Hi,
Im 15 years old, 5 ft 10 and 196 lbs! (14 stone)

I lost half a stone recently, but its been 2 weeks and i havnt lost any more weight. I only eat about 900-1300 calories a day. I go on my bike almost daily doing 2-8 miles. I have also started weight lifting.
My Metabolism is pretty low right now because in the past i never did any exercise, but its best if i do something about it now before its too late.

So how many calories should i have a day? I dont have a clue about any of this so i need as much info as possible, its getting really frustrating though because i cant lose any.

Please reply ASAP.

Hey! Welcome to the forum!

Ok, your average calorie intake should be around 1200. I think that the most important thing you said in your post is that you are weight training. That means that your body is turning fat into muscle---and that's probably the reason why you haven't seen any change in your weight. Your body is making itself stronger (yeah!) so rest assured...soon you will see your weight change. You're doing all the right things, sometimes it just takes a little bit longer than our patience wants it too.

I have only just started weight training though, like i have hardly done any.
So if i have 1200 a day how many pounds will i lose a week? Someone said i should have 1500 a week. Ive hit a plateau though now, i must be doing something wrong. Im lost without you and other forum members :S

If you have started weight training, you may need more calories.:)

RESULTS - GUIDELINE ONLY
Maintenance: 2657 Calories/day
Fat Loss: 2125 Calories/day
Extreme Fat Loss: 1594 Calories/day

This is based on you exercising 3 times a week. That's how many calories you need. Remember, you're still growing too.

It would be so nice if our bodies obeyed the mathematics of calories. Unfortunately, our bodies have their own way of doing things and the math doesn't always work. Keep doing what your doing, the results will come. :)

Hi EasyE,
you're doing fine mark my words if you stick to your diet and exercise that excess weight WILL come off, the same thing always happens to me I'll go extra hard at the gym and follow my diet vigilantly and nothing happens, but then a week or so later I lose a couple of kilos (5 pounds), also if it's around that time of the month your weight can really yo yo, I usually put on a couple of pounds around that time so maybe you've actually already lost a few pounds I guess you'll just have to weight and see... keep up the good work :)
Also remember the more muscle you have the higher your resting metabolism will be!

Ok cool. I had 3 chocolate chip cookies today because i got pissed off with what was happening. I also had some chocolate yesterday. I know its ok though now. So should i have 1500 calories a day?

Also, isnt exercise a bad thing to do while dieting? It will mess up how many calories your body needs so you wont know.

WOW, that's an old misconception... :D

Exercise is a good thing to do while dieting, as it gives your body a reason to burn off fat... In order to lose weight, your body has to use more calories than it consumes.. exercise helps that along.. and strength building, helps with your metabolism.

You want to make sure that you do regularly eat though... you can't run a car without gas, youc an't run your body without fuel..

So why wouldnt it work if you had like a carrot every hour and did a lot of exercise. You wouldnt get hungry so your body cant do that starvation thing, so would you lose loads of weight?

What's up Doc?

If you only ate a carrot every hour and did alot of exercise you probably would lose loads of weight. Not only is that idea very unhealthy, it is a really unrealistic view on how to become healthier and maintain weight loss on the long term. I think a diet of a carrot every hour would probably get pretty darn sickening and hard to cope with after the first 4 or 5 hours or so. Then it would be back to the drawing board. Know what I mean Doc? (Bugs Bunny)

Well then help me. The scales say im like 14 stone 3 pounds now. I havnt even eaten much. I would rather unhealthily lose the weight really quickly than take a year to lose 1 annoying stone which wont fuckin go however hard i try.

How tall are you -- 14stone + 3 is 101 pounds... how much weight do you want to lose?

Loosing weight unhealthily doesn't keep it off and could effect your health long term.

