Jewell,
You seem to be doing a good job with your calorie intake...1500-1600 daily is probably right about where you should be for your height and weight. And, eating healthy food is the key. Don't be afraid to eat GOOD FOOD...your body will respond to it and you will look and feel so much better!
Keep up the good work!

Hey Jewell,

As already mentioned by everyone in here, you are as cute as a button! You have a really great foundation to work with and will make leaps and bounds in body composition with the right tools.

You are definitely on the right track, though I have a few suggestions to add in respect to your nutrition.

First and foremost, be done with skipping breakfast! We all know its the most important meal of the day and it jump starts your metabolism (which ultimately will help you burn fat) at a time when it's lowest. Skipping breakfast moves you backwards in your goals - it causes your body to go into starvation mode which leads to fat storage.

You also need to start incorporating some protein into every meal and snack. Eggs or cottage cheese with breakfast, some lean meats (ideally poultry and fish) at lunch and dinner.

Fiber is also important for keeping the body regulated - so become BFF'S with veggies and fruit :)

You should be eating 5-6 small meals per day as well. Especially if you are exercising. Space them out about 3-4 hrs apart.

With exercise - cut back on the cardio (2 times per week, for about 20 minutes) and increase the resistance training. Cardio has no long term effects on your metabolism and what we want with exercise (in terms of fat loss) is to produce the greatest metabolic disturbance possible, and that's done through movements that stress the muscle.

Hi Jewell,

Thanks for the welcome post! To answer your questions ..

Training your abs are not going to get you a nice flat tummy - nice flat abs are made in the kitchen. Tightening and toning the body is a direct result of fat loss - which is two fold. It involves a clean diet and good training.

Core training helps strengthen and stabilize core muscles. It will not help you reduce the size of your waist. No exercise or gadget will do that for you.

That doesn't mean you shouldn't do core exercises though! You definitely want to incorporate them as a part of your overall training routine.

It's not easy to just prescribe exercises to a stranger. There are a lot of elements involved in proper exercise prescription, involving muscle imbalances, core stability & strength and skill set. With that said, these are some fairly basic exercises. You can perform them in a circuit (back to back) and then rest 30-45 seconds before returning to the beginning of the circuit. Do the circuit 2-3 times. And it can be done 2 times per week to start.

a. V-Ups (upper abs) x15
b. Leg Raises (lower abs) x15 - tuck hands under your glutes if you feel this exercise puts too much strain on your lower back.
c. Bicycles (obliques) x15 (left to right counts as 1 rep)
d. Supermans (lower back) x15
f. Vacuums (as long as possible) - this is a fabulous exercise. When searching the web, make sure you enter in "ab exercises vacuums"

rest 30-45 seconds. repeat 2-3 times.

I know that spark people (I saw that you use them) have some exercise demonstration pictures and you will probably find some of them there. For the others, just search on the web and you'll get some exercise demonstrations. I'm not sure how kosher it is to post links to other websites for exercise demonstrations, as I see this site has a link to another fitness site for that. You can always look in that section of the forum as well I assume!

ok so today for breakfast i had a slim fast shake for lunch i had a grilled chicken salad for dinner i had mushrooms and a salad yeas i did have some ice cream at the park with my boys oopssss but how could i say no to them lol...

so when you say the kitchen is where u get flat abs does that mean eating lots of veggies and fruit what should i stay away from if u dpnt mind me asking

1. Eat 5-6 meals per day, spaced out every 3 hours. Breakfast to be had within the first hour of waking.

2. Load up on the veggies - especially dark green ones. Spinach, broccoli, bok choy, chard, green beans. Lots of fiber which helps keep the body regulated.

3. Plan your meals ahead of time.

4. Drink at least 10 glasses of water daily (or about 3-4 500mL bottles of water per day).

5. All pastas, rices, breads have to be whole wheat/brown.

6. Good fats are essential and you can get them from eggs, avocados, olives and olive oil (on salads/veggies), natural peanut butter, unsalted nuts (almonds, sesame seeds) flaxseed oil and fish. Small portions though, because they add up in calories.

7. Fruits are great but try to keep them to the beginning portion of the day.

8. Most importantly - eat close to the source. Swap processed foods (that includes slim fast) for natural foods. Slow cooking oatmeal instead of cereals, real fruits instead of juices, home made shakes instead of slim fast, nut mixtures instead of granola bars.

Don't beat yourself up over having a treat. That's life. Enjoy it and just continue on with your day getting back on track.

Hope that helps :)

god I know all about vacations and eating.
my absolute worst (and best) is hotel bacon. it's sooooo delicious and crispy and there's endless amounts to eat to your heart's (and stomach's) content.
it's so hard not to overeat on holiday because you're relaxing and don't want to have to worry about being cautious with food. especially when you go some place where you want to try all the different cuisine. i went to Bali at the beginning of the year and it was a culinary delight and when I came home I was 11 pounds heavier. ouch!

So sorry you are not feeling well! Summer colds are the worst! Be sure to drink lots and lots of fluids...it will help somewhat. Take care of yourself, and if you don't get better soon, be sure to see your doctor. You could have a sinus infection.
