weight. Water is the best thing you can take in- zero calories, zero fat. Drink water all day. You should probably drink 10 glasses of water per day. If you can, 15. Just don't drown yourself... Water does a great job of cleaning your body out and breaking down the fat.

Nothing wrong with drinking milk, as long as it's lowfat, and in moderation. 1-2 glasses a day is more than enough.

The best way to lose weight is to do 3 things:

1) Exercise
2) Diet (eat 6 times a day, small portions instead of 2 or 3 meals a day)
3) Drinking lots of water

With exercise, you have to be careful with that. If you do too much, your body will max out and plateau. You don't want that. Keep doing basketball... After basketball practice, try running at home for an hour. During practice, do your absolute best. Do some ab exercises, like sit ups. But keep in mind, it has to increase eventually. So don't do 100 your first time out. Do like 50 situps every day for a week, then 55 every day the following week.. Increase by 5. By 2.5 months, you should be doing maybe 95 situps.

As you can see, I'm still early in my journey, but I was in your shoes way back then, and lost 80 lbs in 4 months. It is possible. But you should set realistic expectations, so that you don't go crazy and so that your health does not get any beating. 2.5 months... I would say 15-20 pounds is safely reasonable. And yes, it is doable.

And forget about pills and drugs. They will appear to work the first month, then screw you up real good. The only pills I have ever tried and they seemed to work was Hoodia. It suppressed the hunger. But once you stop the stuff, you go hungry like you never have before. Another thing was Hydroxycut. That stuff worked, but it's very bad for your heart.

Take it from a dude that did that stuff, don't bother... You don't want to be skinny now only to become a 300+ pound dude in the future.

thanks for the info.
What's your take on protein?
and again, is it smart to lift, and try to gain muscle, as well as going on a diet and trying to lose weight?

and what creatine? I have heard of all of it, but have no clue what it does, and what the side effects are.

more help please!

A pleasure.

Protein sometimes satisfies hunger better than fats and carbohydrates, and is healthy for you. It burns away the fat and helps build muscles. But, as in everything you eat, moderation is a must.

When a person diets, they lose some muscle mass. It would not hurt to build up your muscles while dieting. Your weight may not drop as quickly as you would expect, however, your fat would be reduced. It's not the actual weight that you want to reduce, just the fatty appearance, right? If that's what you want to achieve- a muscular look and at the same time, lose the fat, go for it.

But, working out should have some rest days. 2 days out of the week is a good amount of rest. Alternate between upper body and lower body. Cardio exercises- (running, treadmill, bicycle, elliptical, etc) every day is good for you, just as long as you do not over do it. 45 minutes to an hour is a reasonable amount.

Combined with basketball, and 1 hour of exercise should do the trick. You don't want to do too much. You'll lose the weight if you do it right for sure. Good eating is half of the equation.

Creatine is a body building supplement that helps feed the muscle mass. For your purposes, that would not really be necessary. Some people swear by the stuff, though.

thanks again George,

Stay in touch I'll keep on giving you updates on myself, i hope to hear some updates from you as well.

and I got some bad news today, I weighed myself, and was completely wrong from what I thought i weighed.

I'm now at 225. Yikes, i need this to get down!

No problem same with you. I know the feeling of being alarmed. Been there, done that.

But, that should be a good push on getting started. :) Good luck!

Live long and prosper,
George

Good Luck

As the saying says "Where There's a Will, There's a Way"

I had to lose like 30 Lbs for my wedding, I was like 150Lbs and wanted to reach 120, I only had 2 months and it seemed impossible, at the end I reached 130Lbs and I was happy with myself, "you always aim above the target to reach the target", well, I joined jenny Craig and the only thing they did, because the personalized feature was nothing, the only thing they did was to split 1200 calories in 6 meals. Now I am going to start again my weight loss journey after 3m of having my baby and I plan to do the same. Working out is good but at the end if you keep eating more than you should, you will end up at the same point, just sweating the excess calories you ate.

1) So, work on a low calorie meal plan (Your Target weight x10, mine was 120 x 10 = 1200cal/day) divided in 6 meals a day
2) Daily workout, at least 30min cardio

They also gave me vitamins which made me sick so I quit rapidly, uhm... I also took Alli just for those times when for any case I ate more fat that I was supposed to (KFC attack or something like that)

I wish you all the good luck you need, just keep up your motivation and keep telling yourself how bad you want this, do it at least once every hour, it will help you to stick to your purpose, It used to work for me when I was a teenager, well, I got a little Obsessive compulsive but I always reached my goals in this way ;) hehe

Go for it Buddy!

Hello. I am in a similar situation to you. I am 6', 220 lbs. I don't have an ideal weight in mind, numbers are not important to me. I want to feel healthy and get rid of my sleep problems. I'm lost and don't know where to start as far as diet/exercise regimen are concerned, aside from cutting out soda (proving to be difficult so far). If you are interested we could track our progress and work towards our goals together. Please let me know what you think, and good luck to you.

I feel ya, Mountain Dew is killing me.
I would love to start tracking my progress with you, like what I eat each day, alogn with exercise and such. I will post my weight every friday and hopefully I will reach my goal.
Hope you do the same each day BCBC

the only problem about eating 6 small meals, is that I'm still a senior in school, and it's just too hard to eat 6 meals, when I really only have time in a day to eat about 4..

Any one have any ideas on how I can do this?

week1

Frozen entries and salads, fruits and energy bars of 120calories, we don't have time to play to be the healthy chef, no but you can manage to warm your frozen entries right? There are a whole variety of them, I got the ones that don't exceed 350cal, they go from 180 to 350 the highest, add salads to fill you up and save calories. Snack on Fruits, low cal yogurt, rice cake, veggies, come on we can do this ;)

Have a great slim week :grouphug:

I'm working out in the mornings and its feeling great. Haven't seen any improvements yet, but I will in the end.

I like your attitude here! Awesome, and keep up the good work. I also find it very hard to eat the "six small meals" that everyone seems to swear by. I find it easier to fill in my meals with protein shakes and bars. It's so easy and protein is always a plus! Also, when you do drink your milk, drink it after a workout and add a scoop of whey protein to it! Milk is awesome after a workout because it helps retain your fluids and prevent dehydration. ;)

You can work around the 6 meal thing. Check this out:

Breakfast: Eat a small breakfast. Be picky of what you eat. (6-8am)

Between classes: Eat a granola bar and a few nuts. (I'm partial to Almonds and Cashews) (9-11am)

Lunch: Eat a small lunch. Be picky of what you eat. (11am-12 noon)

Last period: Eat a granola bar and a few nuts. (2:30-3)

At home, eat a small dinner. (5-6pm)

Eat a small snack (7:30)

And don't eat anything at all after 7:30pm. Drink water every time you finish each period at the water fountain. At home, drink one cup each hour until bedtime.

It does not have to be a salad or chicken or something that has to be refrigerated. It can be nuts, raisins, dried fruit, a fruit, or a few wheat crackers with a little bit string cheese on it. (a teeny bit) You can enjoy yourself a little bit, just keep in mind what's bad for you and avoid those.

Morning workouts are great for you. It sets a mindset for the day. Physically, you won't really notice any difference until the 2nd week. But internally, you'll notice it within a few days, and it is apparent that you have already noticed that.

Congratulations, you are now "in it" real good.
