Hi everyone,

This is my first post here, I have sufferred obesity for the whole life. Now, I deciede to do the Gastric Balloon surgery. However, My BMI is 23, I found that most of the hospital just receive the patient of BMI 27. I really want to do the surgery, do you guys know where can I go for!!!!!! I am in Michigan State, wanna go some place nearly. Did anyone who are under BMI27 had done the Surgery???

Many Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Gastric Balloons have not been approved in the US. They are under clinical trial by Allergan - for which you need a BMI of 30+. You would need to go to Canada or South America or Europe or Australia to have it done. Otherwise you will have to wait a year or two for the clinical trial to complete and for FDA to approve.

At a BMI of 23, you are nowhere near obese. In fact, according to the charts, you're not even overweight. A "normal" BMI is 18.5-24.9

There is no way you're going to qualify for surgery at that BMI ... and nor should you. I would suggest that you might have some body image issues and should speak to a doctor about that.

Surgery is not the answer for you.

You need to have a BMI of over 27 in Sydney Australia to have the procedure done, 23 is not considered anywhere near obese here. Good luck with whatever you choose.
