Need some help. I'm a noob. Workout!

Hi there!
I've been reading around the web on exercise in general and am somewhat confused. I've read a few help threads on this forum too but still feel the need to post so please bear with me ;)

I'd like to work on my upper body. My goal would be to get stronger and while I would like a more toned upper body I don't want to look like a complete beefcake..

Gear wise I have a chin up bar and these 2 poles that stick out of a wall, I can do tricep exercises with those ..

The thing is, HOW do I exercise exactly?

from what I've read I'd need to do a little reps as possible but with high resistance .. which is fine and dandy but what does that imply?
4x4 chinups? 3x5? 5x3?

As it stands i can do 6 chinups comfortably, 7 if pushed. I've also noticed that clap pushups are recommended but won't those do your back in?

I'd really like to avoid the gym and workout at home. I'm not a fan of wildly elaborate machines and feel like I'm cheating with the chinup bar as is.

If you don't train your whole body, you could end up with serious consequences down the line.

oh, such as?
I play tennis regularly, shouldnt that "cover" my legs and general aerobic exercise?
And considering the alternative, doing something is surely better than nothing, right?

tennis is NO WAY a resistence workout for the legs, so no, it doesn't cover anything except cardio.

you'll end up with a large upper body, stick legs, and a weak lower back, which you'll then likely injure, which might prevent you from ever playing tennis again.
you either train everything, or you train nothing. half assing it is a waste of time and potentially dangerous.

while i do appreciate your concern for my well being, i'm still clueless as to what exercises to do for what duration. A help thread mentioned elsewhere on this site mentioned hindu squats as a viable exercise.