14 stone is 196 pounds.
I want to be 12 and a half stone. Im 5 foot 10. Im not even very muscley because i never did much exercise before. I was about 13 stone 9, now im about 14 and a half stone over a period of 4 days. In which time i didnt eat much, i cheated yesterday and the day before because no one is helping me and i i wasnt losing any weight.

losing weight unhealthily doest keep it off... plus it could effect your health long term... you've got a lot of life ahead of you.. you want it to be healthy

There is no reason to freak out here. I understand where you are coming from believe me. I have been overweight all of my life and I understand what it feels like to be bigger than alot of the kids at school, etc. It won't take you a year to lose one stone, not if you are really trying. A safe amount of weight to lose and proven to keep off is approximately 2 lb.s per week. I know that this is true because I spent a year losing 4 stone and I am now 14 stone as well. I have kept the weight off for a year and have now desided to lose the additional weight. I am not sure what everybody else does, I know there is an aweful lot of calorie counting and things on here that you might not be interested in doing. So I will just tell you what I do and hopefully it will work for you too. It's the only help I can offer. I took really small steps toward making my eating heathier. I stopped eating things like chips, crisps, biscuits, etc... When I got a sandwich from the cafe I would get it not buttered. I started having one sugar in my coffee instead of 2. You need to eat, when you say you don't eat much, that doesn't really matter. You can eat a decent amount of food, just try to make good selections. Eat more fruit and veg. and the most important thing is to exercise. It really will make all the difference. The best thing that I have found so far is walking. Just walk somewhere that takes about 20 minutes to half an hour to get to then walk back or what I did at first because I didn't really like going out walking, I just pumped up something like the Black Eyed Peas and danced my arse off for like 30 minutes at a time. Try to do something like that everyday. I'm not sure what else to say. That's how I have done it so far. Don't get too discouraged, and don't do anything desperate or unhealthy. Just make a plan and try to stick with it. Don't beat yourself up when you slip up, just keep going! It will work out if you do!:D

Then why do the scales say i have gained all that weight in 4 days? Its stupid im nearly back to my original weight but i dont look how i did. Maybe the scales are broken. Also, you didnt say how many calories i should have. What if i only have 500 a day but space the food out so i dont get hungry. Would that work? If not, how do i stick to a certain calorie ammount if i exercise every day and vary the workout, how will i know how many calories to add/take away to match what i do in a day. Im not bothered about junk food i can easily get rid of all that, and i dont mind healthy food either. Will power isnt an issue with me its just that i dont know how much to eat to not lose it unhealthily.

As I said I don't bother counting calories. I think that for me it is an unrealistic thing for me to do for the rest of my life. There are a number of threads on this website that discuss the appropriate calories that you should have. If you have between 1200-1500 a day and exercise at least 30 minutes than you will lose weight. It doesn't matter if you space out the amount of food you eat, if you are not consuming enough calories per day than your body will hold on to the fat hince "starvation" mode. There is alot of factors and varibles to all of this. Don't dwell too much on what the scales say. Even water retention can make your weight shift up to 5 lbs in one day. When I am very close to my period my weight always shoots up 2-4lbs because you get water retention with your period. Drinking more water will help you to not get water retention. So drink at least 4 or 5 pints of water a day. Also if you are not used to exercising and then start to build some muscle that can make your weight stick because muscle ways more than fat so you may be building muscle but shedding fat. If you say your body feels the same than it is ok. Just continue doing what you know is the right thing to do and the weight will come off. You need to be a bit more patient or else you are going to do your own head in and end up worse off in the long run!
p.s. You don't have to edit your calories when you work out. If you are weight training or doing quite a bit of exercise than it would be a good idea to have 1500 calories per day, because with all of the exercise you will burn off a few hundred. I would say just try to eat healthy and exercise!

Ok so would i lose 2 pounds a week if i did this rough plan:

Breakfast: A slice of toast with a bit of butter OR 2 wheatabix with a topping of sugar and milk

Break: A Frosties cereal bar (108 cals)

Lunch: Same as break

At 3:30pm i do 6-8 miles on my bicycle, then afterwards do some sit-ups and about 20 minutes on the weights.

Tea (at around 4:30pm): A small pasta and cheese sauce meal.

Also, doesnt fibre boost the diet, or is it carbohydrates or something. I dont even know what fibre and carb is, can you explain? Along with anything else like that. (Iron, etc)

And can you tell me if that plan is good or should i change some of the food on it for more vitamin E or B or whatever.

Thanks.
