Hi All,

My name is Venny and m on my journey to loose weight. I am 5.5" tall and weighs 149 pounds (came down from 156 pounds). I am targetting at loosing atleast 20 pounds by next 5 months.

I have been gymming for last 3 months and am following extensive workout of 2 hrs for 4 days a week. My workout included lots of activities that i do daily.

However inspite of doing evrything I cud do, I am not able to c the results I expected by now. I just lost 7 pounds so far which is actually not very noticeable.

My belly fat has not reduced by even quater of an inch. I am realllly realllly struggling very hard to get rid of this. This is a hereditary factor coz my mother also possess lots of belly fat.

My major purpose to be here is to gather expert advice and not fall into the trap of expensive weight loss programs that do no good. I want to learn by others experince.

Secondly, I would highly appreciate if somebody like me is also involved in achieving the same targets as I do. This would help both(more) of us to track our activities and our diet that will ultimately help us in achieving the goal.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks
Venny

Hi Venny,

20 pounds over the next 5 months is very reasonable. I'm hoping for the same ...about 1 lb per week. Im also having a hard time. I have a stressful job and find I eat more there. I do well when I am at home tho.
I also have been going to the gym 3 times a week. Its more for strength but I am sure it helps a bit.

Im not an expert, but if you ever need an ear, i'm hear. I like chattin bout this stuff...keeps me interested.

Take care

Welcome to the forum.

You seem to be doing a lot of exercise, which is good, but you don't mention your diet. I think you may have discovered what a lot of people do. You can't lose much weight just by exercising. You also need to get control of your eating. It is just too easy to eat an extra 500 calories and cancel out a hard session in the gym.

Hi flumes/Harold,

My diet is really not encouraging :( m not able to givd up the cookies that i have wid tea and pizza smtimes :(
i know its making my whole effort in the gym a waste .

To be frank , m trying to avoid but its really tempting me again nd again. I m slowly trying to switch to the green diet more and avoid sugar.

And my belly fat is really discouraging me , i really want to get rid of it cmpletely. Please tell me how do i do that?

I am exercising really well , 4 days a week, 45 min cardio daily, 1 hr aerobic class and weight training and crunches ..

But all of them has not shown me the results that i was expecting by now.

Please guide me !

Hi, Venny

There is no easy answer, of course, but what helps me is counting calories. When I say counting calories, I also mean keeping track of things like grams of carbohydrate, fiber, and other important nutrients. I use my own Excel spreadsheet for this, but there are a lot of tools available to make it easier. You could download the free diet software or use an online journal like or . Good luck.

Hi harold,

I m counting calores daily on a tool on ipod call loose it, but inspite of staying under calories daily m not getting results at all, i just lost 7 pounds till now which is not a good number at all , because acc to the exrcise m doing , it shud have been more than 10 pounds now , but its not.

Can u please guide y is it so?

There could be several reasons. For one thing, the calculations of basal metabolic rate only give you a number that is typical for an average person. Some people have metabolism that is higher or lower than average. Another reason is, you could be underestimating your calories eaten. If you are not accurately measuring your food, or if you are eating any food without recording it, your calculations could be off. This is a very common mistake.

If you have lost 7 pounds, but think you should have lost 10, you are not that far off. You could have just put on 3 pounds of water weight. That does vary. Don't expect the weight to come off in a linear fashion. It will fluctuate up and down. There will be plateaus. How long have you been on your diet?

m not able to givd up the cookies that i have wid tea and pizza smtimes
That's the answer.

"I'm not able to" ... as long as you say you're not able to, then you won't.

Either you'll choose the cookies and pizza or you'll choose being healthy. Until you make the decision, all the advice we give you will be meaningless.

Thank you so much guys, i didnt had any cookies fr past one week , and skipping lunch too,, heres my diet;

Morning cornflakes with milk and almonds
lunch : one apple
dinner : varies , like pasta or rice or vegetables .

Thats all i eat in one day ,,

Harold, i have been gymming fr 3 mnths but on diet never. I do took care of calories but not that much, coz in past i had lost alot of weight even when i didnt care fr my food ,

anyways please share some tips on loosing belly fat

You can't spot lose fat. You just lose fat all over your body ... and genetics determines when and where it comes off.

Hi Venny,

Your diet plan doesnt look appealing (to me anyways)....at least for the long term. If you are working out as often as you say you do, I think you need to balance out some protein, carbs, and healthy fats in your meals .

And you should count calories. It keeps you conscious of what you are eating and you can plan your meals out better.
And water. Lots and lots.

I've been at it for a month now and eat 6 times a day.
A day might look like this or similar
Breakfast - cooked steel cut oatmeal with some blueberries milk and a little brown sugar
Snack - protein ie tuna or lean meat or protein shake if I have to
Lunch - Salad with chicken, or couple eggs.
Snack - More protein like beef jerky
Dinner - Sweet potato, brown rice, a lean meat.
Snack - Cottage cheese or almonds or low fat yogurt or protein shake.

I'm not saying this plan is right for you....but its just an example to show how I balanced meals out thruout the day. (And its far from perfect, but
I am getting it dialed in.)

