Need Advice

My husband, 25, was 300 lbs. 1 1/2 years ago (he's 6'2"). He went on Atkins and did 60 minutes of cardio on the elliptical and crosstraining machines almost everyday. He was not doing any weight training. Now he is down to 235 lbs, and looks great!

What are the cons of only doing cardio for that long, with no weight training? He says he wants to lose 10 more pounds before he starts weight training, but I tell him he will look better and burn more fat if he does 30 min of cardio and 30 min of weight training. Is this correct?

What would you suggest is the best regimen?

I am 22, 5'2" and 175 lbs. 3 weeks ago I started out at a weight of 183 lbs. I've been trying to cut carbs (I'm not doing Atkins) and going to the gym 3-5x a week. I do 30 min of cardio, and 30-40 min weight training. Arms one day, abs & back the next, then legs. I've noticed a big improvement in the way that I look, and the way that my clothes are fitting, but the scale hasn't moved much.

Thanks for your help.

throw out the scale ... it's a worthless tool if you are weight training. As for your husband, he is better off continuing with what he is doing than replacing some time with weight training. I would suggest adding 15 minutes or so on top of the 60 minutes of running for weight training, if anything. It is true that muscle burns fat the most efficiently, but for your husbands goals of losing weight, it will only confuse the scale.
