Need Courage

I'm one of those people who has always had problems with her weight, and it doesn't help that I have very large women in my family, it seems the older they get the more weight they put on. I lost about 45 lbs on the weight watchers diet about 7 years ago but gained it all back within 4 months of not being ale to attend the meetings.I have gained about 25lbs more than I did when I started weight watchers. I would like to eventually weigh about 110-120lbs. Right now though I am just concentrating on trying to eat healthier and trying to find the courage to go back to the gym.The one thing I can't let myself do is concentrate soley on how much weight I lose. I just end up getting discouraged that way. Instead I choose to keep track of how many inches I lose. Since I'm a diabetic my doctor actually has me on a 1000 calorie diet...does that sound about right?

ambear,

Welcome to the forums...there's lots of good information here.

While I'm not an expert by any means, 1000 cals/day seems low...even for a diabetic. But hey, that's why I'm posting on a weight loss forum and not seeing patients this afternoon! :)

If you're not comfortable going back to the gym yet, go for a walk in the park. Take the stairs instead of the elevator. Go walking at the mall. Don't circle the parking lot for 30 minutes looking for a spot up by the door...go ahead and park waaaaaay out there. These little things can add up.

And finally, don't beat yourself up about yesterday, or last week...or last year. They're gone...can't do anything about them. You've got today. Just make today count.

Welcome Amber :)

Being diabetic is tough. If your doctor has you on a 1000 calorie/day diet, are there some serious extenuating circumstances that perhaps you haven't shared, because that is incredibly low and I doubt that is sustainable for any length of time. I mean unless your doctor has extreme concerns about your health/weight/diabetes, your caloric intake depends on height, weight, age, and level of activity. There are calculators all over the web but a simple way to start is take your weight and add a zero behind it. I'm 163, so 1630 is my healthy place to hover for weight loss.

I agree with Fit. Why put undue pressure on yourself to muster a bunch of courage, when you can walk around the block or do stairs until you're more comfortable. By the same token, when I go to the gym, I feel proud of my sisters who are overweight and going to the gym. No one judges you, in fact I find most people are more than happy to see people care about themselves.

It sounds like you are really on the right path since you are wanting to concentrate on eating healthy and exercise, as opposed to weight. Good for you. And that's great you have Weight Watchers experience behind you. Good luck and see you on the boards :)

1000 is lower than the normal minimum but there are a few different reasons to have a calorie limit like this but only under supervision from a professional. you need to keep an eye on your energy levels as working out with such low calories is a LOT harder, make sure you have eated around an hour before atempting to train at the gym and and eat some carbs within about 20 minutes of finishing a training session, this will realy help your energy levels on a low cal diet and still get your exercise in. I am also on a 1000 cal limit from my nutritionist for a short period of time.

Thank You

I actually just talked to a friend of mine who also wants to lose about the same amount of weight as I do. We are going to start going to the gym 4-5 times a week together. I'm not really sure why my doctor put me on a 1000 calorie a day diet. I thought it was kind of low so I think I'm going to have a talk with her at my next appointment. I've been eating 1000 calories and have been doing so for about 2 months. I would of thought I would of lost a pound or two atleast but maybe I'm just starving my body.

Not knowing your stats, I can't say for sure but if you have done 1000 a day..I find it difficult to believe you didn't lose any weight. Is there a part of the story we don't know?