I drink about 40 - 60 oz of water a day. Still trying to get it up to 80-100 oz.

I only lost 4 pounds in four weeks but thats all I wanted to lose.

I think you mean well by eating as little as you do. If you use the same determination to balance your meals out better and count calories, I know you will achieve your goals and have an easier time maintaining those milestones.

Good luck

Hi Kara/Flumes,

Thanks for the reply..

Kara: Please let me know the mystery behind fat burning.. is slow and steady cardio for elongated time like 45 daily is helpful in burning execcise or it resistance training with different means and measures? i m really confused in both of them. one article i read suggest cardio and other condems this approach.. Please enlighten me.

Flumes: ur diet is far better than mine and mine problem is am a vegeterian. so i donot have many options as u do.. i dont eat fish either. i would wholly depend upn eating raw vegetables and fibre rich food. I would change my diet in coming days and eat more fuits and raw vegetables i guess.. with dairy products too.. that shud work.

thanks

There is no mystery. :) Don't overthink it.

Fat burning occurs when you consume fewer calories than you burn. Period. Whether you burn those calories by doing cardio or lifting weights or whatever ... doesn't matter. The exercise itself doesn't burn the calories - the calorie deficit does.

Now .. that's not to say that the type of exercise doesn't matter.

Cardio burns more calories. It builds stamina. It builds cardo-vascular health.
Weight lifting strengthens and builds muscle. Weight lifting also burns calories, but fewer calories than cardio. What it does do is help skew the weight loss towards fat. When you're in a calorie deficit, weight lifting helps maintain muscle and push the calorie loss towards fat burn.

Ideally when you're losing weight, what you want to do is lift weights or do some form of strength training (weights, bodyweight, etc.) to maintain muscle. 2x - 3x a week is good. Then you want to add in cardio around that, maybe another 2x-3x per week, in order to increase calorie burn and build cardio health.

But again it's NOT the exercise itself that burns fat. It's the calorie deficit.

Your diet needs a lot of work, IMO. Just because you're veggie doesn't mean you can't eat healthily. You're not eating nearly enough calories based on your description, and you're not getting any protein or really much in the way of veggies. Cereal, pasta, and a single apple for lunch is not healthy. I can put together a very nutritious, filling, healthy plan for a vegetarian easily. It's not that hard.

Nope. :)

Part of losing weight and MAINTAINING that weight loss is learning how to eat. You can't learn how to eat if someone else puts together a plan for you.

What you need to do is begin logging your food (as I've suggested many times before) and learning what you're eating. Learn how many calories, learn the nutritional values, learn what foods are better for you and what you need to consume in limited quantities (or not at all).

You won't learn if someone hands you a list.

So start with this. Aim for 100g of protein per day. Aim for 5 servings of fruits and veggies per day. Aim for about 1400 calories per day. Within those guidelines ... figure it out! :)

Dang....I knew it after I posted. I have no idea how to go about eating healthy while being a vegetarian. I do know you are not the only vegetarian and most I have met are really healthy (at least appear to be very health conscious), so I know theres a way to do it.

Like Kara said....you have to learn to do it. You have to be mindful of everything you eat.

If you can control your eating to what you have described with the cereal and apple etc you mentioned previously....I believe wholeheartedly that with the right knowledge of eating healthy, you will achieve those goals you have set!

Good luck!

ok guys.. Kara and Flumes.. Lemme do some research and i ll come up with a plan to share soon :)

thanks for showing the path.. now I know where m heading towards .. :)

Venny, you can easily find a meal plan by doing an iternet search for meal plan and the number of calories you want to eat.

Unlike Kara, I'm not worried that you will not learn to plan meals for yourself. You will soon get tired of eating the same things all the time, and you will figure out what to substitute.

Hi Venny,

Your on the right step at least your motivated to make a change. What comes next is a life style change. The biggest way to lose weight and keep it off is to eat healthy. Remember diets don't work, there is no such thing. To start off just keep it simple if you think something is bad it probably is. Try to avoid the bigs things first.

- Stop drinking all soda. Just drink water if you can.
- Avoid all take out.
- Avoid all TV Dinners.

easier said then done for some but this just gets you started with very simple direction. The key to weight loss and keeping it off is to eat 5 healthy meals a day. This naturally builds your metabolism and let me tell you from personal experience when you build it boy does it work.

Now for the exercise. I never recommend gyms for people trying to lose a decent amount of weight and just starting out, unless your getting a dedicated personal trainer. There are many reasons why but bottom line it almost always results in failure. The best thing to do is start a home program. Begin with light aerobics and very low intensity training. The aerobics when done properly will begin burning fat immediately. These programs are specifically designed for it. They raise your heart rate and put you out of breath. So while your panting and out of oxygen just think its that deprivation of air thats now burning the calories and fat right off you. It also takes about 20 minutes of cardio before you even start burning fat. So spending 10-20 minutes on a treadmill or elliptical at the gym is just a waste of money. These programs run for 30 - 60 minutes.

So for you the biggest thing is try to eat healthy, drink a lot of water and start doing low intensity cardio work outs.

There are more resources I could help you out with if your interested.
